Hair regrowth following fecal microbiota transplantation in an elderly patient with alopecia areata: A case report and review of the literature显示文摘BACKGROUND Alopecia areata is a hair loss disease associated with genetics, autoimmunity, and other factors. There is an intriguing link between alopecia areata and gut dysbiosis.Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)has been recommended to treat Clostridium difficile(previously known as Clostridioides difficile)infection, and has also shown potentials in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and non-alcohol fatty liver disease.CASE SUMMARY An 86-year-old man, with a history of sigmoid colon carcinoma, suffered from recurrent abdominal pain and distension, and diarrhea for six months, with inappetence. At admission,he was also diagnosed with depression.Upon physical examination, the patient presented with a 1.5 cm×2.0 cm alopecia areata on his right occiput.Due to the negative results of laboratory testing, capsule endoscopy, and colonoscopy, the patient was diagnosed with noninfectious diarrhea, depressive disorder, and patchy alopecia areata.Considering that noninfectious diarrhea in the elderly patient was mainly caused by gut dysbiosis,he was given six rounds of FMT.His diarrhea improved remarkably one month after FMT,with improved appetite and disappearance of abdominal pain, distension, and depressive symptoms.Surprisingly,he reported new hair growth on the affected region of his scalp, with some of his white hair gradually turning to black, without taking any other therapies for alopecia areata before and after FMT.CONCLUSION FMT might act as a potential therapy for patients who suffer from alopecia areata.Large and well-designed studies are required to confirm the role of FMT in alopecia areata. | Wen-Rui Xie Xiao-Ya Yang Harry Hua-Xiang Xia Li-Hao Wu Xing-Xiang He | 2019 | World Journal of Clinical Cases2019,7,19: | 13
Investigation of free amino acid, total phenolics, antioxidant activity and purine alkaloids to assess the health properties of non-Camellia tea显示文摘To find novel functional beverages from folk teas, 33 species of frequently used non-Camellia tea(plants other than Camellia) were collected and compared with Camellia tea(green tea, pu-erh tea and black tea) for the first time. Data are reported here on the quantities of 20 free amino acids(FAAs) and three purine alkaloids(measured by UHPLC), total polyphenols(measured by Folin-Ciocalteu assay), and antioxidant activity(DPPH). The total amounts of FAAs in non-Camellia tea(0.62–18.99 mg/g) are generally less than that of Camellia tea(16.55–24.99 mg/g). However, for certain FAAs, the quantities were much higher in some non-Camellia teas, such as γ-aminobutyric acid in teas from Ampelopsis grossedentata, Isodon serra and Hibiscus sabdariffa. Interestingly, theanine was detected in tea from Potentilla fruticosa(1.16±0.81 mg/g). Furthermore, the content of polyphenols in teas from A. grossedentata, Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala are significantly higher than those from Camellia tea;teas from I. serra, Pistacia chinensis and A. tataricum subsp. ginnala have remarkable antioxidant activities similar to the activities from green tea(44.23 μg/m L). Purine alkaloids(caffeine, theobromine and theophylline) were not detected in non-Camellia teas. The investigation suggest some non-Camellia teas may be great functional natural products with potential for prevention of chronic diseases and aging,by providing with abundant polyphenols, antioxidants and specific FAAs. | Wu Bi Chunnian He Yunyun Ma Jie Shen Linghua Harris Zhang Yong Peng Peigen Xiao | 2016 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2016,6,2: | 11
Washed microbiota transplantation reduces proton pump inhibitor dependency in nonerosive reflux disease显示文摘BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)is closely associated with the intestinal bacteria composition and their metabolites.AIM To investigate whether washed microbiota transplantation(WMT)improves symptoms of nonerosive reflux disease(NERD)with proton pump inhibitor(PPI)dependency.METHODS Patients with recurrent NERD and PPI dependency at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University from 2017 to 2018 were included and divided into a WMT or PPI group treated with PPI with/without WMT.The endpoint was NERD symptom frequency evaluated 1 mo after WMT using reflux disease questionnaire(RDQ)and GERD questionnaire(GERDQ)scores, remission time,PPI dose, and the examination of intestinal mucosal barrier function.RESULTS In the WMT(n=15)and PPI(n=12)groups,the total remission rate at 1 mo after treatment was 93.3%vs 41.7%.Compared with the PPI group, the WMT group showed better results in GERDQ(P=0.004)and RDQ(P=0.003)and in remission months(8 vs 2,P=0.002).The PPI dose was reduced to some extent for 80%of patients in the WMT group and 33.3%in the PPI group. In 24 patients, intestinal mucosal barrier function was examined before treatment, and changes in the degree of damage were observed in 13 of these patients after treatment.Only one of the 15 patients had minor side effects, including a mushy stool two or three times a day, which resolved on their own after 1 wk.CONCLUSION This study is the first to demonstrate that WMT may be safe and effective for relieving NERD symptoms and reducing PPI dependency and recurrence. | Ya-Mei Zheng Xian-Yun Chen Jie-Yi Cai Yu Yuan Wen-Rui Xie Jia-Ting Xu Harry Hua-Xiang Xia Min Zhang Xing-Xiang He Li-Hao Wu | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,6: | 7
Evolution of permafrost in China during the last 20 ka显示文摘The formation and evolution of permafrost in China during the last 20 ka were reconstructed on the basis of large amount of paleo-permafrost remains and paleo-periglacial evidence, as well as paleo-glacial landforms, paleo-flora and paleofauna records. The results indicate that, during the local Last Glacial Maximum(LLGM) or local Last Permafrost Maximum(LLPMax), the extent of permafrost of China reached 5.3×106-5.4×106 km2, or thrice that of today, but permafrost shrank to only0.80×106-0.85×106 km2, or 50% that of present, during the local Holocene Megathermal Period(LHMP), or the local Last Permafrost Minimum(LLPMin). On the basis of the dating of periglacial remains and their distributive features, the extent of permafrost in China was delineated for the two periods of LLGM(LLPMax) and LHMP(LLPMin), and the evolution of permafrost in China was divided into seven periods as follows:(1) LLGM in Late Pleistocene(ca. 20000 to 13000-10800 a BP)with extensive evidence for the presence of intensive ice-wedge expansion for outlining its LLPMax extent;(2) A period of dramatically changing climate during the early Holocene(10800 to 8500-7000 a BP) when permafrost remained relatively stable but with a general trend of shrinking areal extent;(3) The LHMP in the Mid-Holocene(8500-7000 to 4000-3000 a BP)when permafrost degraded intensively and extensively, and shrank to the LLPMin;(4) Neoglaciation during the late Holocene(4000-3000 to 1000 a BP, when permafrost again expanded;(5) Medieval Warming Period(MWP) in the late Holocene(1000-500 a BP) when permafrost was in a relative decline;(6) Little Ice Age(LIA) in the late Holocene(500-100 a BP), when permafrost relatively expanded, and;(7) Recent warming(during the 20 th century), when permafrost continuously degraded and still is degrading. The paleo-climate, geography and paleopermafrost extents and other features were reconstructed for each of these seven periods. | Huijun JIN Xiaoying JIN Ruixia HE Dongliang LUO Xiaoli CHANG Shaoling WANG Sergey S MARCHENKO Sizhong YANG Chaolu YI Shijie LI Stuart A HARRIS | 2019 | Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,8: | 6
Inferring the Tree of Life of the order Cypriniformes, the earth's most diverse clade of freshwater fishes: Implications of varied taxon and character sampling显示文摘The phylogenetic relationships of species are fundamental to any biological investigation, including all evolutionary studies. Accurate inferences of sister group relationships provide the researcher with an historical framework within which the attributes or geographic origin of species (or supraspecific groups) evolved. Taken out of this phylogenetic context, interpretations of evolutionary processes or origins, geographic distributions, or speciation rates and mechanisms, are subject to nothing less than a biological experiment without controls. Cypriniformes is the most diverse clade of freshwater fishes with estimates of diversity of nearly 3,500 species. These fishes display an amazing array of morphological, ecological, behavioral, and geographic diversity and offer a tremendous opportunity to enhance our understanding of the biotic and abiotic factors associated with diversification and adaptation to environments. Given the nearly global distribution of these fishes, they serve as an important model group for a plethora of biological investigations, including indicator species for future cli-matic changes. The occurrence of the zebrafish, Danio rerio, in this order makes this clade a critical component in understanding and predicting the relationship between mutagenesis and phenotypic expressions in vertebrates, including humans. With the tremendous diversity in Cypriniformes, our understanding of their phylogenetic relationships has not proceeded at an acceptable rate, despite a plethora of morphological and more recent mo-lecular studies. Most studies are pre-Hennigian in origin or include relatively small numbers of taxa. Given that analyses of small numbers of taxa for molecular characters can be compromised by peculiarities of long-branch attraction and nodal-density effect, it is critical that significant progress in our understanding of the relationships of these important fishes occurs with increasing sampling of species to mitigate these potential problems. The recent Cypriniformes Tree of Life initiative is an effort to achieve this goal with morphological and molecular (mitochondrial and nuclear) data. In this early synthesis of our understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of these fishes, all types of data have contributed historically to improving our understanding, but not all analyses are complementary in taxon sampling, thus precluding direct understanding of the impact of taxon sampling on achieving accurate phylogenetic inferences. However, recent molecular studies do provide some insight and in some instances taxon sampling can be implicated as a variable that can influence sister group relationships. Other instances may also exist but without inclusion of more taxa for both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, one cannot distinguish between inferences being dictated by taxon sampling or the origins of the molecular data. | Richard L. | 6 | Efficacy and Safety of Washed Microbiota Transplantation to Treat Patients with Mild-to-Severe COVID-19 and Suspected of Having Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial显示文摘Objective:Coronavirus disease 2019(COVTD-19)is often accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms, which are related to gut microbiota dysbiosis(GMD).Whether washed microbiota transplantation(WMT)is an effective treatment for COV1D-19 patients suspected of having GMD by restoring the gut microbiota is unknown. This study is designed to explore the efficacy and safety of WMT in COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD.Methods:This is a randomized,multicenter,single-blind prospective study.COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD will be randomly divided to receive routine treatment only or to receive routine treatment and WMT.The frequency of WMT will be once a day for three consecutive days.Laboratory and imaging examinations will be performed at admission,1 and 2 weeks after treatment, and on the day of discharge. Then a telephone follow-up will be conducted at 1st week,2nd week, and 6th month after discharge. The clinical efficacy and safety of WMT in COVD-19 patients suspected of having GMD and the effects of WMT on the organ function, homeostasis, inflammatory response, intestinal mucosal barrier function, and immunity of the patients will be evaluated. Results:By following the proposed protocol,WMT is expected to be efficacious and safe for the treatment of COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD,and the therapeutic effect is expected to be associated with improvement of the intestinal mucosal barrier function, inflammatory response, and immunity. Conclusion:The findings from this study may offer a new approach for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD. | Li-hao WU Zhi-ning YE Ping PENG Wen-rui XIE Jia-ting XU Xue-yuan ZHANG Harry Hua-xiang XIA Xing-xiang HE | 2021 | Current Medical Science2021,41,6: | 3
Nonlinear optical absorption properties of InP nanowires and applications as a saturable absorber显示文摘Indium phosphide(InP)nanowires(NWs)have attracted significant attention due to their exotic properties that are different from the bulk counterparts, and have been widely used for light generation, amplification, detection, modulation, and switching,etc.Here,high-quality InP NWs were directly grown on a quartz substrate by the Au-nanoparticle assisted vapor-liquid-solid method. We thoroughly studied their nonlinear optical absorption properties at 1.06μm by the open-aperture Z-scan method.Interestingly,a transition phenomenon from satu-rable absorption(SA)to reverse saturable absorption(RSA)was observed with the increase of the incident laser intensity. In the analysis,we found that the effective nonlinear absorption cofficient(βeff-10^2 cm/MW)under the SA process was 3 orders of magnitude larger than that during the RSA processes.Furthermore, the SA proper-ties of InP NWs were experimentally verified by using them as a saturable absorber for a passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 solid-state laser at 1.06μm,where the shortest pulse width of 462 ns and largest single pulse energy of 1.32μJ were obtained. Moreover, the ultrafast carrier relaxation dynamics were basically studied, and the intraband and inter-band ultrafast carrier relaxation times of 8.1 and 63.8 ps,respectively, were measured by a degenerate pump-probe method with the probe laser of 800 nm.These results well demonstrate the nonlinear optical absorption properties, which show the excellent light manipulating capabilities of InP NWs and pave a way for their applications in ultrafast nanophotonic devices. | JUNTING LIU HONGKUN NIE BINGZHENG YAN KEJIAN YANG HE YANG VLADISLAV KHAYRUDINOV HARRI LIPSANEN BAITAO ZHANG JINGLIANG HE | 2020 | Photonics Research2020,8,6: | 2
