1Characteristics of and risk factors for colorectal neoplasms in young adults in a screening population显示文摘AIM: To investigate prevalence and risk factors for colorectal neoplasms in adults aged < 50 years, for whom screening is not recommended.METHODS: This cross-sectional study compared prevalence and characteristics of colorectal and advanced adenomas in patients aged < 50 years who underwent colonoscopy screening with subjects aged ≥ 50 years. To evaluate risk factors for colorectal and advanced adenoma in young adults, we used multivariable logistic regression models. Colorectal neoplasm characteristics were evaluated and compared with those in older patients.RESULTS: Among 2819 patients included, prevalences of colorectal adenoma and advanced adenoma were 19.7% and 1.5%, respectively. As patient age increased, so did the prevalence of colorectal neoplasm. However, prevalence of advanced adenoma did not differ between age-groups 45-49 years and ≥ 50 years(OR = 0.43, 95%CI: 0.17-1.07, P = 0.070). In younger age-group(< 50 years), colorectal adenoma was significantly associated with older age, waist circumference(OR = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.15-2.55, P = 0.008), and current smoking(OR = 1.60, 95%CI: 1.07-2.41, P = 0.023). Alcohol consumption was an independent risk factor for colorectal advanced adenoma(OR = 3.69, 95%CI: 1.08-12.54, P = 0.037). Multiple neoplasms and large neoplasms(≥ 1 cm) were more prevalent in subjects ≥ 50 years.CONCLUSION: Current screening strategies for colorectal cancer may need to be amended to account for patient age, especially in young subjects with abdominal obesity, current smoking and alcohol consumption.Seung Eun Lee Hee Bum Jo Won Gun Kwack Yun Jin Jeong Yeo-Jin Yoon Hyoun Woo Kang 2016World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,10:8
2Clinical and endoscopic characteristics of drug-induced esophagitis显示文摘AIM: To investigate clinical, endoscopic and pathological characteristics of drug-induced esophagitis.METHODS: Data for patients diagnosed with drug-induced esophagitis from April 2002 to May 2013 was reviewed. Patients diagnosed with malignancy, viral or fungal esophagitis were excluded. Clinical, endoscopic and pathological characteristics of patients diagnosed with drug-induced esophagitis were analyzed.RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients were diagnosed with drug-induced esophagitis. Their mean age was 43.9 ± 18.9 years and 35.9% were male. Common symptoms were chest pain(71.8%), odynophagia(38.5%) and dysphagia(29.5%). The endoscopic location was in the middle third of esophagus in 78.2%. Endoscopic findings were ulcer(82.1%), erosion(17.9%), ulcer with bleeding(24.4%), coating with drug material(5.1%), impacted pill fragments(3.8%) and stricture(2.6%). Kissing ulcers were observed in 43.6%. The main causative agents were antibiotics and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs. All the patients were treated with proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) or sucralfate, and the causative drugs were discontinued. Nineteen patients with drug-induced esophagitis were followed up with endoscopy and revealed normal findings, scars or healing ulcers.CONCLUSION: Drug-induced esophagitis mainly presents as chest pain, odynophagia and dysphagia, and may be successfully treated with PPIs and discontinuation of the causative drug. 3Design,Fabrication,and Analysis of Flapping and Folding Wing Mechanism for a Robotic Bird显示文摘Emulating periodic main wing movement of a bird for generating lift and thrust remains a significant challenge in developing a robotic bird.The sequences of main wing motion are comprised of flapping,folding,bending,and twisting.In this paper,we concentrate on the flapping and folding motion,and design two wing mechanisms based on a 4-bar linkage structure:one is only for Flapping Motion(FM)and the other is for simultaneous Flapping and Folding Motion(FFM)during a wing stroke.We derive relationships between length and angle of links to analyze kinematic characteristics of the mechanisms and conduct an optimization to select the length parameters of links that allow maximization of the flapping angle.We run a simulation to confirm the performance of the optimized parameters by examining physical properties,and fabricate two wing mechanisms accordingly.In particular,the folding motion is achieved without using an additional actuator.Force measurements to investigate a lift profile of each mechanism and their quantitative comparison of the performance of both types confirm the benefits of the folding motion in the perspectives of wing frequency and lift.We expect that our kinematic formulation,design procedures,and comparative measurement results can help develop a wing mechanism to create a truly biomimetic robotic bird.Seung Wan Ryu Jong Gu Lee Hyoun Jin Kim 2020Journal of Bionic Engineering2020,17,2:4
4Effect of Temperature and Gamma-Ray Irradiation on Optical Characteristics of Fiber Bragg Grating Inscribed Radiation-Resistant Optical Fiber显示文摘A new radiation-hard germano-silicate glass optical fiber with a pure silica glass buffer and a boron-doped silica glass inner cladding was fabricated for temperature sensor application based on the fiber Bragg grating(FBG)underg-ray irradiation environment.The temperature dependences of optical attenuation at 1550.5 nm and Bragg reflection wavelength shift from 18℃to 40℃before theγ-ray irradiation were about 4.57´10^(-4)dB/℃and 5.48 pm/℃,respectively.The radiation-induced optical attenuation at 1550.5 nm and the radiation-induced Bragg reflection wavelength shift under theγ-ray irradiation with the total dose of 22.85 kGy at 35℃were about 0.03 dB/m and 0.12 nm,respectively,with theγ-ray irradiation sensitivity of 5.25´10^(-3)pm/Gy.The temperature and theγ-ray irradiation dependence of optical attenuation at 1550.5 nm in the FBG written fiber with boron-doped silica glass inner cladding were about 6 times and 4 times lower than that in the FBG written fiber without boron-doped silica glass inner cladding under a temperature change from 18℃to 40℃and theγ-ray irradiation with the total dose of 22.85 kGy at 35℃,respectively.Furthermore,the effect of temperature increase on the Bragg reflection wavelength of the FBG written fiber with boron-doped silica inner cladding was much larger about 1000 times than that of theγ-ray irradiation.However,no influence on the reflection power of the Bragg wavelengths and the full width at half maximum(FWHM)bandwidth under temperature and theγ-ray irradiation change was found.Also,after theγ-ray irradiation with the dose of 22.85 kGy,no significant change in the refractive index was found but the residual stresses developed in the fiber were slightly relaxed or retained.Seongmin JU Youngwoong KIM Kadathala LINGANNA Yune Hyoun KIM Won-Taek HAN 2020Photonic Sensors2020,10,1:2
5Genetic diversity for mycorrhizal symbiosis and phosphate transporters in rice显示文摘Phosphorus(P) is a major plant nutrient and developing crops with higher P-use efficiency is an important breeding goal.In this context we have conducted a comparative study of irrigated and rainfed rice varieties to assess genotypic differences in colonization with arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM) fungi and expression of different P transporter genes.Plants were grown in three different soil samples from a rice farm in the Philippines.The data show that AM symbiosis in all varieties was established after 4 weeks of growth under aerobic conditions and that,in soil derived from a rice paddy,natural AM populations recovered within6 weeks.The analysis of AM marker genes(AM1,AM3,AM14) and P transporter genes for the direct Pi uptake(PT2,PT6) and AM-mediated pathway(PT11,PT13) were largely in agreement with the observed root AM colonization providing a useful tool for diversity studies.Interestingly,delayed AM colonization was observed in the aus-type rice varieties which might be due to their different root structure and might confer an advantage for weed competition in the field.The data further showed that P-starvation induced root growth and expression of the high-affinity P transporter PT6 was highest in the irrigated variety IR66 which also maintained grain yield under P-deficient field conditions.Kwanho Jeong Nicolas Mattes Sheryl Catausan Joong Hyoun Chin Uta Paszkowski Sigrid Heuer 2015Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2015,57,11:2
