| 1 | Effect of suction change on water content and total volume of an expansive clay显示文摘A laboratory study was carried out on both natural and compacted specimens to investigate the complex soil-water interaction in an unsaturated expansive clay. The laboratory study includes the measurement of soil-water characteristic curves, 1D free swelling tests, measurement of swelling pressure and shrinkage tests. The test results revealed that the air-entry value of the natural specimen was quite low due to cracks and fissures present. The hydraulic hysteresis of the natural specimen was relatively insignificant as compared with the compacted specimen. Within a suction range 0 to 500 kPa, a bilinear relationship between free swelling strain (or swelling pressure) and initial soil suction was observed for both the natural and compacted specimens. As a result of over-consolidation and secondary structures such as cementation and cracks, the natural specimens exhibited significant lower swelling (or swelling pressure) than the compacted specimen. | 2 | Phase Ⅰ/Ⅱ randomized controlled trial of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy for chronic stroke显示文摘AIM To examine the safety and efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell(MSC) therapy for intracerebral haemorrhage with neurological dysfunctions for a year.METHODS MSC were ex vivo expanded from 29 mL(17-42 mL) autologous bone marrow. Patients were randomized to have two intravenous injections of autologous MSC or placebos in four weeks apart. Neurological functions and clinical outcomes were monitored before treatment and at 12^(th), 16^(th), 24^(th), 36^(th) and 60^(th) week upon completion of^(th)e treatment. RESULTS A mean of 4.57 × 10~7(range: 1.43 × 10~7-8.40 × 10~7) MSC per infusion was administered accounting to 8.54 × 10~5(2.65 × 10~5-1.45 × 10~6) per kilogram body weight in two occasions. There was neither adverse event at time of administration nor sign of de novo tumour development among patients after monitoring for a year post MSC therapy. Neuro-restoration and clinical improvement in terms of modified Barthel index, functional independence measure and extended Glasgow Outcome Scale were evident among patients having MSC therapy compared to patients receiving placebos. | 3 | Anti-hypercholesterolemic effect of kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L.)seed on high-fat diet Sprague dawley rats显示文摘Objective:To determine? the anlihypercholesterolemic effects of kenaf seed samples and compare with the commercial hypocholesterolemic drug on serum lipids profiles and malondialdehyde(MDA) level in the rat.Methods:Kenaf seed oil(KSO),microencapsulated kenaf seed oil(MKSO),kenaf seed extract(KSE) and defatted kenaf seed meal(DKSM) were prepared and phytocHemicals screening on these samples were done prior in viro study.Phenolic compounds in KSF.were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography.There were 40(divided in eight diet groups of 5) male Sprague dawley rats adapted lo normal standard diet or hypercholesterolemic diet(HD) with or without the treatment of these kenaf samples for 32 days.Results:All the kenaf samples exhibited to contain most of the major phytocliemicals.KSE possessed gallic acid,tannic acid,catechin.benzaldehyde.benzoic acid,syringic acid,sinapic acid,ferulic acid,naringin acid,and protocatechuic acid.The significant higher(P<0.05) serum total cholesterol,low density lipoprotein cholesterol and MDA levels in HD group without treatment than the normal control group suggested the hypercholesterolemia was induced by the Incorporation of cholesterol into diet.KSE exhibited higher cholesterol-lowering properties due to the significant lower(P<0.05)in serum triglycerides,total cholesterol and MDA levels.KSF showed the highest efficiency of cholesterol-lowering activity,followed by KSO.MKSO and DKSM.Conclusions:DKSM.MKSO.KSO and KSE appeared lo have comparable anti-hypercholesterolemic effect with the commercial hypocholesterolemic drug.Hence,kenaf seed could be used as an alternative natural source lo replace the synthetic hypocholosterolemic drugs. | Ng Shy Kai Tee Ai Nee Elaine Lai Chia Ling Tan Chin Ping Long Kamariah Nyam Kar Lin | 2015 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2015，8，1： | 2 |

| 15 | Stereotactic radiotherapy and the potential role of magnetic resonance-guided adaptive techniques for pancreatic cancer显示文摘BACKGROUND Pancreatic cancer is a malignancy with one of the poorest prognoses amongst all cancers.Patients with unresectable tumours either receive palliative care or undergo various chemoradiotherapy regimens.Conventional techniques are often associated with acute gastrointestinal toxicities,as adjacent critical structures such as the duodenum ultimately limits delivered doses.Stereotactic body radiotherapy(SBRT)is an advanced radiation technique that delivers highly ablative radiation split into several fractions,with a steep dose fall-off outside target volumes.AIM To discuss the latest data on SBRT and whether there is a role for magnetic resonance-guided techniques in multimodal management of locally advanced,unresectable pancreatic cancer.METHODS We conducted a search on multiple large databases to collate the latest records on radiotherapy techniques used to treat pancreatic cancer.Out of 1229 total records retrieved from our search,36 studies were included in this review.RESULTS Studies indicate that SBRT is associated with improved clinical efficacy and toxicity profiles compared to conventional radiotherapy techniques.Further dose escalation to the tumour with SBRT is limited by the poor soft-tissue visualisation of computed tomography imaging during radiation planning and treatment delivery.Magnetic resonance-guided techniques have been introduced to improve imaging quality,enabling treatment plan adaptation and re-optimisation before delivering each fraction.CONCLUSION Therefore,SBRT may lead to improved survival outcomes and safer toxicity profiles compared to conventional techniques,and the addition of magnetic resonance-guided techniques potentially allows dose escalation and conversion of unresectable tumours to operable cases. | Tai Ermongkonchai Richard Khor Vijayaragavan Muralidharan Niall Tebbutt Kelvin Lim Numan Kutaiba Sweet Ping Ng | 2022 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2022，28，7： | 1 |
