| 1 | An Overview of Self-piercing Riveting Process with Focus on Joint Failures, Corrosion Issues and Optimisation Techniques显示文摘Self-piercing riveting(SPR)is a cold forming technique used to fasten together two or more sheets of materials with a rivet without the need to predrill a hole. The application of SPR in the automotive sector has become increasingly popular mainly due to the growing use of lightweight materials in transportation applications. However,SPR joining of these advanced light materials remains a challenge as these materials often lack a good combination of high strength and ductility to resist the large plastic deformation induced by the SPR process. In this paper,SPR joints of advanced materials and their corresponding failure mechanisms are discussed, aiming to provide the foundation for future improvement of SPR joint quality. This paper is divided into three major sections:1)joint failures focusing on joint defects originated from the SPR process and joint failure modes under different mechanical loading conditions,2)joint corrosion issues, and 3)joint optimisation via process parameters and advanced techniques. | Hua Qian Ang | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2021,34,1: | 4 |
| 2 | Re-evaluation of the mechanical properties and creep resistance of commercial magnesium die-casting alloy AE44显示文摘This paper presents a re-evaluation of the room temperature mechanical properties and high temperature creep resistance of magnesium die-casting alloy AE44(Mg-4Al-4RE)in light of the influence of minor Mn addition. It is shown that the Mn-containing AE44 exhibits distinct age hardening response upon direct ageing(T5)due to the precipitation of nanoscale Al-Mn particles,as reported previously in a similar alloy. The T5 ageing leads to a significant improvement in strength with similar ductility.Consequently, the T5-aged AE44 has a remarkably better strength-ductility combination than most Mg die-casting alloys and even the Al die-casting alloy A380.Minor Mn addition is also shown to be critical for the creep resistance of AE44 whereas the influence of the RE constituent is not as significant as previously thought, which reaffirms that precipitation hardening of theα-Mg matrix is more important than grain boundary reinforcement by intermetallic phases for the creep resistance of die-cast Mg alloys. The findings in this work could provide new application perspectives for AE44,particularly in the automotive industry. | Suming Zhu Trevor B.Abbott Jian-Feng Nie Hua Qian Ang Dong Qiu Kazuhiro Nogita Mark A.Easton | 2021 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,5: | 2 |
| 3 | Influence of laser parameters on the microstructures and surface properties in laser surface modification of biomedical magnesium alloys显示文摘Biodegradable implants from magnesium(Mg)alloys have emerged in the biomedical field especially in the orthopedic and cardiovascular stent applications owing to their low density, high specific strength, excellent machinability, good biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The primary shortcoming of Mg-based implants is their low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment, which results in premature mechanical integrity loss before adequate healing and the production of excessive hydrogen gas, which is harmful to the body tissues and negatively affects the biocompatibility of the implant.Laser surface modification has recently received attention because it can improve the surface properties such as surface chemistry, roughness, topography, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, hydrophilicity, and thus cell response to the surface of the material. The composition and microstructures including textures and phases of laser-treated surfaces depend largely on the laser processing parameters(input laser power, laser scan velocity, frequency, pulse duration, pressure, gas circulation, working time, spot size, beam focal position, and laser track overlap)and the thermophysical properties of the substrate(solubility, melting point, and boiling point). This review investigates the impacts of various laser surface modification techniques including laser surface melting, laser surface alloying, laser cladding, laser surface texturing, and laser shock peening, and highlights their significance in improving the surface properties of biodegradable Mg alloys for implant applications.Additionally,we explore how different laser process parameters affect its composition, microstructure, and surface properties in each laser surface modification technique. | Chee Ying Tan Cuie Wen Hua Qian Ang | 2024 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2024,12,1: | 0 |
