Effective mass and Fermi surface complexity factor from ab initio band structure calculations显示文摘The effective mass is a convenient descriptor of the electronic band structure used to characterize the density of states and electron transport based on a free electron model. While effective mass is an excellent first-order descriptor in real systems, the exact value can have several definitions, each of which describe a different aspect of electron transport. Here we use Boltzmann transport calculations applied to ab initio band structures to extract a density-of-states effective mass from the Seebeck Coefficient and an inertial mass from the electrical conductivity to characterize the band structure irrespective of the exact scattering mechanism. We identify a Fermi Surface Complexity Factor:N_(v)^(*)K^(*) from the ratio of these two masses, which in simple cases depends on the number of Fermi surface pockets eN_(v)^(*) T and their anisotropy K^(*),both of which are beneficial to high thermoelectric performance as exemplified by the high values found in PbTe.The Fermi Surface Complexity factor can be used in high-throughput search of promising thermoelectric materials. | Zachary M.Gibbs Francesco Ricci Guodong Li Hong Zhu Kristin Persson Gerbrand Ceder Geoffroy Hautier Anubhav Jain G.Jeffrey Snyder | 2017 | npj Computational Materials2017,,1: | 11
Multi-omics analyses of 398 foxtail millet accessions reveal genomic regions associated with domestication, metabolite traits, and antiinflammatory effects显示文摘Foxtail millet(Setaria italica),which was domesticatedfromthewild speciesgreenfoxtail(Setaria viridis),isa richsource of phytonutrientsfor humans. To evaluate how breeding changed themetabolome offoxtail millet grains,we generated and analyzed the datasets encompassing the genomes, transcriptomes, metabolomes, and anti-inflammatory indices from 398 foxtail millet accessions. We identified hundreds of common variants that influence numerous secondary metabolites. We observed tremendous differences in natural variations of the metabolites and their underlying genetic architectures between distinct sub-groups of foxtail millet.Furthermore,we found that the selection of the gene alleles associated with yellow grains led to altered profiles of metabolites such as carotenoids and endogenous phytohormones.Using CRiSPR-mediated genome editing wevalidated the function of PHYTOENE SYNTHASE1(PSY1)gene in affecting milletgrain colorand quality.Interestingly, our in vitro cell inflammation assays showed that 83 metabolites in millet grains have anti-inflammatory effects.Taken together,ourmulti-omics study illustrates how the breeding history of foxtail millet has shaped its metabolite profile. The datasets we generated in this study also provide important resources for further understanding how millet grain quality is affected by different metabolites, laying the foundations for future millet genetic research and metabolome-assisted improvement. | Xukai Li Jianhua Gao Jingyi Song Kai Guo Siyu Hou Xingchun Wang Qiang He Yanyan Zhang Yakun Zhang Yulu Yang Jiaoyan Tang Hailang Wang Staffan Persson Mingquan Huang Lishuai Xu Linlin Zhong Dongqin Li Yongming Liu Hua Wu Xianmin Diao Peng Chen Xiaowen Wang Yuanhuai Han | 2022 | Molecular Plant2022,15,8: | 8
Investigation of CRISPR/Cas9-induced SD1 rice mutants highlights the importance of molecular characterization in plant molecular breeding显示文摘Although Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats(CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated 9(Cas9)system has been widely used for basic research in model plants, its application for applied breeding in crops has faced strong regulatory obstacles, due mainly to a poor understanding of the authentic output of this system, particularly in higher generations. In this study, different from any previous studies,we investigated in detail the molecular characteristics and production performance of CRISPR/Cas9-generated SD1(semi-dwarf 1)mutants from T2 to T4 generations,of which the selection of T1 and T2 was done only by visual phenotyping for semidwarf plants. Our data revealed not only on-and off-target mutations with small or lager indels but also exogenous elements in T2 plants. All indel mutants passed stably to T3 or T4 without additional modifications independent on the presence of Cas9,while some lines displayed unexpected hereditary patterns of Cas9 or some exogenous elements. In addition, effects of various SD1 alleles on rice height and yield differed depending on genetic backgrounds.Taken together, our data showed that the CRISPR/Cas9 system is effective in producing homozygous mutants for functional analysis, but it may be not as precise as expected in rice, and that early and accurate molecular characterization and screening must be carried out for generations before transitioning of the CRISPR/Cas9 system from laboratory to field. | Sukumar Biswas Jiaqi Tian Rong Li Xiaofei Chen Zhijing Luo Mingjiao Chen Xiangxiang Zhao Dabing Zhang Staffan Persson Zheng Yuan Jianxin Shi | 2020 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2020,47,5: | 4
Electrochemical Lithium Storage Performance of Molten Salt Derived V_(2)SnC MAX Phase显示文摘MAX phases are gaining attention as precursors of two-dimensional MXenes that are intensively pursued in applications for electrochemical energy storage. Here,we report the preparation of V_(2)SnC MAX phase by the molten salt method.V_(2)SnC is investigated as a lithium storage anode, showing a high gravimetric capacity of 490 mAh g−1 and volumetric capacity of 570 mAh cm^(−3) as well as superior rate performance of 95 mAh g^(−1)(110 mAh cm^(−3))at 50 C,surpassing the ever-reported performance of MAX phase anodes.Sup-ported by operando X-ray diffraction and density functional theory,a charge storage mechanism with dual redox reaction is proposed with a Sn-Li(de)alloying reaction that occurs at the edge sites of V_(2)SnC particles where Sn atoms are exposed to the electrolyte followed by a redox reaction that occurs at V_(2)C layers with Li.This study offers promise of using MAX phases with M-site and A-site elements that are redox active as high-rate lithium storage materials. | Youbing Li Guoliang Ma Hui Shao Peng Xiao Jun Lu Jin Xu Jinrong Hou Ke Chen Xiao Zhang Mian Li Per OÅPersson Lars Hultman Per Eklund Shiyu Du Zhifang Chai Zhengren Huang Na Jin Jiwei Ma Ying Liu Zifeng Lin Qing Huang | 2021 | Nano-Micro Letters2021,13,10: | 2

| 17 | Morphology of living cells cultured on nanowire arrays with varying nanowire densities and diameters显示文摘Vertical nanowire arrays are increasingly investigated for their applications in steering cell behavior. The geometry of the array is an important parameter, which influences the morphology and adhesion of cells. Here, we investigate the effects of array geometry on the morphology of MCF7 cancer cells and MCF10 A normal-like epithelial cells. Different gallium phosphide nanowire array-geometries were produced by varying the nanowire density and diameter. Our results show that the cell size is smaller on nanowires compared to flat gallium phosphide. The cell area decreases with increasing the nanowire density on the substrate. We observed an effect of the nanowire diameter on MCF10 A cells, with a decreased cell area on 40 nm diameter nanowires, compared to 60 and 80 nm diameter nanowires in high-density arrays. The focal adhesion morphology depends on the extent to which cells are contacting the substrate. For low nanowire densities and diameters, cells are lying on the substrate and we observed large focal adhesions at the cell edges. In contrast, for high nanowire densities and diameters, cells are lying on top of the nanowires and we observed point-like focal adhesions distributed over the whole cell. Our results constitute a step towards the ability to fine-tune cell behavior on nanowire arrays. | Zhen Li Henrik Persson Karl Adolfsson Stina Oredsson Christelle N.
