1Colorectal carcinogenesis:Insights into the cell death and signal transduction pathways:A review显示文摘Colorectal carcinogenesis(CRC) imposes a major health burden in developing countries. It is the third major cause of cancer deaths. Despite several treatment strategies, novel drugs are warranted to reduce the severity of this disease. Adenomatous polyps in the colon are the major culprits in CRC and found in 45% of cancers, especially in patients 60 years of age. Inflammatory polyps are currently gaining attention in CRC, and a growing body of evidence denotes the role of inflammation in CRC. Several experimental models are being employed to investigate CRC in animals, which include the APC^(min/+) mouse model, Azoxymethane, Dimethyl hydrazine, and a combination of Dextran sodium sulphate and dimethyl hydrazine. During CRC progression, several signal transduction pathways are activated. Among the major signal transduction pathways are p53, Transforming growth factor beta, Wnt/β-catenin, Delta Notch, Hippo signalling, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 pathways. These signalling pathways collaborate with cell death mechanisms, which include apoptosis, necroptosis and autophagy, to determine cell fate. Extensive research has been carried out in our laboratory to investigate these signal transduction and cell death mechanistic pathways in CRC. 3Syzygium cumini(L.)Skeels:A review of its phytochemical constituents and traditional uses显示文摘Syzygium cumini(S.cumini)(L.) Skeels(jambolan) is one of the widely used medicinal plants in the treatment of various diseases in particular diabetes.The present review has been primed to describe the existing data on the information on botany,phytochemical constituents,traditional uses and pharmacological actions of 5.cumini(L.) Skeels(jambolan).Electronic database search was conducted with the search terms of Eugenia jambolana,S.cumini,jambolan,common plum and java plum.The plant has been viewed as an antidiabetic plant since it became commercially available several decades ago.During last four decades,numerous folk medicine and scientific reports on the antidiabetic effects of this plant have been cited in the literature.The plant is rich in compounds containing anthocyanins,glucoside,ellagic acid,isoquercetin,kaemferol and myrecetin.The seeds are claimed to contain alkaloid,jambosine,and glycoside jambolin or antimellin,which halts the diastalic conversion of starch into sugar.The vast number of literatures found in the database revealed that the extracts of different parts of jambolan showed significant pharmacological actions.We suggest that there is a need for further investigation to isolate active principles which confer the pharmacological action.Hence identification of such active compounds is useful for producing safer drugs in the treatment of various ailments including diabetes.Muniappan Ayyanar Pandurangan Subash-Babu 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,3:4
4Investigation of anticancer potencies of newly generated Schiff base imidazolylphenylheterocyclic-2-ylmethylenethiazole-2-amines显示文摘A new series of multi-heterocyclic Schiff base was constructed starting from 4'-(imidazol-1-yl[56_TD$IF])-acetophenone which was converted to its 2-bromoethanone precursor which on cyclic condensation with thiourea yielded final thiazol-2-amine intermediate(3) to be reacted with substituted aldehydes to generate final imidazolylphenylheterocyclic-2-ylmethylenethiazole-2-amines(4a–4i). New Schiff base was investigated for their in vitro cytotoxic efficacies against a panel of three human cancer cell lines namely, MCF7(human breast cancer), HCT116(human colon cancer), and DU145(human prostate cancer) and one normal skin fibroblast(SF). Most of these synthetic derivatives shown important cytotoxic actions against individual carcinoma cell line collections, but weak actions against SF, which is as anticipated. Observations of SAR suggested that the difference in the characteristics of substituents attached to the Schiff base function leads to the interesting variations within pharmacological effects of resultant molecular systems. Structural analysis performed using FT-IR,~1H NMR,^(13)C NMR spectroscopy and CHN analysis for final potent anticancer Schiff base, which warrant further investigations.Nikhil M. Parekh Bhupendra M.
