| 1 | Comparison of the effects of bevacizumab and ranibizumab injection on corneal angiogenesis in an alkali burn induced model显示文摘·AIM:To investigate the effects of bevacizumab and ranibizumab on corneal neovascularization in an alkali burn-induced model of corneal angiogenesis. ·METHODS:Fifteen Wistar-Albino rats were divided randomly into 3 groups after chemical cauterization of the cornea. The first group received a single dose of 0.1mL saline solution as a control group whereas second and third groups received a single dose of 2.5mg bevacizumab or 1mg ranibizumab by subconjunctival injection, respectively. After three weeks, the rat corneas were evaluated by biomicroscopy and corneal photographs were taken. The percentage of neovascularization area, length of the longest new vessel, corneal oedema and corneal opacity scores were assessed. ·RESULTS:The analysis of digital photographs showed that the percentage of neovascularization area to the total corneal area, the length of the longest new vessel, corneal oedema and opacity scores were significantly lower in both study groups compared to the control group (P <0.05). Additionally, the percentage of corneal neovascularization area, the length of the longest new vessel and corneal opacity score were less with bevacizumab than ranibizumab. ·CONCLUSION:Subconjunctival bevacizumab and ranibizumab treatments may be effective methods in reducing corneal neovascularization. | 2 | Ursodeoxycholic acid treatment improves hepatocyte ultrastructure in rat liver fibrosis显示文摘AIM: To examine the ultrastructural changes after ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) treatment in hepatocytes from experimentally induced fibrotic livers.METHODS: Liver fibrosis was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats with CCl4 for 12 wk, and the rats were divided into two groups. Group I was treated with saline and group Ⅱ with UDCA (25 mg/kg per day) for 4 wk. All the rats were killed at wk 16. Mitochondria, nuclei, rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) of hepatocytes were evaluated according to a scoring system.RESULTS: Mitochondria, nuclei, RER and SER injury scores in group Ⅱ were significantly lower than those in groupⅠ(P < 0.001). | 3 | Assessment of the correlation between serum prolidase and alpha-fetoprotein levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To determine the predictive value of increased prolidase activity that reflects increased collagen turnover in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with HCC(mean age of 69.1 ± 10.1), 31 cirrhosis patients(mean age of59.3 ± 6.3) and 33 healthy volunteers(mean age of51.4 ± 12.6) were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to evaluate the association of serum α-fetoprotein(AFP) values with HCC clinicopathological features, such as tumor size,number and presence of vascular and macrovascular invasion. The patients with HCC were divided into groups according to tumor size, number and presence of vascular invasion(diameters; ≤ 3 cm, 3-5 cmand ≥ 5 cm, number; 1, 2 and ≥ 3, macrovascular invasion; yes/no). Barcelona-clinic liver cancer(BCLC)criteria were used to stage HCC patients. Serum samples for measurement of prolidase and alphafetoprotein levels were kept at-80 ℃ until use.Prolidase levels were measured spectrophotometrically and AFP concentrations were determined by a chemiluminescence immunometric commercial diagnostic assay.RESULTS: In patients with HCC, prolidase and AFP values were evaluated according to tumor size, number,presence of macrovascular invasion and BCLC staging classification. Prolidase values were significantly higher in patients with HCC compared with controls(P <0.001). Prolidase levels were significantly associated with tumor size and number(P < 0.001, P = 0.002,respectively). Prolidase levels also differed in patients in terms of BCLC staging classification(P < 0.001).Furthermore the prolidase levels in HCC patients showed a significant difference compared with patients with cirrhosis(P < 0.001). In HCC patients grouped according to tumor size, number and BCLC staging classification, AFP values differed separately(P = 0.032,P = 0.038, P = 0.015, respectively). | 4 | Pegylated interferon-alpha plus taurine in treatment of rat liver fibrosis显示文摘AIM: To investigate the antif ibrotic effects of peginterferon- alpha 2b and taurine on oxidative stress markers and hepatocellular apoptosis. METHODS: Sixty rats with CCl4-induced liver fibrosis were divided into 4 groups (n = 15). Group 1 was left for spontaneous recovery (SR). Groups 2-4 received peginterferon-alpha 2b, taurine, and their combination, respectively, for four weeks. Histological f ibrosis scores, histomorphometric analysis, tissue hydroxyproline, tissue MDA, GPx and SOD activities were determined. Activated stellate cells and hepatocellular apoptosis were also evaluated. RESULTS: The degree of f ibrosis decreased in all treatment groups compared to spontaneous recovery group. Taurine alone and in combination with peginterferon-alpha 2b reduced oxidative stress markers, but peginterferon-alpha 2b alone did not. Apoptotic hepatocytes and activated stellate cells were higher in groups 2-4 than in group 1. Combined taurine and peginterferon-alpha 2b further reduced fibrosis and increased activated stellate cell apoptosis, but could not improve oxidative stress more than taurine alone.CONCLUSION: Peginterferon-alpha 2b exerts anti- f ibrotic effects on rat liver fibrosis. It seems ineffective against oxidative stress in vivo. | 8 | Artificial neural network models predicting the leaf area index:a case study in pure even-aged Crimean pine forests from Turkey显示文摘Background: Leaf Area Index(LAI) is an important parameter used in monitoring and modeling of forest ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate performance of the artificial neural network(ANN) models to predict the LAI by comparing the regression analysis models as the classical method in these pure and even-aged Crimean pine forest stands.Methods: One hundred eight temporary sample plots were collected from Crimean pine forest stands to estimate stand parameters. Each sample plot was imaged with hemispherical photographs to detect the LAI. The partial correlation analysis was used to assess the relationships between the stand LAI values and stand parameters, and the multivariate linear regression analysis was used to predict the LAI from stand parameters. Different artificial neural network models comprising different number of neuron and transfer functions were trained and used to predict the LAI of forest stands.Results: The correlation coefficients between LAI and stand parameters(stand number of trees, basal area, the quadratic mean diameter, stand density and stand age) were significant at the level of 0.01. The stand age, number of trees, site index, and basal area were independent parameters in the most successful regression model predicted LAI values using stand parameters(/?;adj = 0.5431). As corresponding method to predict the interactions between the stand LAI values and stand parameters, the neural network architecture based on the RBF 4-19-1 with Gaussian activation function in hidden layer and the identity activation function in output layer performed better in predicting LAI(SSE(12.1040), MSE(0.1223), RM5 E(0.3497), AIC(0.1040), BIC(-777310) and R2(0.6392)) compared to the other studied techniques.Conclusion: The ANN outperformed the multivariate regression techniques in predicting LAI from stand parameters. | 9 | Ultrastructural changes in hepatocytes after taurinetreatment in CCl_4 induced liver injury显示文摘AIM: To search the organelle based changes in hepatocytes after taurine treatment in experimental liver fi brosis induced by CCl_4 administration. METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 15) was injected with CCl_4 plus taurine and Group 2 (n = 15) with CCl_4 plus saline for 12 wk. At the end of 12th wk, mitochondria, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and nuclei of hepatocytes were evaluated using a scoring system. The results were compared with histopathological f indings, as well. RESULTS: Taurine treatment reduced fi brosis scores signifi cantly as compared to placebo. Organelle injury scores decreased signifi cantly with taurine treatment. Ultrastructural and histopathological scores in both groups were in strong correlation (r = 0.931 for CCl_4 plus taurine and r = 0.899 for CCl_4 plus saline group). | 10 | Weak Vertical Diffusion Allows Maintenance of Cold Halocline in the Central Arctic显示文摘In spring preceding the record minimum summer ice cover detailed microstructure measurements were made from drifting pack ice in the Arctic Ocean, 110 km from the North Pole. Profiles of hydrography, shear, and temperature microstructure collected in the upper water column covering the core of the Atlantic Water are analyzed to determine the diapycnal eddy diffusivity, the eddy diffusivity for heat, and the turbulent flux of heat. Turbulence in the bulk of the cold halocline layer was not strong enough to generate significant buoyancy flux and mixing. Resulting turbulent heat flux across the upper cold halocline was not significantly different than zero. | 11 | Innovative deep learning artificial intelligence applications for predicting relationships between individual tree height and diameter at breast height显示文摘Background:Deep Learning Algorithms(DLA)have become prominent as an application of Artificial Intelligence(Al)Techniques since 2010.This paper introduces the DLA to predict the relationships between individual tree height(ITH)and the diameter at breast height(DBH).Methods:A set of 2024 pairs of individual height and diameter at breast height measurements,originating from 150 sample plots located in stands of even aged and pure Anatolian Crimean Pine(Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold ssp.pallasiana(Lamb.)Holmboe)in Konya Forest Enterprise.The present study primarily investigated the capability and usability of DLA models for predicting the relationships between the ITH and the DBH sampled from some stands with different growth structures.The 80 different DLA models,which involve different the alternatives for the numbers of hidden layers and neuron,have been trained and compared to determine optimum and best predictive DLAs network structure.Results:It was determined that the DLA model with 9 layers and 100 neurons has been the best predictive network model compared as those by other different DLA,Artificial Neural Network,Nonlinear Regression and Nonlinear Mixed Effect models.The alternative of 100#neurons and 9#hidden layers in deep learning algorithms resulted in best predictive ITH values with root mean squared error(RMSE,0.5575),percent of the root mean squared error(RMSE%,4.9504%),Akaike information criterion(AIC,-998.9540),Bayesian information criterion(BIC,884.6591),fit index(Fl,0.9436),average absolute error(AAE,0.4077),maximum absolute error(max.AE,2.5106),Bias(0.0057)and percent Bias(Bias%,0.0502%).In addition,these predictive results with DLAs were further validated by the Equivalence tests that showed the DLA models successfully predicted the tree height in the independent dataset.Conclusion:This study has emphasized the capability of the DLA models,novel artificial intelligence technique,for predicting the relationships between individual tree height and the diameter at breast height that can be required information for the management of forests. | ilker Ercanli | 2020 | Forest Ecosystems2020,7,2: | 3 |

The patients were divided into three groups: the first group entailed PEX syndrome patients, while the second group consisted of patients with PEG and the third group involved patients with no additional systemic diseases,other than the diagnosis of cataract as control. Total oxidative stress(TOS), total antioxidant capacity(TAC),PON, and ARE levels in aqueous humor and serum were measured.·RESULTS: TAC, PON and arylesterase levels in aqueous humor and serum of the PEX syndrome and PEG patients were significantly decreased compared with control group(P <0.05). TOS values were higher in patients with PEX syndrome and PEG than controls(P <0.05). TAC, PON and ARE levels of aqueous humor did not differ significantly between the PEX syndrome and PEG groups·CONCLUSION: These findings are potentially of significance and add to the growing body of evidence for oxidative stress in PEX syndrome and PEG. | 17 | Effects of long term hydrophilic bile acid therapy on in vitro contraction of gallbladder muscle strips in patients with cholesterol gallstones显示文摘AIM:To evaluate ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy on the in vitro contraction of gallbladder smooth muscle strips from cholesterol gallstone patients. METHODS:The contraction forces of gallbladder smooth muscle strips from 28 patients with cholesterol gallstones treated with UDCA were compared with contraction forces from 14 untreated patients. The strips were stimulated with increasing concentrations of cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8). RESULTS:Although the contraction forces that developed in response to CCK-8 were higher in strips from specimens of UDCA treated patients compared to untreated patients,longer treatment periods (6-wk) caused more contraction responses than the short treatment period of 3-wk (F = 19.297,1.85 ± 0.22 g vs 1.70 ± 0.10 g,P < 0.01). Contraction forces developed with maximal stimulation with KCl in the 6-wk treatment group were also higher than contraction forces in the untreated group (F = 4.274,3.77 ± 0.45 g vs 3.30 ± 0.30 g,P < 0.05). CONCLUSION:Six-week UDCA treatment caused an increase in contractions of muscle strips from patients with cholesterol gallstones when compared to shorter treatment administration or controls. | 19 | Effect of latanoprost/timolol and dorzolamide/tiomolol on intraocular pressure after phacoemulsification surgery显示文摘·AIM:To evalaute the effect of fixed-combination latanoprost 0.005%/timolol maleate 0.5% and dorzolamide hydrochloride 2%/timolol maleate 0.5% on postoperative intraocular pressure after phacoemulsification cataract surgery.·METHODS:This study is a prospective,randomized,double-masked and placebo-controlled.The study included 90 eyes of 90 patients which were scheduled to have phacoemulsification surgery.Patients were randomly assigned preoperatively to 1 of 3 groups (30 eyes of 30 patients).Two hour before surgery,the patients received one drop latanoprost/timolol (group 1),dorzolamide/timolol (group 2) and placebo (group 3,control group).The IOPs were measured at preoperative and postoperative 4,8,and 24 hours.·RESULTS:The preoperative mean intraocular pressure was not statistically significant between both drug groups and control group.In group 1 and 2,the postoperative mean IOP [group1:(14.03?à3.15)mmHg and group 2:(14.16?à4.43)mmHg] at 24 hours were significantly lower than the control group [(16.93?à3.70)mmHg,(P <0.05)].In addition,the postoperative mean IOP of group 1 [(14.90±3.69)mmHg] at 8 hours was significantly lower than the control group [(17.70?à3.89)mmHg,(P <0.05)],but there was no significant difference between group 2 [(16.16?à5.23)mmHg] and control group at 8 hours (P >0.05).·CONCLUSION:When compared with placebo,the use of preoperative fixed combination of latanoprost/timolol and dorzolamide/timolol is an effective method for preventing intraocular pressure elevation in 24 hours after phacoemulsification surgery,but did not completely prevent IOP spikes.· | Haydar Erdogan Ayse Vural Ozec Cengiz Caner Mustafa Ilker Toker Mustafa Kemal Arici Aysen Topalkara | 2011 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2011,4,2: | 1 |
