5Toxicological and histopathological effects of Dennettia tripetala seed used as grain protectant, food, and medicine显示文摘The study revealed the safety of Dennettia tripetala seed on man and the environment.Adult male rats weighing 0.158-0.168 kg housed in standard cages with free access to food and water were used for the experiments. The median lethal dose(LD50)was estimated using revised up and down procedure. The LD50 for D.tripetala seed extract was 5785 mg/kg and this evoked paralysis in rats for 4 days coupled with discharge from the eyes and eventual death. The least weight gain by the animals administered 75%seed powder of D.tripetala(4338.75 mg/kg)was an index of high powder concentration, whereas the weight loss experienced by group V animals is strongly attributed to chemical assault by permethrin designated as a standard insecticide. The high values of alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and urea in the groups administered 75%permethrin powder(4338.75 mg/kg)and 75%D.tripetala seed powder is an index of liver and kidney injury and dysfunction. The presence of normal serum levels of ALT,AST,alkaline phosphatase, and creatinine;normal liver and kidney structures;and normal weight gains in the animal groups fed basal diet(control)and basal diet plus 25%D.tripetala is a strong indication that 25%D.tripetala seed powder(1446.25 mg/kg)supplementation is not toxic to the liver and kidney and therefore supports normal organ functions. The LD50 recorded strongly indicates that D.tripetala has a moderately high safety margin.Supplementation of less than 50%(2892.5 mg/kg)is recommended in the safe use of the plant material as grain protectant, food, and medicine. The botanical insecticide,D.tripetala,is safer than the conventional synthetic insecticide, permethrin,on account of the latter showing evidence of kidney damage.Luke Chinaru Nwosu Chris Olukayode Adedire Emmanuel Oludele Ogunwolu Michael Olufemi Ashamo 2017Food Quality and Safety2017,1,3:0
6Effect of thermal and chemical modifications on the mechanical and release properties of paracetamol tablet formulations containing corn, cassava and sweet potato starches as filler-binders显示文摘Objective: To investigate the effects of acetylation and pregelatinization of cassava and sweet potato starches on the mechanical and release properties of directly compressed paracetamol tablet formulations in comparison with official corn starch. Methods: The native starches were modified by acetylation and pregelatinization. The tablets were assessed using friability(Fr), crushing strength(Cs), disintegration time(Dt) and dissolution parameters. Results: Starch acetylation produced paracetamol tablets that were stronger and had the best balance of mechanical and disintegration properties, while pregelatinization produced tablets that were more friable but had a better overall strength in relation to disintegration than formulations made from natural starches. Correlations mainly existed between Dt and the dissolution parameters t80, t2 and k1 in the formulations. Conclusions: Modification of the experimental starches improved the mechanical and release properties of directly compressed paracetamol tablet formulations. Thus, they can be developed for use as pharmaceutical excipients in specific formulations.Mariam Vbamiunomhene Lawal Michael Ayodele Odeniyi Oludele Adelanwa Itiola 2015Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2015,5,7:0
7Mental Health Impacts of Information and Communication Technology Usage in South Africa显示文摘This study examined mental health issues affecting the group of individuals who are in the social media contact list of the researchers. This was done by administering a closed structured questionnaire, covering information from participants’demographic characteristics, duration of time spent on ICT usage,to their perceived health effects thereof.Male respondents, largely unemployed are active ICT users, addicted to the Internet, and also suf-fer from unspecified ailments.Aged 31–35 and above, half of men and all women participants spend more than 5 h per day.High-intensive ICT use is associated,in general, with concurrent symptoms of information overload, depression and Internet addiction. It is insignificantly associated with composite stress.Medium intensive ICT use is correlated with fatigue and depression in equal measure but in opposite direction. There are significant differ-ences in demographic attributes as they explain intensity of ICT Usage. The older the employed survey partici-pants are,the less they suffer from composite stress. However, black South Africans suffer significantly from composite stress, fatigue and depression, though negatively from internet addiction. The results also indicate that South African men have negative experiences of composite stress, depression and internet addiction.Educated South Africans have negative experiences of fatigue, but positive experiences of composite stress, depression and internet addiction.Low intensive use of ICT has no impact on composite stress, fatigue and depressive moods of survey participants. It impacts negatively on internet addiction.Medium intensive use of ICT impacts posi-tively on survey participants’experiences of fatigue, but negatively on composite stress, depression and internet addiction.High-intensive use of ICT impacts positively on survey participants’experiences of composite stress and depression.Akinboade Oludele Akinloye Obareng Baldwin Manoko Mmafani Serote Trevor Taft 2021International Journal of Mental Health Promotion2021,23,2:0
