| 1 | Black soldier fly defatted meal as a dietary protein source for broiler chickens:Effects on growth performance,blood traits,gut morphology and histological features显示文摘Background: The present study has evaluated the effects of different inclusion levels of a partially defatted black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens L.; HI) larva meal on the growth performance, blood parameters and gut morphology of broiler chickens. A total of 256 male broiler chickens(Ross 308) were reared from d 1 to d 35 and assigned to4 dietary treatments(8 replicates/treatment and 8 birds/replicate). HI larva meal was included at increasing levels(0, 5%, 10% and 15%; HI0, HI5, HI10 and HI15, respectively) in isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets formulated for 3 feeding phases: starter(1–10 d), growing(10–24 d) and finisher(24–35 d). Two birds per pen were slaughtered at d 35 and morphometric investigations and histopathological alterations were performed.Results: The live weight(LW) showed linear and quadratic responses to increasing HI larva meal(maximum for HI10 group). Average daily gain(ADG) showed a linear and quadratic responses to HI meal(maximum for HI10 group) during starter and growing periods. A linear decrease was observed for ADG during the finisher period. The daily feed intake(DFI) showed a linear and quadratic effect during the starter period(maximum for HI10 group).Linear and quadratic responses were observed for the feed conversion ratio(FCR) in the growing period and for the whole period of the experiment. The FCR showed a linear response in the finisher period(maximum for HI15).No significant effects were observed for the blood and serum parameters, except for the phosphorus concentration,which showed linear and quadratic responses as well as glutathione peroxidase(GPx) activity, the latter of which showed a linear response. The HI15 birds showed a lower villus height, a higher crypt depth and a lower villus height-to-crypt depth ratio than the other groups.Conclusions: Increasing levels of dietary HI meal inclusion in male broiler chickens may improve the LW and DFI during the starter period, but may also negatively affect the FCR and gut morphology, thus suggesting that low levels may be more suitable. | 2 | Anticipating Other Worlds, Animating Our Selves: An Invitation to Comparative Education显示文摘Purpose:This article aims to reimagine education—and our selves—within the context of multiple,more-than-human worlds where everything and everyone are interrelated.Design/Approach/Methods:The aim is achieved by pursuing two speculative thought experiments to connect and bring into conversation seemingly unrelated knowledge systems across space and time—European“paganism”and 13th-century Japanese Buddhism,as well as excerpts from indigenous,ecofeminist,and decolonial scholarship.These thought experiments are conducted through a series of“and if”questions around education and schooling.Findings:The article proposes to radically reimagine education in two ways.First,it invites readers to reconfigure education as a“connective tissue”between different worlds,bringing together rather than hierarchizing them.Second,it proposes to reframe education as an opportunity to learn how to anticipate and animate our ongoing entanglement with more-thanhuman worlds.Originality/Value:Using the concept of“metamorphosis”as an antidote to Western metaphysics,the article re-situates education within a wider set of possibilities in relation to the takenfor-granted ways of knowing and being,as well as the notions of space and time. | Iveta Silova | 2020 | ECNU Review of Education2020,3,1: | 8 |
| 3 | Pilot study on the effects of elevated air temperature and CO2 on artificially defoliated silver birch saplings显示文摘The impacts of elevated temperature and CO_2 on young silver birch(Betula pendula Roth) saplings after 0,25, 50 or 75% artificial defoliation were assessed by measuring plant height and dry mass of aboveground compartments and roots and various morphological and physiological variables. Defoliation either increased or decreased plant growth depending on the severity of damage and the climatic treatment. At 21 °C and400 mg L^(-1) CO_2, defoliated plants were not able to compensate for the lost foliage, but growth compensation and adaptation to the changed conditions were greater; growth of young defoliated silver birch saplings increased, which led to increased height and a tendency to enhance final aboveground and root biomass and leaf nitrogen and carbon content compared to the nondefoliated controls. Nevertheless, the short-term effect of the different climatic conditions did not result in a significant overgrowth of defoliated plants. A slight increase in temperature and CO_2 were the most acceptable conditions for defoliated plants;however, a 4 °C increase with correspondingly higher CO_2 was more stressful as shown by less growth in height and biomass allocation to leaves, stems and roots. | 4 | Species traits and shoot-root biomass allocation in 20 dry-grassland species显示文摘Aims A plant has a limited amount of resources at any time and it allo-cates them to different structures.in spite of the large number of previous studies on allocation patterns within single species,knowledge of general patterns in species allocation is still very limited.This is because each study was done in different condi-tions using different methodology,making generalization dif-ficult.We investigate intraspecific above-versus below-ground biomass allocation among individuals across a spectrum of dry-grassland plant species at two different developmental stages and ask whether allocation is age-and species specific,and whether differences among species can be explained by their life-history traits and phylogeny.Methods We collected data on above-and below-ground biomass of seedlings and adult plants of 20 species from a common garden experiment.We analysed data on shoot-root biomass allocation allometrically and studied the relationship between the allometric exponents(slopes on log-log scale),species life-history traits and phylogenetic distances.Important Findings We found isometric as well as allometric patterns of biomass alloca-tion in the studied species.Seedlings and adult individuals of more than half of the species differed in their above-versus below-ground biomass allometric exponents.Seedlings and adult individuals of the remaining species differed in their allometric coefficients(inter-cepts).Annual species generally allocated proportionally more to above-than below-ground biomass as seedlings than as adults,whereas perennial species showed the opposite pattern.Plant life-history traits,such as plant life span,age of first flowering,month in which the species begin flowering and specific leaf area were much more important in explaining differences in shoot-root allometry among species than were phylogenetic relationships.This suggests that allocation patterns vary greatly among closely related species but can be predicted based on species life-history traits. | Iveta Husáková Jacob Weiner Zuzana Münzbergová | 2018 | Journal of Plant Ecology2018,11,2: | 2 |
