8Banking Sector Development and Agricultural Productivity in Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC)显示文摘There is high pressure for investment capital and financial services for agricultural activities necessary for poverty reduction, economic growth, sustainable development and food security. This study investigated the long-term causation between banking sector development and agricultural productivity in the six Central African Economic and Monetary Community(CEMAC)states from 1990 to 2018,hypothesizing no causation between banking sector and agriculture output. With the autoregressive distributed lag(ARDL)model and vector error correction model(VECM),the study demonstrates that banking sector and agricultural productivity in the CEMAC region are related. It implies long-run relationship exists between banking sector and agricultural productivity in the CEMAC zone. The results reveal that bidirectional causality exists between banking sector and agricultural productivity in the CEMAC region. This is insinuating that in the CEMAC region, agricultural productivity and banking sector development are operating in mutualism. The findings indicate the reason to establish the banking sector using proper macroeconomic, legal and regulatory policies to boost agricultural productivity by creating incentive systems that channel more credit to agricultural investment and promoting the banking system.Chi Aloysius Ngong Kesuh Jude Thaddeus Josaphat Uchechukwu Joe Onwumere 2020Journal of Agricultural Science and Technology(B)2020,10,2:0

10The Impact of Prior Courses and Grades on STEM FTIC Likelihood of Passing Calculus 1:A Naïve Bayes Classifier显示文摘In this study,we investigate students’likelihood of passing Calculus 1,a keystone course, based on prior mathematics courses taken and their performance in those courses. With a sample of 918 First Time in College(FTIC)in Science,Technology,Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM)majors from 2015 to 2017 at a mid-sized public university in the United States,we used Naïve Bayes classification to analyze the data.We generated a predictive model with approximately 73%accuracy.Among the variables, receiving an A grade in a prior mathematics course was most likely to predict passing Calculus 1 at approximately 49%;it was also highly protective against failing. Our analyses showed that the type of prior course was only predictive up to 30%and was less useful than the prior course grade.Students’majors exhibited high variability and were not very predictive.Overall, courses that prepare students for Calculus 1 were less important than students’performance in those courses. In this regard, the higher the grade received in the prior course, the more likely the student was to pass Calculus 1.Thus,in terms of improving STEM retention and graduation rates, this suggests that improving students’performance would be more effective than revising curriculum in the prior courses.Jay Sparks Anthony Okafor Josaphat Uvah 2023US-China Education Review(B)2023,13,2:0
11Boosting STEM Success Through Calculus 2 Workshops显示文摘In this paper,we discuss the design, implementation, and assessment of an intervention measure,Calculus 2 Workshops,to improve students’performance in Calculus 2.The central role of Calculus 2 in Science,Technology,Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM)makes the course a gateway to success in STEM.Having implemented Calculus 2 Workshops at a mid-size University in the United States,we document key elements of our successful program and use descriptive statistics to analyze the data on passing rates. Our results show that this method of intervention significantly improved our students’passing rate, from 50%to over 70%in two semesters. Not only did the measure help our students’performance in Calculus 2,but it also helped participants to develop an appreciation for group work, cooperative learning, and community building that is based on shared academic and career interests. We provide suggestions for institutions who wish to utilize a similar measure to cure the nagging issue of lackluster performance at the formative stages of their college education.Josaphat Uvah Anthony Okafor Lei Hsin Kuo 2023US-China Education Review(B)2023,13,1:0
