| 6 | Sol-gel derived HA/TiO_2 double coatings on Ti scaffolds for orthopaedic applications显示文摘Hydroxyapatite/titania (HA/TiO2) double layers were coated onto Ti scaffolds throughout for orthopaedic applications by sol-gel method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used for the characterisation of the phase transformations of the dried gels and coated surface structures. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) was used for the observation and evaluation of the morphology and phases of the surface layers and for the assessment of the in vitro tests. The in vitro assessments were performed by soaking the HA/TiO2 double coated samples into the simulated body fluid (SBF) for various periods. The TiO2 dipping-coating method at a speed of 12 cm/min, followed by a heat treatment at 600 ℃ for 20 min. The HA la lyaeyre wr wasa ssu cbosaetqeude bnytl ya dipping-coated on the outer surface at the same speed and then heat-treated at difference temperatures. The results indicat that the HA phase begins to crystallize after a heat treatment at 560 ℃. The crystallinity increases obviously at 760 ℃. SEM observations find no delamination or crack at the interfaces of HA/TiO2 and TiO2/Ti. The HA/TiO2 coated Ti scaffolds displays excellent bone-like apatite forming ability when it is soaked into SBF. | 7 | Argo floats revealing bimodality of large-scale mid-depth circulation in the North Atlantic显示文摘Analysis of Argo float trajectories at 1 000 m and temperature at 950 m in the North Atlantic between November 2003 and January 2005 demonstrates the existence of two different circulation modes with fast transition between them. Each mode has a pair of cyclonic-anticyclonic gyres. The difference is the location of the cyclonic gyre. The cyclonic gyre stretches from southeast to northwest in the first mode and from the southwest to the northeast in the second mode. The observed modes strongly affect the heat and salt transport in the North Atlantic. | 9 | Campylobacter concisus and inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘Investigation of the possible role of Campylobacter concisus(C. concisus) in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is an emerging research area. Despite the association found between C. concisus and IBD, it has been difficult to explain how C. concisus, a bacterium that is commonly present in the human oral cavity, may contribute to the development of enteric diseases. The evidence presented in this review shows that some C. concisus strains in the oral cavity acquired zonula occludens toxin(zot) gene from a virus(prophage) and that C. concisus Zot shares conserved motifs with both Vibrio cholerae Zot receptor binding domain and human zonulin receptor binding domain. Both Vibrio cholerae Zot and human zonulin are known to increase intestinal permeability by affecting the tight junctions. Increased intestinal permeability is a feature of IBD. It transforms the topological relation- ships between two simple spatial Objects A and B into point-set topology problem in terms of the intersections of A’s boundary ( A), interior (A0) and exterior (A - ) with B’s bound- ary ( B), interior (B0) and exterior (B - ). It is shown in this paper that there exist some limitations of the original 9-intersection model due to its definition of an object’s exterior as its complement,and it is difficult to distinguish different disjoint relations and relations be- tween complex objects with holes, difficult or even impossible to compute the intersections with the two object’s complements ( A B -, A0 B -, A - B, A - B0 and A - B - )since the complements are infinitive. The authors suggest to re-define the exterior of spa- tial object by replacing the complement with its Voronoi region. A new Voronoi-based 9-in- tersection (VNI) is proposed and used for formalizing topological relations between spatial objects. By improving the 9-interscetion model, it is now possible to distinguish disjoint rela- tions and to deal with objects with holes.
