| 1 | Site effects on earthquake ground motion based on microtremor measurements for metropolitan Beijing显示文摘A campaign of microtremor measurements was conducted in summer 2007 for assessing local site effects of seismic strong ground motion in metropolitan Beijing. Using the measurements from over 600 sites with approximately 1―2 km spacing covering the entire area inside Beijing’s 5th Beltway, we present the analysis results in the form of contours of the predominant resonant frequency, the thick- ness of the uppermost soft sediments, and the ground motion amplification factor. The microtremor- derived soft sediment thickness is generally in agreement with previous results based on much sparser borehole data, with the revealing of more short-wavelength undulations, which coincide with major geomorphological and neotectonic expressions in metropolitan Beijing. This study provides additional valuable information to the earthquake-resistant design of civil infrastructures and seismic hazard response in metropolitan Beijing. | 2 | Ambient noise as the new source for urban engineering seismology and earthquake engineering: a case study from Beijing metropolitan area显示文摘In highly populated urban centers, traditional seismic survey sources can no longer be properly applied due to restrictions in modern civilian life styles. The ambient vibration noise, including both microseisms and microtremor, though are generally weak but available anywhere and anytime, can be an ideal supplementary source for conducting seismic surveys for engineering seismology and earthquake engineering. This is fundamentally supported by advanced digital signal processing techniques for effectively extracting the useful information out from the noise. Thus, it can be essentially regarded as a passive seismic method. In this paper we first make a brief survey of the ambient vibration noise, followed by a quick summary of digital signal processing for passive seismic surveys. Then the applications of ambient noise in engineering seismology and earthquake engineering for urban settings are illustrated with examples from Beijing metropolitan area. For engineering seismology the example is the assessment of site effect in a large area via microtremor observations. | 3 | Applications of the Hilbert-Huang Transform for Microtremor Data Analysis Enhancement显示文摘In this paper we discuss the use of the Hilbert-Huang transform(HHT) to enhance the time-frequency analysis of microtremor measurements. HHT is a powerful algorithm that combines the process of empirical mode decomposition(EMD) and the Hilbert transform to compose the HilbertHuang spectrum that contains the time-frequency-energy information of the recorded signals. HHT is an adaptive algorithm and does not require the signals to be linear or stationary. HHT is advantageous for analyzing microtremor data, since observed microtremors are commonly contaminated by nonstationary transient noises close to the recording instruments. This is especially true when microtremors are measured in an urban environment. In our data processing HHT was used to(1) eliminate the unwanted short-duration transient constituents from microtremor data and use only the coherent portion of the data to carry out the widely used horizontal to vertical spectral ratio(H/V) method;(2) identify and eliminate the continuous industrial noise in certain frequency band; and(3) enhance the H/V analysis by using the Hilbert-Huang spectrum(HHS). | 4 | Methane conversion under cold plasma over Pd-containing ionic liquids immobilized on γ-Al_2O_3显示文摘Pd-containing ionic liquid(IL) 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate(C6MIMBF4) immobilized on 7-Al2O3(Pd-IL/γ-Al2O3) was prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis.The influences of C6MIMBF4 loading and Pd on methane conversion to C2 hydrocarbons under cold plasma were investigated.FTIR and SEM analyses indicated that C6MIMBF4 had been successfully immobilized on 7-Al2O3 and the C6MIMBF4 showed excellent stability under cold plasma.The results of BET and methane conversion showed that with the increase in immobilization amount of C6MIMBF4 ontoγ-Al2O3,the specific surface area and pore volume of IL/γ-Al2O3 decreased,while the selectivity and yield of C2 hydrocarbons increased.The selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons was 94.6%when the loading of C6MIMBF4 was 40%,and the percentage of C2H4 in C2 hydrocarbons was as high as 64%when using Pd-IL/γ-Al2O3 as a catalyst with no conventional thermal reduction treatment. Optical emission spectra(OES) from the cold plasma reactor during methane conversion were also studied.The results indicated that the intensity of the C2,CH,H,and C active species from methane and hydrogen decomposition increased when IL/γ-Al2O3 or Pd-IL/γ-Al2O3 was introduced into the plasma system.Based on the analyses of the gas product and OES spectra,it can be concluded that the surface catalyzed reactions between plasma and ionic liquid were very important for the reduction of Pd2+ and the formation of C2H4. | Xiuling Zhang Lanbo Di Qian Zhou | 2013 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2013,22,3: | 2 |

The XRD and XPS analyses proved that Pd ions were reduced to partially crystallized metallic Pd nanoparticles in Pd/TiO_2-P. The XPS spectra also indicated that an enhanced metal-support interaction was formed due to the existence of partially crystallized Pd nanoparticles with lower coordination number in Pd/TiO_2-P. | 14 | Near-Surface Anisotropic Structure Characterization by Love Wave Inversion for Assessing Ground Conditions in Urban Areas显示文摘In many geophysical applications, neglecting of anisotropy is somehow an oversimplification. The mismatch between prediction based on isotropic theory and near-surface seismic observations indicates the need for the inclusion of medium anisotropy. In this paper, surface wave(Love wave) dispersion properties are used to estimate the anisotropic structure of the near-surface layered earth, which is modeled as media possess vertical transverse isotropy(VTI), a reasonable assumption for near-surface sedimentary layers. Our approach utilizes multi-mode surface waves to estimate both the velocity structure and the anisotropy structure. This approach consists of three parts. First, the dispersion analysis is used to extract dispersion curves from real data. Second, the forward modeling is carried out based on the dispersion equation of Love wave in a multi-layered VTI medium. Dispersion curves of multi-modes, which are the numerical solutions of the dispersion equation, are obtained by a graphic-based method. Finally, the very fast simulated annealing(VFSA) algorithm is used to invert velocity structure and anisotropy structure simultaneously. Our approach is verified by the synthetic dispersion curve generated by a VTI medium model. The estimation of shear wave velocity and anisotropy structure of surface wave data acquired at Rentschler Field, an urban center site on sediments in the Connecticut River valley reveals a simple structure of the sediment layer over a bedrock half space. The results are verified by other inversion results based on different data set obtained on the same site.
