| 1 | Peaked abundance of Calanus sinicus earlier shifted in the Changjiang River (Yangtze River) Estuary:a comparable study between 1959,2002 and 2005显示文摘The sea surface temperature (SST) of the East China Sea (ECS) increased in the past decades,which may have a great impact on the ecosystem of the ECS,including the changes in plankton-population structure.In this paper,the changes in peaked abundance of Calanus sinicus in the Changjiang River (Yangtze River) Estuary were compared between 1959 and 2002,based on the data collected from the seasonally oceanographic cruises and those performed in spring of 2005.It was much higher in spring compared with that in other seasons both in 1959 and 2002.Furthermore,in spring 2005,the time for occurrence and decrease of the peaked C.sinicus abundance advanced about one month, accompanying the increase in the sea surface water temperature (SST).It peaked in June and decreased in July in 1959,however,in 2005,it peaked in May and attenuated sharply in early June.The earlier decrease of peaked C.sinicus abundance may further deteriorate the ecosystem in the Changjiang River Estuary and north nearshore of the ECS. | XU Zhaoli MA Zengling WU Yumei | 2011 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2011,30,3: | 11 |
| 2 | Effect of global warming on the distribution of Lucifer intermedius and L.hanseni(Decapoda) in the Changjiang estuary显示文摘We conducted an oceanographic censusin 1959,2002,and 2005 to evaluate changes in the temporo-spatial distribution and abundance of Lucifer intermedius and L.hanseni in the Changjiang estuary.In general,the abundance and frequency of occurrence(OF) for these two species were highest during the summer.We measured a significant change in the abundance and OF between years.The abundance and OF of L.intermedius increased from 3.7 individuals m 3 and 66.67%,respectively,in 1959,to 8.93 individuals m 3 and 85.19%,in 2002.In 1959,L.hanseni was only found during the summer(abundance:0.01 individuals m 3,OF:3.70%).However,in 2002,this species was collected during all seasons except the winter.Furthermore,abundance(0.47 individuals m 3) and OF(25.93%) were higher in 2002 than in 1959.Further increases in abundance and OF were measured during cruises during the spring of 2005.We hypothesize that global warmingis responsible for theincrease inabundanceofL.intermediusand L.hanseniand thenorthward expansionofL.hanseniinthe Changjiang estuary.Given our results,monitoring of both species may be useful to evaluate the effects of climate change. | Zengling Ma Zhaoli Xu Jin Zhou | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,10: | 9 |
| 3 | Impacts of solar UV radiation on grazing, lipids oxidation and survival of Acartia pacif ica Steuer (Copepod)显示文摘UV radiation is known to affect aquatic primary producers and their grazers. However, little has been documented on its effects on zooplankton grazing. In this study, the authors investigated the effects of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400-700 nm), ultraviolet-A (UV-A, 320-400 nm) and ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-320 nm) radiation on grazing, mortality and lipids oxidation of the copepod Acartia pacifica collected from the Xiamen Bay. After 30 min of the exposures, the copepod was fed in darkness with the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum at two cell concentrations (2.5 × 10 4 and 2.5 × 10 5 cells/ml). At the low cell concentration, the individuals pre-exposed to PAR (218.0 W/m 2 )+UV-A (48.2 W/m 2 ) or PAR+UV-A+UV-B (2.1 W/m 2 ) showed suppressed clearance and grazing activities compared with those receiving PAR alone, by 22.7% and 17.1% for clearance and by 22.6% and 5.5% for grazing rates, respectively. However, the suppression on clearance and grazing became indistinctive at the high food concentration. | 4 | Harmful algal bloom-forming dinofl agellate Prorocentrum donghaiense inhibits the growth and photosynthesis of seaweed Sargassum fusiformis embryos显示文摘Harmful algal bloom(HAB)is an ecological disaster to local mariculture.At present,its impact on macrophytes has not been well studied.In this study,we cultivated sexually propagated embryos of S argassum fusiformis-an edible seaweed-in Prorocentrum donghaiense suspensions at different cell densities(0,0.50×10^(5),0.75×10^(5),1.00×10^(5),and 1.50×10^(5) cells/mL)for 10 days,during which growth and photosynthetic activities of the embryos were determined,and a monocultivation was set up for comparison.Results show that the relative growth rate and photosynthetic activities of the embryos co-cultivated with P.donghaiense were inhibited mostly and significantly in the cell densities of 0.75×10^(5),1.00×10^(5),and 1.50×10^(5) cells/mL,and the inhibitory effects increased in overall with increased cell densities.The maximum relative electron transport rates(rETR max)and apparent photosynthetic efficiency(a)of co-cultivated embryos were all significantly lower than monocultivation ones on the 10 th day.Furthermore,the photosynthetic activity detected by chlorophyll-a fluorescence transient(i.e.,OJIP),the electron transport among electron transfer accepters of PSII(photosystem II)and that from PSII to PSI(photosystem I)was restricted,which is probably responsible for the decreases of rETR max andain the co-cultivated embryos.In addition,parts of the photosynthetic reaction centers of PSII in the co-cultivated embryos were inactivated.Therefore,P.donghaiense bloom could restrain the development and photosynthetic activities of S.fusiformis embryos,reduce the seedlings stock,and eventually hinder the development of S.fusiformis production industry. | Caixia WANG Min WANG Binbin CHEN Wenli QIN Lidong LIN Chuanjun DAI Hengguo YU Renhui LI Min ZHAO Zengling MA | 2021 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2021,39,6: | 1 |
| 5 | Competitiveness of alga Microcystis aeruginosa co-cultivated with cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii confirms its dominating position显示文摘Microcystis aeruginosa has always been regarded as the main culprit of cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater.However,in recent years,Raphidiopsis raciborskii has gradually replaced M.aeruginosa as the culprit of cyanobacterial blooms in some tropical and subtropical shallow lakes.To reveal which one plays a more dominant role,interactions between cylindrospermospin(CYN)-producing R.raciborskii and microcystins(MCs)-producing or non-MCs-producing M.aeruginosa strains were studied using bialgal cultures at different initial ratios of biomasses of the two species at 25℃.During the co-cultivation,the M.aeruginosa strains inhibited the growth and heterocyst formation of R.raciborskii filaments,and thus occupied a dominant position during the co-cultivation regardless of the initial biomass ratios in the cultures.In addition,the MCs-producing M aeruginosa strain contributed to a higher portion of the total biomass and exerted a stronger inhibitory effect on R.raciborskii compared with the non-MCs-producing strain.However,the growth of both MCs-producing and non-MCs-producing M.aeruginosa strains was stimulated by R.raciborskii in the co-cultures compared with M.aeruginosa monoculture,indicating that M.aeruginosa could outcompete R.raciborskii if given enough time,enabling it to develop into the dominant species even in very low initial concentration.To our best knowledge,this is the first report on the loss of heterocyst formation by a species of cyanobacteria that resulted from interactions between two different species of cyanobacteria.These findings indicate that it is difficult for R.raciborskii to replace the dominant position of M.aeruginosa under the experimental environmental condition,and the allelopathic effects of M.aeruginosa on R.raciborskii could significantly contribute to the success of M.aeruginosa. | Zengling MA Xiaoqiao ZHANG Renhui LI Min WANG Wenli QIN He ZHANG Gang LI Henguo YU Chuanjun DAI Min ZHAO | 2022 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2022,40,5: | 1 |
| 6 | Integrated microalgae culture with food processing waste for wastewater remediation and enhanced biomass productivity显示文摘Waste generation from food manufacturing facilities poses a serious hazard like environmental degradation, water pollution, and land pollution due to its high nutrient composition. Specifically, solid waste(powder) disposal requires additional energy sources in terms of scientific treatment, structured collection, and disposal packaging according to the safety regulation. Thus, this research discusses the viewpoint of integrating food processing waste as an organic carbon source with BG-11 medium for Chlorella vulgaris(FSP-E) growth. The food processing waste powders investigated in this study were obtained from milk, and biscuit manufacturing facilities. The culture medium was modified by combining both BG-11 and food processing waste powders to identify the optimal algal growth and biochemical content.Compared to the microalgae grown in BG-11 alone(IBG), the combination of biscuit waste and IBG produced higher biomass concentration(44%), with increased lipid(11%), protein(20%), and carbohydrate(57%) contents. Chlorella vulgaris was able to uptake nutrients from the culture medium with combination of food processing waste and IBG thus enhancing its growth. | 7 | Effects of residual chlorine on the mortality, grazing and respiration of Labidocera euchaeta (Copepoda)显示文摘In this study,the authors investigated the effects of residual chlorine on mortality,grazing and respiration of Labidocera euchaeta in laboratory.The grazing rate was evaluated by subtraction method of food concentration and respiration rate was measured using oxygen electrode.It was found that the lethal effect of residual chlorine on L.euchaeta increased with enhanced concentration and prolonged duration.The medium lethal concentration (LC 50 ) of chlorine for L.euchaeta in 24 h was about 0.58 mg/L and the safe concentration was about 0.21 mg/L.However,the grazing and respiration of L.euchaeta decreased by 32.6% and 18.9% when exposed to 0.2 mg/L residual chlorine for 4 h.It indicated that the physiological activities of zooplankton could be suppressed by the residual chlorine less than the safety concentration.Therefore,both survival and physiological activities of the organisms living in the thermal (nuclear) power plant discharging waters should be considered when carrying out the ecological risks assessment. | MA Zengling LIN Hongping GU Xiaolian XU Zhaoli | 2011 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2011,30,2: | 0 |

| 9 | Tidal water exchanges can shape the phytoplankton community structure and reduce the risk of harmful cyanobacterial blooms in a semi-closed lake显示文摘For estuaries,inland lakes play a vital role in the ecological balance under the impact of tide s.The effect of tides-induced water exchange on phytoplankton community in a semi-closed lake was studied and compared with that of an adjacent closed lake in the Oujiang River mouth in Zhejiang,East China Sea,from June 29,2020 to June 14,2021.Results show that the dominant species,abundance,dominance,and diversity of the phytoplankton species between the two lakes were significantly different.In the closed lake,cyanobacteria were the dominant species during the study period.However.in the semi-closed lake,the diversification of the dominant species was greater,and some species of diatoms and green algae became dominant.The average phytoplankton abundance in the closed lake was 6 times of that in the semi-closed lake.The average dominance of cyanobacteria in the closed lake was 0.96,and those in the semi-closed lake and the Oujiang River were 0.51 and 0.22,respectively.Cyanobacterial blooms occurred throughout the study time in the closed lake but not in the semi-closed one.Furthermore,the species diversity richness of the phytoplankton in the semi-closed lake was higher than that of the closed one,and the phytoplankton community between the closed lake and semi-closed lake could be divided into distinctly different groups based on non-metic multidimensional scaling analysis(NMDS)and analysis of similarities(ANOSIM)analysis.The salinity of the water was significantly greater and the transparency significantly smaller in the semi-closed lake than those in the closed lake.Therefore,water exchange driven by local tidal movement increased salinity and decreased transparency of water,which consequently shaped the community structures of different phytoplankton and reduced the risk of a cyanobacterial bloom outbreak in the semi-closed lake. | Wenxu ZHENG Renhui LI Wenli QIN Binbin CHEN Min WANG Wanchun GUAN Xiaoling ZHANG Qiao YANG Min ZHAO Zengling MA | 2022 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2022,40,5: | 0 |
| 10 | Oxidative stress responses to cadmium in the seedlings of a commercial seaweed Sargassum fusiforme显示文摘Cadmium(Cd)is a common heavy metal pollutant in the aquatic environment,generally toxic to plant growth and leading to growth inhibition and biomass reduction.To study the oxidation resistance in Sargassum fusiforme seedlings in response to inorganic Cd stress,we cultured the seedlings under two different Cd levels:natural seawater and high Cd stress.High Cd stress significantly inhibited the seedlings growth,and darkened the thalli color.Additionally,the pigment contents,growth rate,peroxidase(POD)activity,dehydroascorbic acid(DHA)content,and glutathione reductase(GR)activity in S.fusiforme were significantly reduced by high Cd treatment.Contrarily,the Cd accumulation,Cd2+absorption rate,dark respiration/net photosynthetic rate(Rd/Pn),ascorbic acid(Vc)content,soluble protein(SP)content,glutathione(GSH),and the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and catalase(CAT)of S.fusiforme under Cd treatment significantly increased compared to the control group.The decrease of malondialdehyde(MDA)was not significant.Although S.fusiforme seedlings increased the antioxidant activities of POD,SOD,Vc,and the AsA-GSH cycle to disseminate H2O2 and maintain healthy metabolism,high Cd stress caused Cd accumulation in the stem and leaves of S.fusiforme seedlings.The excessive Cd significantly restricted photosynthesis and reduced photosynthetic pigments in the seedlings,resulting in growth inhibition and deep morphological color,especially of the stems.High levels of Cd in seawater had toxic effects on commercial S.fusiforme seedlings,and risked this edible seaweed for human food. | Tiantian Zhang Minheng Hong Mingjiang Wu Binbin Chen Zengling Ma | 2020 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2020,39,10: | 0 |
