1Evaluation of berries of Phytolacca dodecandra for growth inhibition of Histoplasma capsulatum var.farciminosum and treatment of cases of epizootic lymphangitis in Ethiopia显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the berries of Phytolacca dodecundra(P.dodecandra) for its effect on Histoplasma cupsulatum var.farciminosum(HCF) and for the treatment of cases of epizootic lymphangitis(ELi.Methods:Samples were collected from un-ruptured nodules of cases of EL at Debre Zeit and Akaki(central Ethiopia).Mycologieal culture and isolation of HCF were performed at the Akliln Lemma Institute of Pathobiology.Phytochemical screening was done for n-butanol extract of P.dodecandra to delect alkaloids,saponins,phenolic compounds and flavonoids.The minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs) and minimum fungicidal concentrations(MFCs) ol aqueous and n-butanol extracts of P.dodecandra against FICF were determined by agar dilution assay.For the in vivo trial.5%simple ointment was prepared from n-butanol extract and applied topically to 24(twelve early and twelve moderate) cases of F.L.Results:Phytochemical screening showed that n-butanol extract ol P.dodecandra was positive lor alkaloids.saponins and phenolic compounds but negative for flavonoids.The MFCs of n-butanol and aqueous extracts of P.dodecandra were(0.039%-0.078%) and(0.625%-1.250%),respectively.The MFCs of n-butanol and aqueous extracts of P.dodecandra were(0.078%t-0.156%)and(1.250%-2.500%),respectively.The MIC and MFC of ketoconazole(positive control) was(1.200×10^(-5)%-2.500×10^(-5)%) and(5.000× 10^(-5)%-1.000×10^(-4)%),respectively while growth was observed on free medium(negative control).From the total of 24 treated cases of EL,14(58.3%) responded lo treatment;however,10(41.7%) did not respond to treatment.There was no significant difference in the degree of response to treatment between early and moderate cases(χ~2=0.086:P=0.408.Conclusions:It can be concluded that n-butanol extract of P.dodecandra demonstrates antifungal effects while the aqueous extract shows no antifungal activity.Negesse Mekonnen Eyasu Makonnen Nigatu Aklilu Gobena Ameni 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,7:2

4A comparative study of acidic,basic,and reactive dyes adsorption from aqueous solution onto kaolin adsorbent:Effect of operating parameters,isotherms,kinetics,and thermodynamics显示文摘Various studies were reported for the evaluation of the adsorption performance of kaolin clay using single dye types.This paper aimed to evaluate the comparative adsorption capacity of prepared adsorbents from Ethiopian kaolin for different dye types(Basic Yellow 28(BY 28),Congo Red(CR),and Reactive Red 120(RR 120)).Because different dye classes may have a significant impact on the removal efficiency by the prepared adsorbent.Moreover,we intended to investigate the interaction effect of adsorbent-sorbate in the adsorption phenomenon for the three different class dyes.The adsorbents from kaolin clay were prepared via mechanical treatment,beneficiation,and calcination(700℃).The effect of operating parameters(pH,adsorbent dose,contact time,dye concentration,and adsorption temperature)was evaluated.before and after adsorption of the adsorbents were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy.Furthermore,adsorption isotherm,kinetic models,and the thermodynamic processes in the adsorption phenomenon were computed.The percentage removal efficiency of dyes was recorded as 92.08%,88.63%,and 73.33%for BY 28,CR,and RR 120 dyes,respectively at the experimental condition:adsorbent dosage=1 g/100 mL,solution pH=9(BY 28),and pH=3(CR,and RR 120),contact time=60 min,initial dyes concentrations=20 mg/L,and temperature=30℃.The adsorption of adsorbates onto kaolin adsorbents was well fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models.The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic for all dyes.The comparative percentage removal of,with the same operational parameters and kaolin adsorbent,was recorded as BY 28>CR>RR120 resulting from their surface charge and molecular size/structure dyes properties.We confirm that the adsorption at each operational parameter and peak intensity of FTIR spectra,before and after adsorption,revealed that the different dye types have varied removal efficiency onto the prepared kaolin adsorbent.This is due to that being dominantly influenced by the electrostatic interaction and steric effects at the surface of the sorbent and sorbate characteristics.We deduced that the kaolin clay used as an adsorbent is highly dependent on the dye types and their featured characteristics.Tadele Assefa Aragaw Adugna Nigatu Alene 2022Emerging Contaminants2022,8,1:1

19Tree species determine soil seed bank composition and its similarity with understory vegetation in a semi-arid African savanna显示文摘Introduction:The presence of larger trees in semi-arid African savannas creates sub-habitats,which influences on herbaceous plant communities grown under their canopies differently from opened areas.Knowledge of seed banks accumulated in the soils over time beneath larger trees could facilitate the recovery of plant communities that might disappear due to sustained heavy grazing,prolonged fire,or other anthropogenic factors in semi-arid African savannas.However,the impact of larger trees on soil seed bank composition and its similarity with plant communities grown under their canopies are less understood in semi-arid African savannas.Therefore,we studied the effect of leguminous and non-leguminous tree species and their canopies on soil seed bank(SSB)composition and its similarity with understory vegetation(USV)in a semi-arid savanna of Ethiopia.Methods:We selected 20 matured trees from 3 dominant tree species,representing one leguminous(Acacia robusta Burch)and 2 non-leguminous tree species(Ziziphus spina-Christi and Balanites aegyptiaca(L.)Del),found in isolation,a total of 60 trees for this study.Under each selected individual tree,the species composition of USV were recorded using 1-m2 quadrat in four directions(north,south,east,and west)under the inside and outside tree canopies during the flowering stage.Similarly,soil samples in a 1-m2 quadrat were also collected under the inside tree canopies and their corresponding outside canopies,in each individual tree,for the determination of SSB composition,using a seed emergence method.Then,the soil was thoroughly mixed after removal of all roots and plant fragments,and spread over sand in plastic pots to a depth of 20 mm.The pots were placed at random in a glasshouse,examined every 3 days,for the first 2 months,and thereafter weekly for 6 months.A total of 960 soil samples were used for the determination of SSB composition during this study.Results:A total of 64 species were emerged from the SSB samples,of which 27 were grasses(19 annual and 8 perennial grasses),35 annual forbs and 2 woody species.Acacia robusta had a higher seedling density in the SSB compared to other tree species,whereas Z.spina-Christi had higher species diversity in the SSB than other tree species.Moreover,seedling density and species diversity were higher under the inside canopies than outside tree canopies.The mean similarity in species composition between the SSB and USV was low.However,it was higher under the leguminous trees than non-leguminous trees,and under the inside tree canopies than outside canopies.Conclusions:We found that mature tree species maintained a higher SSB species diversity and abundance under their canopies than the surrounding opened areas.Therefore,conservation of mature dominant tree species is of paramount importance for ecological stability and possible restoration of degraded semi-arid savannas under the changing climate and global warming.Zewdu Kelkay Tessema Belay Ejigu Lisanework Nigatu 2017Ecological Processes2017,6,1:0
20Infection of sheep by Echinococcus multilocularis in Gansu,China:evidence from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA analysis显示文摘BackgroundIn the normal life cycle of the parasite(Echinococcus multilocularis)that causes alveolar echinococcosis,domestic and wild carnivores act as definitive hosts,and rodents act as intermediate hosts.The presented study contributes to the research on the distribution and transmission pattern of E.multilocularis in China having identified sheep as an unusual intermediate host taking part in the domestic transmission of alveolar echinococcosis in Gansu Province,China.MethodsFrom 2020 to 2021,nine whitish different cyst-like were collected from the liver of sheep in Gansu Province for examination.A near complete mitochondrial(mt)genome and selected nuclear genes were amplified from the cyst-like lesion for identification.To confirm the status of the specimen,comparative analysis with reference sequences,phylogenetic analysis,and network analysis were performed.ResultsThe isolates displayed≥98.87%similarity to E.multilocularis NADH dehydrogenase sub-unit 1(nad1)(894 bp)reference sequences deposited in GenBank.Furthermore,amplification of the nad4 and nad2 genes also confirmed all nine samples as E.multilocularis with>99.30%similarity.Additionally,three nuclear genes,pepck(1545 bp),elp-exons VII and VIII(566 bp),and elp-exon IX(256 bp),were successfully amplified and sequenced for one of the isolates with 98.42%similarity,confirming the isolates were correctly identified as E.multilocularis.Network analysis also correctly placed the isolates with other E.multilocularis.ConclusionsAs a result of the discovery of E.multilocularis in an unusual intermediate host,which is considered to have the highest zoonotic potential,the result clearly demonstrated the necessity for expanded surveillance in the area.Nigus Abebe Shumuye Li Li Wen-Hui Li Nian-Zhang Zhang Yan-Tao Wu Yao-Dong Wu Wen-Jun Tian Lin-Sheng Zhang Xiao-Feng Nian Guo-Dong Dai Wei-Gang Chen Sheng-Zhi Gao Xue-Qi Tian Jun-Shi Liu Bin Li Nigatu Kebede Bao-Quan Fu Hong-Bin Yan Wan-Zhong Jia 2023Infectious Diseases of Poverty2023,12,4:0
