8Mapping rice-fallow cropland areas for short-season grain legumes intensification in South Asia using MODIS 250 m time-series data显示文摘The goal of this study was to map rainfed and irrigated rice-fallow cropland areas across South Asia,using MODIS 250 m time-series data and identify where the farming system may be intensified by the inclusion of a short-season crop during the fallow period.Rice-fallow cropland areas are those areas where rice is grown during the kharif growing season(June–October),followed by a fallow during the rabi season(November–February).These cropland areas are not suitable for growing rabi-season rice due to their high water needs,but are suitable for a short-season(≤3 months),low water-consuming grain legumes such as chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.),black gram,green gram,and lentils.Intensification(double-cropping)in this manner can improve smallholder farmer’s incomes and soil health via rich nitrogen-fixation legume crops as well as address food security challenges of ballooning populations without having to expand croplands.Several grain legumes,primarily chickpea,are increasingly grown across Asia as a source of income for smallholder farmers and at the same time providing rich and cheap source of protein that can improve the nutritional quality of diets in the region.The suitability of rainfed and irrigated rice-fallow croplands for grain legume cultivation across South Asia were defined by these identifiers:(a)rice crop is grown during the primary(kharif)crop growing season or during the north-west monsoon season(June–October);(b)same croplands are left fallow during the second(rabi)season or during the south-east monsoon season(November–February);and(c)ability to support low water-consuming,short-growing season(≤3 months)grain legumes(chickpea,black gram,green gram,and lentils)during rabi season.Existing irrigated or rainfed crops such as rice or wheat that were grown during kharif were not considered suitable for growing during the rabi season,because the moisture/water demand of these crops is too high.The study established cropland classes based on the every 16-day 250 m normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)time series for one year(June 2010–May 2011)of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)data,using spectral matching techniques(SMTs),and extensive field knowledge.Map accuracy was evaluated based on independent ground survey data as well as compared with available sub-national level statistics.The producers’and users’accuracies of the cropland fallow classes were between 75%and 82%.The overall accuracy and the kappa coefficient estimated for rice classes were 82%and 0.79,respectively.The analysis estimated approximately 22.3 Mha of suitable rice-fallow areas in South Asia,with 88.3%in India,0.5%in Pakistan,1.1%in Sri Lanka,8.7%in Bangladesh,1.4%in Nepal,and 0.02%in Bhutan.Decision-makers can target these areas for sustainable intensification of short-duration grain legumes.Murali Krishna Gumma Prasad S.Thenkabail Pardharsadhi Teluguntla Mahesh N.Rao Irshad A.Mohammed Anthony M.Whitbread 2016International Journal of Digital Earth2016,9,10:0
9Discharge water temperature assessment of thermal power plantusing remote sensing techniques显示文摘Thermal power plants are generally constructed near to sea coast to meet their requirement of coolingwater. The warm water discharge from the thermal power plant is one of the major environmentalconcerns in view of the thermal pollution in the sea water. The temperature limit for the warm waterdischarge from the thermal power plant has to be monitored and controlled. Coastal Gujarat PowerLimited (CGPL) operates (24×7) at an “once-through system” based sea water circulation for powergeneration. The used sea water is then discharged into the sea through an outlet channel. As per environmental norms, the discharge water temperature needs to be maintained below the stipulated “delta”rise (+7 ℃) with respect to ambient sea surface temperature at the inlet. We demonstrate the applicability of thermal remote sensing data in understanding the seasonal and temporal variations of thetemperature difference between the discharge water and the ambient sea water. We used thermal banddata from Landsat-8 satellite imagery to map water surface temperature and create temperature profilesalong the intake and outflow channels (till the sea), to understand the variation of temperature andestimate the “DT” between intake point and various observation points along the outflow. This analysiswas carried out for all 11 months (except June) of the year 2018 to correlate temperature variations withseasonal changes. Tidal conditions during the time of data acquisition were also considered to accountfor the effect of tides on DT. The result shows that the average temperature rise between intake andoutflow are maintained at ~3 ℃ across all the months of 2018, with minor variations in the months ofJuly and August. 10Nonselective beta‐blockers reduce mortality in patients with acute‐on‐chronic liver failure显示文摘Aim:Nonselective beta‐blockers(NSBBs)can reduce the incidence of complications in patients with cirrhosis and prolong survival.The safety and efficacy of NSBBs in real‐world settings in patients with acute‐on‐chronic liver failure(ACLF)identified by the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver criteria are unknown.This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of NSBBs in patients with Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver(APASL)‐defined ACLF Methods:In this retrospective,multicenter study,patients with ACLF with complete 30 days follow‐up from January 2019 to December 2021 were included.The primary objective was to compare 30‐day mortality among standard of care(SOC)and NSBB(+SOC)groups.The secondary objectives were to compare the incidence of infection,variceal bleed,and recompensation among both the groups.Results:A total of 346 patients were included.Only 26%(n=89)of them received NSBBs,while 74%(n=257)received only SOC.On Kaplan-Meier analysis,the incidence of mortality was 21%(95%confidence interval[CI]:16.20-26.50)in SOC group compared to only 8%(95%CI:3.22-15.53)in NSBB group at Day 30(p=0.005).Similarly,mortality in SOC group was 63%(95%CI:56.81-69.00)compared to 46%(95%CI:35.44-57.00)in NSBB group at 1 year(p=0.001).NSBB therapy could not reduce the incidence of infections or variceal bleed.Forty‐seven percent of patients in the SOC group and 73%of patients in the NSBB group(p<0.001)recompensated.Carvedilol was prescribed in 77.5%and propranolol in 22.5%of patients.Conclusions:NSBBs reduce mortality without any effect on infection or variceal bleed in patients with ACLF.However,only one in four ACLF patients are suitable for NSBB therapy.Anand V.Kulkarni Madhumita Premkumar Karan Kumar Juned A.Khan Baqar A.Gora Sowmya Tirumalle Sameer Shaik Mithun Sharma Rajesh Gupta Nageshwar D.Reddy Padaki N.Rao 2022Portal Hypertension & Cirrhosis2022,1,1:0
