1Towards 10 Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based visible light communication using a GaN violet micro-LED显示文摘Visible light communication(VLC)is a promising solution to the increasing demands for wireless connectivity.Gallium nitride micro-sized light emitting diodes(micro-LEDs)are strong candidates for VLC due to their high bandwidths.Segmented violet micro-LEDs are reported in this work with electrical-to-optical bandwidths up to 655 MHz.An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based VLC system with adaptive bit and energy loading is demonstrated, and a data transmission rate of 11.95 Gb/s is achieved with a violet micro-LED,when the nonlinear distortion of the micro-LED is the dominant noise source of the VLC system.A record 7.91 Gb/s data transmission rate is reported below the forward error correction threshold using a single pixel of the segmented array when all the noise sources of the VLC system are present.MOHAMED SUFYAN ISLIM RICARDO X.FERREIRA XIANGYU HE ENYUAN XIE STEFAN VIDEV SHAUN VIOLA SCOTT WATSON NIKOLAOS BAMIEDAKIS RICHARD V.PENTY IAN H.WHITE ANTHONY E.KELLY ERDAN GU HARALD HAAS MARTIN D.DAWSON 2017Photonics Research2017,5,2:23
2Wnt and BMP signaling crosstalk in regulating dental stem cells:Implications in dental tissue engineering显示文摘Tooth is a complex hard tissue organ and consists of multiple cell types that are regulated by important signaling pathways such as Wnt and BMP signaling.Serious injuries and/or loss of tooth or periodontal tissues may significantly impact aesthetic appearance, essential oral functions and the quality of life.Regenerative dentistry holds great promise in treating oral/dental disorders. The past decade has witnessed a rapid expansion of our understanding of the biological features of dental stem cells, along with the signaling mechanisms governing stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. In this review,we first summarize the biological characteristics of seven types of dental stem cells, including dental pulp stem cells, stem cells from apical papilla, stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth, dental follicle precursor cells, periodontal ligament stem cells, alveolar bone-derived mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs),and MSCs from gingiva. We then focus on how these stem cells are regulated by bone morphogenetic protein(BMP)and/or Wnt signaling by examining the interplays between these pathways.Lastly,we analyze the current status of dental tissue engineering strategies that utilize oral/dental stem cells by harnessing the interplays between BMP and Wnt pathways. We also highlight the challenges that must be addressed before the dental stem cells may reach any clinical applications. Thus,we can expect to witness significant progresses to be made in regenerative dentistry in the coming decade.Fugui Zhang Jinlin Song Hongmei Zhang Enyi Huang Dongzhe Song Viktor Tollemar Jing Wang Jinhua Wang Maryam Mohammed Qiang Wei Jiaming Fan Junyi Liao Yulong Zou Feng Liu Xue Hu Xiangyang Qu Liqun Chen Xinyi Yu Hue H.Luu Michael J.Lee Tong-Chuan He Ping Ji 2016Genes & Diseases2016,3,4:16
3Breeding wheat for resistance to Fusarium head blight in the Global North: China, USA, and Canada显示文摘The objective of this paper is to review progress made in wheat breeding for Fusarium head blight(FHB) resistance in China, the United States of America(USA), and Canada. In China, numerous Chinese landraces possessing high levels of FHB resistance were grown before the 1950 s. Later, pyramiding multiple sources of FHB resistance from introduced germplasm such as Mentana and Funo and locally adapted cultivars played a key role in combining satisfactory FHB resistance and high yield potential in commercial cultivars.Sumai 3, a Chinese spring wheat cultivar, became a major source of FHB resistance in the USA and Canada, and contributed to the release of more than 20 modern cultivars used for wheat production, including the leading hard spring wheat cultivars Alsen, Glenn, Barlow and SY Ingmar from North Dakota, Faller and Prosper from Minnesota, and AAC Brandon from Canada. Brazilian wheat cultivar Frontana, T. dicoccoides and other local germplasm provided additional sources of resistance. The FHB resistant cultivars mostly relied on stepwise accumulation of favorable alleles of both genes for FHB resistance and high yield, with marker-assisted selection being a valuable complement to phenotypic selection. With the Chinese Spring reference genome decoded and resistance gene Fhb1 now cloned, new genomic tools such as genomic selection and gene editing will be available to breeders, thus opening new possibilities for development of FHB resistant cultivars.Zhanwang Zhu Yuanfeng Hao Mohamed Mergoum Guihua Bai Gavin Humphreys Sylvie Cloutier Xianchun Xia Zhonghu He 2019The Crop Journal2019,7,6:12
41 Gbps free-space deep-ultraviolet communications based on Ⅲ-nitride micro-LEDs emitting at 262 nm显示文摘The low modulation bandwidth of deep-ultraviolet(UV) light sources is considered as the main reason limiting the data transmission rate of deep-UV communications. Here, we present high-bandwidth Ⅲ-nitride microlight-emitting diodes(μLEDs) emitting in the UV-C region and their applications in deep-UV communication systems. The fabricated UV-C μLEDs with 566 μm2 emission area produce an optical power of 196 μW at the 3400 A∕cm2 current density. The measured 3 dB modulation bandwidth of these μLEDs initially increases linearly with the driving current density and then saturates as 438 MHz at a current density of 71 A∕cm2, which is limited by the cutoff frequency of the commercial avalanche photodiode used for the measurement. A deep-UV communication system is further demonstrated. By using the UV-C μLED, up to 800 Mbps and 1.1 Gbps data transmission rates at bit error ratio of 3.8 × 10-3 are achieved assuming on-off keying and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation schemes, respectively.Xiangyu He Enyuan Xie Mohamed Sufyan Islim Ardimas Andi Purwita Jonathan J.D.McKendry Erdan Gu Harald Haas Martin D.Dawson 2019Photonics Research2019,7,7:9
5Conventional versus drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization:A better option for treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) is a minimally invasive procedure involving intra-arterial catheter-based chemotherapy to selectively administer high doses of cytotoxic drugs to the tumor bed along with ischemic necrosis induced by arterial embolization.Chemoembolization forms the essential core of management in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) who are not suitable for curative therapies such as transplantation, resection,or percutaneous ablation.TACE of hepatic cancer(s) has proven to be helpful in achieving local tumor control, and has supported the ability to prevent tumor progression, prolong patient life, and manage patient symptoms.Recent data have demonstrated that,in patients with single-nodule HCC ≤3 cm without vascular invasion, the 5-year overall survival with TACE was found to be comparable with hepatic resection and radiofrequency ablation.Used for several years,Lipiodol continues to play a vital role as a tumor-seeking and radiopaque drug delivery vector in interventional oncology.Efforts have been made to enhance the administration of chemotherapeutic agents to tumors.Compared with conventional TACE,drug-eluting bead TACE is a fairly new drug delivery embolization technique that permits fixed dosing and has the ability to provide sustained release of anticancer agents over a period of time. The present review discusses the basic procedure of TACE and its properties, and the effectiveness of conventional and drug-eluting bead chemoembolization systems currently available or presently undergoing clinical evaluation.Murtuza Razi Gu Jianping He Xu Mohammed Jameeluddin Ahmed 2021Journal of Interventional Medicine2021,4,1:9
6Allogeneic Vγ9Vδ2 T-cell immunotherapy exhibits promising clinical safety and prolongs the survival of patients with late-stage lung or liver cancer显示文摘Vγ9Vδ2 T cells are promising candidates for cellular tumor immunotherapy.Due to their HLA-independent mode of action, allogeneic Vγ9Vδ2 T cells can be considered for clinical application. To apply allogeneic Vγ9Vδ2 T cells in adoptive immunotherapy, the methodology used to obtain adequate cell numbers with optimal effector function in vitro needs to be optimized, and clinical safety and efficacy also need to be proven. Therefore,we developed a novel formula to improve the expansion of peripheralγδT cells from healthy donors. Then,we used a humanized mouse model to validate the therapeutic efficacy of expandedγδT cells in vivo;furthermore, the expandedγδT cells were adoptively transferred into late-stage liver and lung cancer patients. We found that the expanded cells possessed significantly improved immune effector functions, including proliferation, differentiation, and cancer cell killing, both in vitro and in the humanized mouse model.Furthermore,a phase I clinical trial in 132 late-stage cancer patients with a total of 414 cell infusions unequivocally validated the clinical safety of allogeneic Vγ9Vδ2 T cells.Among these 132 patients,8 liver cancer patients and 10 lung cancer patients who received≥5 cell infusions showed greatly prolonged survival, which preliminarily verified the efficacy of allogeneic Vγ9Vδ2 T-cell therapy. Our clinical studies underscore the safety and efficacy of allogeneic Vγ9Vδ2 T-cell immunotherapy, which will inspire further clinical investigations and eventually benefit cancer patients.Yan Xu Zheng Xiang Mohammed Alnaggar Léonce Kouakanou Jiawei Li Junyi He Jiashuang Yang Yi Hu Yan Chen Li Lin Jianlei Hao Jingxia Li Jibing Chen Man Li Qingling Wu Christian Peters Qinghua Zhou Jianshuang Li Yingqing Liang Xiaohua Wang Baohui Han Meili Ma Dieter Kabelitz Kecheng Xu Wenwei Tu Yangzhe Wu Zhinan Yin 2021Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,2:8

17Genome-wide identification of quantitative trait loci for important plant and flower traits in petunia using a high-density linkage map and an interspecific recombinant inbred population derived from Petunia integrifolia and P.axillaris显示文摘Petunia is a very important flower in the global floriculture industry and has played a critical role as a model in plant genetic studies.Owing to limited genetic variability in commercial germplasm, development of novel petunia phenotypes and new varieties has become increasingly difficult. To enrich petunia germplasm and facilitate genetic improvement,it is important to explore genetic variation in progenitor species that may contain highly valuable genes/alleles.In this study,an interspecific recombinant inbred population(168 recombinant inbreds)derived from Petunia integrifolia×P.axillaris were phenotyped for days to anthesis(DTA),flower count(Flower_C),flower diameter(Flower_D),flower length(Flower_L),plant height(Plant_H),plant spread(Plant_S),and plant size(Plant_Z)in 2014 and 2015.Transgressive segregation was observed for all traits in both years. The broad-sense heritability on a 2-year basis varied from 0.38(Flower_C)to 0.82(Flower_L).Ten QTL were consistently identified in both years and by two mapping strategies[multiple QTL mapping(MQM)in MapQTL and inclusive composite interval mapping(ICIM)in IciMapping].Major QTL explained up to 30.2,35.5,and 47.1%of the total phenotypic variation for Plant_S,Flower_L,and Flower_D,respectively.These findings should be of significant values for introgression of desirable genes from wild petunias into commercial varieties and future genetic improvement of this important flower.Zhe Cao Yufang Guo Qian Yang Yanhong He Mohammed I.Fetouh Ryan M.Warner Zhanao Deng 2019Horticulture Research2019,6,1:1
