1Worldwide long-distance dispersal favored by epizoochorous traits in the biogeographic history of Omphalodeae (Boraginaceae)显示文摘Biogeographic dispersal is supported by numerous phylogenetic results.In particular,transoceanic dispersal,rather than vicariance,is suggested for some plant lineages despite current long distances between America and Europe.However,few studies on the biogeographic history of plants have also studied the role of diaspore syndromes in long-distance dispersal(LDD).Species of the tribe Omphalodeae(Boraginaceae)offer a suitable study system because the species have a wide variety of diaspore traits related to LDD and different lineages conform to patched worldwide distributions on three distant continents(Europe,America and New Zealand).Our aim is to reconstruct the biogeographical history of the Omphalodeae and to investigate the role of diaspore traits favoring LDD and current geographic distributions.To this end,a time-calibrated phylogeny with 29 of 32 species described for Omphalodeae was reconstructed using biogeographical analyses(BioGeoBEARS,Lagrange)and models(DEC and DIVA)under different scenarios of land connectivity.Character-state reconstruction(SIMMAP)and diversification rate estimations of the main lineages were also performed.The main result is that epizoochorous traits have been the ancestral state of LDD syndromes in most dades.An early diversification age of the tribe is inferred in the Western Mediterranean during late Oligocene.Colonization of the New World by Omphalodeae,followed by fast lineage differentiation,took place sometime in the Oligocene-Miocene boundary,as already inferred for other angiosperm genera.In contrast,colonization of remote islands(New Zealand,Juan Fernandez)occurred considerably later in the Miocene-Pliocene boundary.Ana Otero Pedro Jimenez-Mejias Virginia Valcarcel Pablo Vargas 2019Journal of Systematics and Evolution2019,57,6:3
2Phylogeographic sampling guided by species distribution modeling reveals the Quaternary history of the Mediterranean-Canarian Cistus monspeliensis(Cistaceae)显示文摘Accurate inference in phylogeography requires appropriate sampling strategies.Complex questions demand a large sample size at both the population and genetic levels to obtain precise reconstructions.This is the case of the phylogeographic history of Cistus monspeliensis,a plant that displays low plastid(cpDNA)diversity in the Mediterranean Basin but high diversity in the Canary Islands.Here,we aimed to identify Mediterranean refugial areas and to accurately quantify inter-island colonization events in the Canaries.Using a previous study as starting point,we increased sample size in two ways:(i)additional sampling of plastid genetic markers(from 1041 to 1899 bp);and(ii)additional sampling of populations(from 47 to 69)in long-term persistence areas suggestedby species distribution modeling(SDM).The synergy between SDM and extended population sampling helped find higher genetic diversity.Our deeper phylogeographic sampling of C.monspeliensis revealed the following:(i)potential refugia in long-term persistence areas with high cpDNA diversity in western Europe and the Canary lslands;and(ii)a significant increase(from 7 to 12)in the number of inferred inter-island colonization events across the archipelago.Our results stress the usefulness of SDM to identify the genetic signature associated with potential refugial areas.We herein propose a field sampling approach based on SDM that,in combination with a larger cpDNA sampling,can help answer a wide array of phylogeographic questions,such as the location of Quaternary refugia and number of colonizations across archipelagos.Alberto J.Coello Mario Fernandez-Mazuecos Carlos Garcia-Verdugo Pablo Vargas 2021Journal of Systematics and Evolution2021,59,2:2
3Sliding walls: a new paradigm for fluidic actuation and protocol implementation in microfluidics显示文摘Currently,fluidic control in microdevices is mainly achieved either by external pumps and valves,which are expensive and bulky,or by valves integrated in the chip.Numerous types of internal valves or actuation methods have been proposed,but they generally impose difficult compromises between performance and fabrication complexity.We propose here a new paradigm for actuation in microfluidic devices based on rigid or semi-rigid walls with transversal dimensions of hundreds of micrometres that are able to slide within a microfluidic chip and to intersect microchannels with hand-driven or translation stage-based actuation.With this new concept for reconfigurable microfluidics,the implementation of a wide range of functionalities was facilitated and allowed for no or limited dead volume,low cost and low footprint.We demonstrate here several fluidic operations,including on/off or switch valving,where channels are blocked or reconfigured depending on the sliding wall geometry.The valves sustain pressures up to 30kPa.Pumping and reversible compartmentalisation of large microfluidic chambers were also demonstrated.This last possibility was applied to a“4D”migration assay of dendritic cells in a collagen gel.Finally,sliding walls containing a hydrogel-based membrane were developed and used to concentrate,purify and transport biomolecules from one channel to another,such functionality involving complex fluidic transport patterns not possible in earlier microfluidic devices.Overall,this toolbox is compatible with“soft lithography”technology,allowing easy implementation within usual fabrication workflows for polydimethylsiloxane chips.This new technology opens the route to a variety of microfluidic applications,with a focus on simple,hand-driven devices for point-of-care or biological laboratories with low or limited equipment and resources.Bastien Venzac Yang Liu Ivan Ferrante Pablo Vargas Ayako Yamada Remi Courson Marine Verhulsel Laurent Malaquin Jean-Louis Viovy Stephanie Descroix 2020Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1:1

6Potential role of lava lizards as pollinators across the Galápagos Islands显示文摘Lizards have been reported as important pollinators on several oceanic islands.Here we evaluate the potential role of Galápagos lava lizards(Microlophus spp.)as pollinators across their radiation.Over 3 years,we sam­pled pollen transport by 9 lava lizard species on the 10 islands where they are present,including 7 single-is­land endemics.Overall,only 25 of 296 individuals sampled(8.4%)transported pollen of 10 plant species,the most common being Prosopis juliflora,Exodeconus miersii,Sesuvium sp.and Cordia leucophlyctis.At least 8 of these plant species were native,and none were confirmed as introduced to the archipelago.Despite the low overall proportion of individuals carrying pollen,this was observed in 7 of the nine lizard species,and on 8 of the ten main islands(Española,Fernandina,Floreana,Isabela,Marchena,Pinta,Santa Cruz and Santiago),sug­gesting that this is a widespread interaction.The results reported here support the potential role of lava lizards as pollinators across their radiation,although they may represent a relatively modest contribution when com­pared with birds and insects.However,we cannot discard that lizards may be ecologically significant for partic­ular plant species and ecosystems given the specific climatic condition and functional diversity of each island.Sandra HERVÍAS-PAREJO Manuel NOGALES Beatriz GUZMÁN María del Mar TRIGO Jens MOLESEN Pablo VARGAS Ruben HELENO Anna TRAVESET 2020Integrative Zoology2020,15,2:0

8Galápagos land iguana(Conolophus subcristatus)as a seed disperser显示文摘The role of the most common land iguana(Conolophus subcristatus)in the Galápagos Islands as an effective seed disperser is explored in this study.A total of 5705 seeds of 32 plant species were identified from 160 scats,4545 of which(80%)appeared visually undamaged.Germination trials of 849 seeds from 29 species revealed that at least 10 species remained viable after passing through the iguana’s gut,although only a small propor­tion of those seeds(4%)germinated.In any case,we argue that C.subcristatus exerts an important role on the 7 Galapagos islands where it occurs because of its abundance and capacity to ingest and disperse seeds at long distances.Our results strongly suggest that the Galápagos C.subcristatus plays an important role as a seed dis­perser of not only of native species but also some introduced plants in the Galápagos Islands.Anna TRAVESET Manuel NOGALES Pablo VARGAS Beatriz RUMEU Jens M.OLESEN 2016Integrative Zoology2016,11,3:0
9Time-calibrated phylogeny of Daphne(Thymelaeaceae):Pre-mediterranean temporal origin of the sclerophyllous Daphne gnidium显示文摘The sclerophyllous syndrome is characterized by well-defined traits(evergreen coriaceous leaves,inconspicuous flowers,and fleshy fruits).It has been hypothesized that lineages displaying the sclerophyllous syndrome show lower speciation rates than non-sclerophyllous lineages after the establishment of the mediterranean climate.Daphne gnidium displays sclerophyllous traits and some differentiation into three subspecies(gnidium,mauritanica,maritima),but the spatio-temporal origin of this taxonomic group is unknown due to the lack of a timecalibrated phylogeny of the whole genus.Here,we inferred phylogenetic relationships and divergence times of Daphne(32 species,238 samples)and other genera of Thymelaeaceae(16 genera,38 species,34 samples)using the internal transcribed spacer(ITS),which revealed that the current circumscription of Daphne is profoundly polyphyletic because some species are nested within the genera Wikstroemia and Edgeworthia.In contrast,D.gnidium formed a wellsupported clade as recognized in taxonomic accounts(subgenus Spachia).We found morphological and phylogenetic support for Daphne mauritanica as a monophyletic lineage sister to D.gnidium.Divergence between D.gnidium and D.mauritanica appears to have predated the establishment of seasonally dry conditions,which supports a premediterranean temporal origin of the lineage.A phylogeographical analysis within D.gnidium based on 66 nrDNA(ITS)and 84 cpDNA(rps16,trnV)sequences agreed with the low differentiation of the species in the Pleistocene despite its large distribution range.Altogether,D.gnidium illustrates one more example of the sclerophyllous syndrome with no speciation after the onset of the mediterranean climate.Cristina Ramos-Capón Pablo Vargas Fernando Pomeda-Gutiérrez Sara Martín-Hernanz 2024Journal of Systematics and Evolution2024,62,1:0
10Geomechanical modelling of cold heavy oil production with sand显示文摘The contribution of geomechanics to provide a rigorous quantification of porosity changes and associated permeability changes is often neglected when considering hydrocarbon production.However,it often has significant effects on production rates and ultimate recovery.For the cold heavy oil production with sand(CHOPS)technique,geomechanics is the key for reservoir simulations and promoting successful operations.In fact,the technique employed in CHOPS significantly affects the stress state within the reservoir by inducing“on-purpose”formation damage.It is not only vital to comprehend the behaviour of the reservoir during production,but it is crucial to identify how to harness that behaviour to improve productivity.In order to simulate the mechanical behaviour of unconsolidated sand material,an elastoplastic damage model was formulated.Fluid-flow-geomechanical modelling was then performed for predicting individual well behaviour and overall field performance.The combined effect of fluid-flow and geomechanics improved predictions with respect to oil,water,and gas production rates at key wells.Fluid rates matched satisfactorily most of the wells.In addition,the onset and propagation of equivalent wormhole networks were quantified throughout the production history.This enabled quantification of the volume of produced sand at individual wells.The comparisons between the measured and simulated sand volume rate at well locations showed reasonable agreement.Such calibrated models can then be used for the placement of new wells to optimize production.Assef Mohamad-Hussein Pablo Enrique Vargas Mendoza Paolo Francesco Delbosco Claudia Sorgi Vincenzo De Gennaro Surej Kumar Subbiah Qinglai Ni Jose Maria Segura Serra MRLakshmikantha Jos Alvarellos Iglesias Rebecca Daniels 2022Petroleum2022,8,1:0

12The Pyrenees as a cradle of plant diversity:phylogeny,phylogeography and niche modeling of Saxifraga longifolia显示文摘The current distribution of most species results from ecological niche,past distribution,and migrations during glacial–interglacial periods and in situ evolution.Here,we disentangle the colonization history of Saxifraga longifolia Lapeyr.,a limestone plant abundant in the Pyrenees and rare in other Iberian mountains and the African Atlas.Our working hypothesis is that the current distribution results from the shrinkage of a more extensive distribution in previous cold periods.We sampled 160 individuals of 32 populations across the whole distribution range and sequenced four DNA regions(rpl32-trnL,rps16-trnQ,trnS-trnG,and ITS).Ecological conditions were modeled to identify factors promoting high genetic diversity and long-term persistence areas for S.longifolia.In addition,we inferred phylogenetic relationships,phylogeographic divergence,genetic diversity,and migration routes.Seven plastid haplotypes were found,of which six occur in the Pyrenees and one in the High Atlas(Morocco).Discrete phylogeographic analysis(DPA)estimated migration routes predominantly from the Pyrenees to the other areas.Colonization events to those areas appear to have taken place recently given that the rest of the Iberian mountains do not harbor exclusive haplotypes.Iberian–Northern African distribution was inferred to be the result of long-distance dispersal because the split between Iberian and High Atlas haplotypes is estimated to have taken place in the last 4 million years ago when the Strait of Gibraltar was already open.Migrations from the Pyrenees to the south may have been favored by a corridor of predominant limestone rocks along Eastern Iberia,followed by successful overcoming the Strait of Gibraltar to reach northern Africa.Fernando Pomeda-Gutiérrez María Begoña García María Leo Mario Fernández-Mazuecos Mostafa Lamrani Alaoui Anass Terrab Pablo Vargas 2023Journal of Systematics and Evolution2023,61,2:0
13Frugivory and seed dispersal in the Galápagos:what is the state of the art?显示文摘The Galápagos are considered a model oceanic archipelago,with unique flora and fauna currently threatened by alien invasive species.Seed dispersal is an important ecosystem function with consequences for plant population dynamics and vegetation structure.Hence,understanding the seed dispersal abilities of the assemblages of frugivores will inform scientists and managers of the dynamics of plant invasions and improve management planning.Here we provide the first comprehensive review of published information on frugivory and animal seed dispersal in the Galápagos.We collected data from a variety of sources,including notes of the first naturalist expeditions,gray literature available only in Galápagos collections,and peer-reviewed journal articles.Plant–animal frugivorous interactions were retrieved from 43 studies and compiled into an interaction matrix describing 366 unique interactions.Most studies focused on fruit consumption as a driving force for natural selection,but seed fate was seldom considered.Although most(71%)of the interactions involved native plants,more than one-quarter(28%)involved introduced species.Interactions involving birds are considerably more common than those of reptiles and mammals,probably reflecting a research bias towards birds.Despite the historical importance of the archipelago as the laboratory for evolutionary and ecological research,understanding of its seed dispersal systems is limited.We end the review by suggesting 3 priority areas of research on frugivory and seed dispersal in the Galápagos:(i)target research to close knowledge gaps;(ii)the use of a network approach to frame seed dispersal at the community level;and(iii)evaluation of the effect of seed dispersal as a selective pressure acting upon plants and frugivores.Finally,the output of this research has to be properly delivered to the Galápagos National Park Services to help increase management effectiveness.Ruben HELENO Stephen BLAKE Patricia JARAMILLO Anna TRAVESET Pablo VARGAS Manuel NOGALES 2011Integrative Zoology2011,6,2:0
14New beverage based on grapes and purple-fleshed sweet potatoes:Use of non-standard tubers显示文摘Grapes and sweet potatoes are two different plant species that have distinct bioactive composition and the use of both in a non-alcoholic mixed beverage may be an interesting source of phytochemicals.Physicochemical and sensory characteristics,profile of phenolic compounds and biogenic amines of mixed juices of grapes (‘BRS Violeta’,‘BRS Cora’ and ‘Bordô’) and purple-fleshed sweet potato (‘JNRX12’) (0,10 and 30%) were determined.The beverage with sweet potato had high antioxidant activity attributed to the phytochemical compounds (e.g.anthocyanins,gallic acid,catechin,tryptophan,melatonin,serotonin and dopamine).Low levels of unwanted amines (histamine,tyramine,putrescine and cadaverine) were detected,showing that their consumption is safe.Purple-fleshed sweet potato had high levels of desirable amines,mainly melatonin,making the addition of sweet potato attractive for enriching beverages.The color,texture and sensory aspects were similar in whole grape juice and in mixed juices.Juices from ‘BRS Violeta’,with or without sweet potato showed high levels of bioactive compounds but were the least appreciated.The overall appearance and aroma of juices elaborated from ‘BRS Cora’ or ‘Bordô' grapes had similar acceptance,regardless of the addition of sweet potato.Beverages from ‘BRS Cora’ and 30% purple-fleshed sweet potato are the most interesting mixture due to tryptophan and melatonin contents.Mixed juices of grapes and sweet potatoes (10% and 30%) are viable options for the use of tubers outside the commercial standard,as they add interesting bioactive compounds to beverages and please the consumer.Letícia Silva Pereira Basílio Cristine Vanz Borges Igor Otavio Minatel Pablo Forlan Vargas Marco Antonio Tecchio Fabio Vianello Giuseppina Pace Pereira Lima 2022Food Bioscience2022,47,3:0
15Small size does not restrain frugivory and seed dispersal across the evolutionary radiation of Galapagos lava lizards显示文摘Frugivory in lizards is often assumed to be constrained by body size;only large individuals are considered capable of consuming fruits, with the potential of acting as seed dispersers. However, only one previous study has tested the correlation of frugivory with body and head size at an archipelago scale across closely related species. All nine lava lizards (Microlophus spp.) were studied on the eleven largest Galapagos islands from 2010 to 2016 to investigate whether frugivory is related to body and head size. We also tested whether fruit abunda nee in flue nces fruit con sumption and explored the effect of seed ingestion on seedling emergence time and percentage. Our results showed that across islands, lava lizards varied considerably in size (64-102 mm in mean snoutvent length) and level of frugivory (1-23%, i.e., percentage of droppings with seeds). However, level of frugivory was only weakly affected by size as fruit consumption was also common among small lizards. Lava lizards consumed fruits throughout the year and factors other than fruit abundance may be more importa nt drivers of fruit selecti on (e.g., fruit size, energy con tent of pulp). From 2,530 droppings, 1,714 seeds of at least 61 plant species were identified, 76% of the species being native to the Galapagos. Most seeds (91%) showed no external structural damage. Seedling emergence time (44 versus 118 days) and percentage (20% versus 12%) were enhanced for lizardingested seeds compared to control (uningested) fruits. De-pulping by lizards (i.e., removal of pulp with potential germi nation inhibitors) might in crease the chances that at least some seeds find suitable recruitment conditi ons.
