| 10 | Comparison of dorsal penile nerve block alone and in combination with lidocaine–prilocaine cream in neonates undergoing circumcision: a randomized controlled study显示文摘Background Suboptimal neonatal circumcision analgesia causes a significant stress response.There is continued search for more effective analgesia for neonatal circumcision.We aimed to determine whether lidocaine–prilocaine cream(LPC)prior to dorsal penile nerve block(DPNB)offers better analgesia than DPNB alone.Methods A prospective randomized study of 72 neonates undergoing plastibell circumcision was randomized into two groups of 36 each.Group I received DPNB alone with 4 mg/kg plain lidocaine.Group II had 1 g LPC applied to the phallus 1 hour before DPNB.Serum cortisol levels were measured 30 min preoperatively and 30 min postoperatively.Heart rate(HR)and peripheral arterial oxygen saturation(SpO2)were noted at 30 min preoperatively,after DPNB injection,after excising the prepuce,and at 30 min thereafter.The primary outcome measure was change in serum cortisol levels,while secondary outcomes were changes in HR and SpO2.Results Both groups had increased mean serum cortisol levels,decreased mean SpO2 and increased mean HR from baseline.The rise in mean serum cortisol level was significantly lower in group II(8.09±4.53µg/dL)than that in group I(11.42±7.83µg/dL)(p=0.034).Changes in SpO2 and HR were significantly less in group II than that in group I patients(p<0.05),except for HR changes at 30 min after excision of the prepuce(p=0.086).Conclusion These data suggest that neonates who received LPC prior to DPNB experienced significantly less pain from plastibell circumcision than those who had DPNB alone. | Ibukunolu Olufemi Ogundele Chigbundu Collins Nwokoro Tewogbade Adeoye Adedeji Arua Obasi Igwe Collins Chijioke Adumah Ademola Olusegun Talabi Aderibigbe Modupe Shonubi Oludayo Adedapo Sowande | 2022 | World Journal of Pediatric Surgery2022,5,4: | 1 |

| 12 | Bioactive and nutritional characterization of modeled and optimized consumer-ready flakes from pseudocereal(Amaranthus viridis), high-protein soymeal and modified corn starch显示文摘Flake is consumed in many parts of the world.Flakes are majorly prepared from cereals.However,most flakes are deficient in protein and some other healthful substances.High-protein soymeal is rich in protein,mineral,amino acids,antioxidants,and other healthful substances.Formulating flakes with high-protein soymeal would improve the health status of consumers.This work investigated consumer-ready flake from amaranth,high-protein soymeal,and modified corn starch produced under the optimized condition and characterized with the aim to develop models that would give a healthful consumer-ready flake.Amaranthus viridis,corn,and soybean grains were sorted,wet-cleaned,and dried.Soybean grains were processed into high-protein soymeal,starch was extracted from corn grains while A.viridis grains were processed into flour.Formulated flour mixtures were developed into flakes using three-level factorial categoric factor design of response surface methodology.The flakes were analyzed using standard procedures.Optimal flour mixtures of high-protein soymeal(34.78 g/100 g),amaranth(56.52 g/100 g),and modified corn starch(8.70 g/100 g)were established.Results showed the optimized flakes contained per 100 g:29.05 g protein,6.00 g fat,4.10 g fibre,3.84 g ash,8.96 g moisture,249.74 mg calcium,272.35 mg magnesium,12.08 mg iron,618.42 mg phosphorus,6.41 mg niacin,4.85 mg pyridoxine,0.21 g tannin,1.85 mg phytate,2.96 mg alkaloids,908.24GAE total phenolics and 12.75mgRE flavonoids with good quality characteristics in amino acids.The study illustrated the feasibility of formulating quality consumer-ready flakes from amaranth,high-protein soymeal,and modified corn starch.The production process is scalable and could be employed for both domestic and industrial purposes. | Temitope Omolayo Fasuan Kenneth Chigozie Asadu Cynthia Chioma Anyiam Linda Obianuju Ojokoh Titilope Modupe Olagunju Judith Uchenna Chima Kingsley Osita Okpara | 2021 | Food Production, Processing and Nutrition2021,3,1: | 0 |

| 15 | Bioactive profile of borno brown Vigna unguiculata grains as influenced by pre-harvest synthetic chemicals显示文摘This study investigated the impact of pre-harvest synthetic chemical treatments on the post-harvest bioactive contents,pasting,colour,and thermal properties of borno brown V.unguiculata(L.)Walp grains.Seeds of borno brown V.unguiculata(L.)Walp was planted on an already ploughed,harrowed and ridged plot of land with a portion cultivated as organic and another non-organic.After 90 days,mature grains were harvested and analyzed using standard procedures.Results showed that a total of 44.33 g bioactive compounds/100g grain was present in the organic borno brown V.unguiculata grains whereas,20.56 g bioactive compounds/100g grain was present in the non-organic(control).The identified bioactive compounds in the organic grains included[heneicosane(4.50g/100g grain)];[12-Methyl-E,E-2,13-octadecadien-1-ol(4.09/100g grain)];[3-(2-Hydroxy-6-methylphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone(7.40 g/100g grain)];[Methaqualone(9.08 g/100g grain)].The non-organic contained[heneicosane(4.07g/100g grain)];[3-(2-Hydroxy-6-methylphenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone(5.09 g/100g grain)];[Methaqualone(10.61 g/100g grain)].Flavonoids,alkaloids,total phenolic,2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazl(DPPH)and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power(FRAP)contents of the organic grains were 19 mgRE/100g,3.40 mg/100g,1550 mgGAE/100g,2840μmolTEAC/100g,and 20.08 mmol Fe^(2+)/100g,respectively.The non-organic grains had flavonoids(11.31 mgRE/100g),alkaloids(1.86 mg/100g),total phenolic(1110 mgGAE/100g),DPPH(1779μmolTEAC/100g)and FRAP(12.24 mmol Fe^(2+)/100g).The peak viscosity of 111.52 RVU,final viscosity(141.25 RVU)and pasting temperature(82.01℃)were obtained for the organic grains while non-organic had peak viscosity of 93.10RVU,final viscosity(95.20 RVU)and pasting temperature(80.10℃).The colour parameters L^(*),a^(*),b^(*)and ΔE were 73.10,0.68,14.47 and 12.98 for the organic and 84.25,0.30,21.10,and 0.00,respectively for non-organic grains.The thermal property showed enthalpy(ΔH)and peak temperature(T_(p))of 3.12 J/g and 78.25℃ for organic,and 2.14 J/g and 76.28℃ for non-organic grains,respectively.Phenolic compounds profile showed that organic grains were richer in epicatechin,gallic acid,ferulic acid,chlorogenic acid,4-hydroxy benzoic acid,and catechin.Organic grains showed significant(p<0.05)superiority in bioactive compounds,phytochemicals,and antioxidants over non-organic grains.Good pasting properties of the organic grains showed that it could function as a food thickener.Organic borno brown V.unguiculata grains are rich in health-promoting compounds and could,therefore,be used as an ingredient in the development of functional foods. | Temitope Omolayo Fasuan Nneka Nkechi Uchegbu Titilope Modupe Olagunju Oyenike Olubunmi Falola | 2022 | Food Bioscience2022,45,1: | 0 |

| 17 | The impact of poverty on dog ownership and access to canine rabies vaccination:results from a knowledge,attitudes and practices survey,Uganda 2013显示文摘Background:Rabies is a neglected disease despite being responsible for more human deaths than any other zoonosis.A lack of adequate human and dog surveillance,resulting in low prioritization,is often blamed for this paradox.Estimation methods are often employed to describe the rabies burden when surveillance data are not available,however these figures are rarely based on country-specific data.Methods:In 2013 a knowledge,attitudes,and practices survey was conducted in Uganda to understand dog population,rabies vaccination,and human rabies risk factors and improve in-country and regional rabies burden estimates.Poisson and multi-level logistic regression techniques were conducted to estimate the total dog population and vaccination coverage.Results:Twenty-four villages were selected,of which 798 households completed the survey,representing 4375 people.Dog owning households represented 12.9%of the population,for which 175 dogs were owned(25 people per dog).A history of vaccination was reported in 55.6%of owned dogs.Poverty and human population density highly correlated with dog ownership,and when accounted for in multi-level regression models,the human to dog ratio fell to 47:1 and the estimated national canine-rabies vaccination coverage fell to 36.1%.This study estimates there are 729486 owned dogs in Uganda(95%CI:719919-739053).Ten percent of survey respondents provided care to dogs they did not own,however unowned dog populations were not enumerated in this estimate.89.8%of Uganda’s human population was estimated to reside in a community that can support enzootic canine rabies transmission.Conclusions:This study is the first to comprehensively evaluate the effect of poverty on dog ownership in Africa.These results indicate that describing a dog population may not be as simple as applying a human:dog ratio,and factors such as poverty are likely to heavily influence dog ownership and vaccination coverage.These modelled estimates should be confirmed through further field studies,however,if validated,canine rabies elimination through mass vaccination may not be as difficult as previously considered in Uganda.Data derived from this study should be considered to improve models for estimating the in-country and regional rabies burden. | Ryan MacLaren Wallace Jason Mehal Yoshinori Nakazawa Sergio Recuenco Barnabas Bakamutumaho Modupe Osinubi Victor Tugumizemu Jesse D.Blanton Amy Gilbert Joseph Wamala | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 0 |
