| 1 | Report on Childhood Obesity in China (9): Sugar-sweetened Beverages Consumption and Obesity显示文摘Objective To explore the associations between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and obesity as well as obesity-related cardiometabolic disorders among children in China. Methods A total of 6974 (boys 3558, girls 3412) children aged 6-13 years participated in the study. Each participant's height, weight, waist circumference, fasting glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, high- density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured. The type of beverage consumption was determined using a self-administered questionnaire. Results SSBs were consumed regularly by 46.1% of the children. The prevalence [adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence internal (CI)] of obesity was 7.6% [as the reference group (ref.)], 10.1% [1.36(1.07, 1.74)], and 11.6% [1.46(1.21, 1.75)], among children who regularly drank milk, other beverages and SSBs, respectively. Regularly drinking SSBs elevated the likelihood of abdominal obesity [adjusted odds ratio (95% CI): 1.36 (1.17, 1.59)]. The prevalence [adjusted odds ratio (95% CI)] of obesity among children who regularly drank sports/caloric beverages, carbonated beverages, sweet tea, and plant protein beverages was 16.8% [2.00(1.31, 3.07)], 12.7% [1.52(1.23, 1.88)], 11.5% [1.52(1.18, 1.95)], and 10.4% [1.41(1.03, 1.94)], respectively, which was higher than that of regular milk drinkers [7.6 % (ref.)]. The prevalence [adjusted odds ratio (95% CI)] of abdominal obesity among children who regularly drank sweet tea, fruit/vegetable juices, and carbonated beverages was 17.7% [1.55(1.26, 1.90)], 16.2% [1.36(1.09, 1.70)], and 15.3% [1.24(1.03, 1.50)], respectively, which was much higher than that of regular milk drinkers [12.8% (ref.)]. Conclusions Regular SSB consumption was positively related to obesity and abdominal obesity. | 4 | Thermal performance analysis of non-uniform height rectangular fin based on constructal theory and entransy theory显示文摘A model of non-uniform height rectangular fin, in which the variation of base's thickness and width are taken into account, is established in this paper. The dimensionless maximum thermal resistance(DMTR) and the dimensionless equivalent thermal resistance(DETR) defined based on the entransy dissipation rate(EDR) are taken as performance evaluation indexes. According to constructal theory, the variations of the two indexes with the geometric parameters of the fin are analyzed by using a finite-volume computational fluid dynamics code, the effects of the fin-material fraction on the two indexes are analyzed. It is found that the two indexes decrease monotonically as the ratio between the front height and the back height of the fin increases subjected to the non-uniform height rectangular fin. When the model is reduced to the uniform height fin, the two indexes increase first and then decrease with increase in the ratio between the height of the fin and the fin space. The fin-material fraction has no effect on the change rule of the two indexes with the ratio between the height of the fin and the fin space. The sensitivity of the DETR to the geometric parameters of the fin is higher than that of the DMTR to the geometric parameters. | 6 | Optimal Waist Circumference Cut-off values for Identifying Metabolic Risk Factors in Middle-aged and Elderly Subjects in Shandong Province of China显示文摘Objective To study the optimal waist circumference(WC) cut-off values for identifying metabolic risk factors in middle-aged and elderly subjects in Shandong Province of China. Methods A total of 2 873 men and 5 559 women were included in this cross-sectional study. Metabolic syndrome(MetS) was diagnosed according to the definition of Chinese Diabetes Society in 2004. The relation between WC and MetS was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The optimal WC cut-off values were identified using the area under the ROC curve and the different diagnostic criteria for central obesity were compared. Results The WC was the risk factor for MetS independent of BMI, blood glucose, blood lipid, and blood pressure. The optimal WC cut-off value was 83.8 cm and 91.1 cm for identifying MetS in women and men, respectively. Compared with 80 cm and 85 cm for women and men, 85 cm and 90 cm had a higher Youden index for identifying all metabolic risk factors and MetS in women and men. | 7 | NLRP3 Deficiency Attenuates Secondary Degeneration of Visual Cortical Neurons Following Optic Nerve Injury显示文摘In the visual pathway, optic nerve(ON) injury may cause secondary degeneration of neurons in distal regions, such as the visual cortex. However, the role of the neuroinflammatory response in regulating secondary impairment in the visual cortex after ON injury remains unclear. The NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3(NLRP3) is an important regulator of neuroinflammation. In this study, we established a mouse model of unilateral ON crush(ONC) and showed that the expression of NLRP3 was significantly increased in the primary visual cortex(V1) as a response to ONC and that the NLRP3 inflammasome was activated in the contralateral V1 1 days–14 days after ONC. Ablation of the NLRP3 gene significantly decreased the trans-neuronal degeneration within 14 days. Visual electrophysiological function was improved in NLRP3-/- mice. | 9 | Clinical epidemiology and disease burden of bronchiolitis in hospitalized children in China:a national cross-sectional study显示文摘Background Bronchiolitis is a common acute lower respiratory tract infection(ALRTI)and the most frequent cause of hospitalization of infants and young children with ALRTI.Respiratory syncytial virus is the main pathogen that leads to severe bronchiolitis.The disease burden is relatively high.To date,few descriptions of the clinical epidemiology and disease burden of children hospitalized for bronchiolitis are available.This study reports the general clinical epidemiological characteristics and disease burden of bronchiolitis in hospitalized children in China.Methods This study included the face sheet of discharge medical records collected from 27 tertiary children’s hospitals from January 2016 to December 2020 that were aggregated into the FUTang Update medical REcords(FUTURE)database.The sociodemographic variables,length of stay(LOS)and disease burden of children with bronchiolitis were analyzed and compared using appropriate statistical tests.Results In total,42,928 children aged 0–3 years were hospitalized due to bronchiolitis from January 2016 to December 2020,accounting for 1.5%of the total number of hospitalized children of the same age in the database during the period and 5.31%of the hospitalizations for ALRTI.The male to female ratio was 2.01:1.Meanwhile,more boys than girls were observed in different regions,age groups,years,and residences.The 1–2 year age group had the greatest number of hospitalizations for bronchiolitis,while the 29 days–6 months group had the largest proportion of the total inpatients and inpatients with ALRTI in the same age group.In terms of region,the hospitalization rate of bronchiolitis was the highest in East China.Overall,the number of hospitalizations from 2017 to 2020 showed a decreasing trend from that in 2016.Seasonally,the peak hospitalizations for bronchiolitis occurred in winter.Hospitalization rates in North China in autumn and winter were higher than those in South China,while hospitalization rates in South China were higher in spring and summer.Approximately,half of the patients with bronchiolitis had no complications.Among the complications,myocardial injury,abnormal liver function and diarrhea were more common.The median LOS was 6 days[interquartile range(IQR)=5–8],and the median hospitalization cost was 758 United States dollars(IQR=601.96–1029.53).Conclusions Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory disease in infants and young children in China,and it accounts for a higher proportion of both total hospitalizations and hospitalizations due to ALRTI in children.Among them,children aged 29 days–2 years are the main hospitalized population,and the hospitalization rate of boys is significantly higher than that of girls.The peak season for bronchiolitis is winter.Bronchiolitis causes few complications and has a low mortality rate,but the burden of this disease is heavy. | Jiao Tian Xin‑Yu Wang Lin‑Lin Zhang Meng‑Jia Liu Jun‑Hong Ai Guo‑Shuang Feng Yue‑Ping Zeng Ran Wang Zheng‑De Xie | 2023 | World Journal of Pediatrics2023,19,9: | 1 |

| 11 | The effect of neighbor distance of magnetic nanoparticle clusters on magnetic resonance relaxation properties显示文摘Superparamagnetic iron oxide(SPIO) nanoparticle clusters are one unique form which can enhance magnetic relaxivity and improve the magnetic resonance imaging contrast at the same iron concentration, comparing to single SPIO nanoparticles. Controlling of cluster size and other structural parameters have drawn great interests in this field to further improve their magnetic properties. In this study, we investigated how the interparticle distance(also known as neighbor distance) of SPIO nanocrystals within clusters affect their magnetic relaxation behaviors.To adjust the neighbor distance, different amount of cholesterol(CHO) was chosen as model spacers embedded into SPIO nanocluster systems with the help of amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(ethylene glyco)-polyester. Smallangle X-ray scattering was applied to quantify the neighbor distance of SPIO clusters. The results demonstrated that the averaged SPIO nanocrystal neighbor distance of nanoclusters increased with higher amount of added CHO.Moreover, these SPIO nanocrystal clusters had the prominent magnetic relaxation properties. Methods We performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis based on random effect models to provide a pooled association measure. Results We subjected 8 studies(overall relative risks and 95% confidence intervals: 1.01, 0.72 to 1.43, I^2 = 64.4%) to meta-analysis. Subgroup analysis revealed a marginally significant association between radon exposure and kidney cancer in studies conducted in Europe. Two population-based studies provided no evidence for the increased risk of kidney cancer in the general population. Conclusion The association between radon and kidney cancer remains unclear but cannot be excluded because of its biological plausibility and the limited number and quality of existing studies.
