Generation of arbitrary vector vortex beams on hybrid-order Poincaré sphere显示文摘We propose theoretically and verify experimentally a method of combining a q-plate and a spiral phase plate to generate arbitrary vector vortex beams on a hybrid-order Poincaré sphere. We demonstrate that a vector vortex beam can be decomposed into a vector beam and a vortex, whereby the generation can be realized by sequentially using a q-plate and a spiral phase plate. The generated vector beam, vortex, and vector vortex beam are verified and show good agreement with the prediction. Another advantage that should be pointed out is that the spiral phase plate and q-plate are both fabricated on silica substrates, suggesting the potential possibility to integrate the two structures on a single plate. Based on a compact method of transmissive-type transformation, our scheme may have potential applications in future integrated optical devices.Zhenxing Liu Yuanyuan Liu Yougang Ke Yachao Liu Weixing Shu Hailu Luo Shuangchun Wen 2017Photonics Research2017,5,1:18
Giant photonic spin Hall effect in momentum space in a structured metamaterial with spatially varying birefringence显示文摘The photonic spin Hall effect(SHE)in the reflection and refraction at an interface is very weak because of the weak spin-orbit interaction. Here,we report the observation of a giant photonic SHE in a dielectric-based metamaterial. The metamaterial is structured to create a coordinate-dependent,geometric Pancharatnam–Berry phase that results in an SHE with a spin-dependent splitting in momentum space. It is unlike the SHE that occurs in real space in the reflection and refraction at an interface, which results from the momentum-dependent gradient of the geometric Rytov–Vladimirskii–Berry phase. We theorize a unified description of the photonic SHE based on the two types of geometric phase gradient, and we experimentally measure the giant spin-dependent shift of the beam centroid produced by the metamaterial at a visible wavelength. Our results suggest that the structured metamaterial offers a potential method of manipulating spin-polarized photons and the orbital angular momentum of light and thus enables applications in spin-controlled nanophotonics.Xiaohui Ling Xinxing Zhou Xunong Yi Weixing Shu Yachao Liu Shizhen Chen Hailu Luo Shuangchun Wen Dianyuan Fan 2015Light(Science & Applications)2015,4,1:15
Polarization evolution of vector beams generated by q-plates显示文摘The polarization evolution of vector beams(VBs) generated by q-plates is investigated theoretically and experimentally. An analytical model is developed for the VB created by a general quarter-wave q-plate based on vector diffraction theory. It is found that the polarization distribution of VBs varies with position and the value q.In particular, for the incidence of circular polarization, the exit vector vortex beam has polarization states that cover the whole surface of the Poincarésphere, thereby constituting a full Poincarébeam. For the incidence of linear polarization, the VB is not cylindrical but specularly symmetric, and exhibits an azimuthal spin splitting. These results are in sharp contrast with those derived by the commonly used model,i.e.,regarding the incident light as a plane wave.By implementing q-plates with dielectric metasurfaces, further experiments validate the theoretical results.WEIXING SHU XIAOHUI LING XIQUAN FU YACHAO LIU YOUGANG KE HAILU LUO 2017Photonics Research2017,5,2:7
Two-dimensional optical spatial differentiation and high-contrast imaging显示文摘Optical analog signal processing technology has been widely studied and applied in a variety of science and engineering fields, with the advantages of overcoming the low-speed and high-power consumption associated with its digital counterparts. Much attention has been given to emerging metasurface technology in the field of optical imaging and processing systems. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, broadband two-dimensional spatial differentiation and high-contrast edge imaging based on a dielectric metasurface across the whole visible spectrum. This edge detection method works for both intensity and phase objects simply by inserting the metasurface into a commercial optical microscope. This highly efficient metasurface performing a basic optical differentiation operation opens up new opportunities in applications of fast, compactible and power-efficient ultrathin devices for data processing and biological imaging.Junxiao Zhou Haoliang Qian Junxiang Zhao Min Tang Qianyi Wu Ming Lei Hailu Luo Shuangchun Wen Shaochen Chen Zhaowei Liu 2021National Science Review2021,8,6:6
Pristine PN junction toward atomic layer devices显示文摘In semiconductor manufacturing,PN junction is formed by introducing dopants to activate neighboring electron and hole conductance. To avoid structural distortion and failure,it generally requires the foreign dopants localize in the designated micro-areas.This,however,is challenging due to an inevitable interdiffusion process. Here we report a brand-new junction architecture, called'layer PN junction',that might break through such limit and help redefine the semiconductor device architecture.Different from all existing semiconductors,we find that a variety of van der Waals materials are doping themselves from n-to p-type conductance with an increasing/decreasing layer-number.It means the capability of constructing homogeneous PN junctions in monolayers'dimension/precision,with record high rectification-ratio(>10^(5))and low cut-off current(<1 pA).More importantly,it spawns intriguing functionalities, like gate-switchable-rectification and noise-signal decoupled avalanching.Findings disclosed here might open up a path to develop novel nanodevice applications, where the geometrical size becomes the only critical factor in tuning charge-carrier distribution and thus functionality.Hui Xia Man Luo Wenjing Wang Hailu Wang Tianxin Li Zhen Wang Hangyu Xu Yue Chen Yong Zhou Fang Wang Runzhang Xie Peng Wang Weida Hu Wei Lu 2022Light(Science & Applications)2022,11,7:4
Photonic spin Hall effect on the surface of anisotropic two-dimensional atomic crystals显示文摘We examine the spin-orbit interaction of light and photonic spin Hall effect on the surface of anisotropic two-dimensional atomic crystals. As an example, the photonic spin Hall effect on the surface of black phosphorus is investigated. The photonic spin Hall effect manifests itself as the spin-dependent beam shifts in both transverse and in-plane directions. We demonstrate that the spin-dependent shifts are sensitive to the orientation of the optical axis, doping concentration, and interband transitions. These results can be extensively extended to other anisotropic two-dimensional atomic crystals. By incorporating the quantum weak measurement techniques, the photonic spin Hall effect holds great promise for detecting the parameters of anisotropic two-dimensional atomic crystals.WENSHUAI ZHANG WEIJIE WU SHIZHEN CHEN JIN ZHANG XIAOHUI LING WEIXING SHU HAILU LUO SHUANGCHUN WEN 2018Photonics Research2018,6,6:4
Observation of tiny polarization rotation rate in total internal reflection via weak measurements显示文摘In this paper,we examine the tiny polarization rotation effect in total internal reflection due to the spin–orbit interaction of light. We find that the tiny polarization rotation rate will induce a geometric phase gradient, which can be regarded as the physical origin of photonic spin Hall effect. We demonstrate that the spin-dependent splitting in position space is related to the polarization rotation in momentum space, while the spin-dependent splitting in momentum space is attributed to the polarization rotation in position space.Furthermore,we introduce a quantum weak measurement to determine the tiny polarization rotation rate. The rotation rate in momentum space is obtained with 118 nm,which manifests itself as a spatial shift, and the rotation rate in position space is achieved with 38 μrad∕λ,which manifests itself as an angular shift. The investigation of the polarization rotation characteristics will provide insights into the photonic spin Hall effect and will enable us to better understand the spin–orbit interaction of light.CHENGQUAN MI SHIZHEN CHEN XINXING ZHOU KAI TIAN HAILU LUO SHUANGCHUN WEN 2017Photonics Research2017,5,2:2
Photonic spin Hall effect:fundamentals and emergent applications显示文摘The photonic spin Hall effect(SHE)refers to the transverse spin separation of photons with opposite spin angular momentum, after the beam passes through an optical interface or inhomogeneous medium, manifested as the spin-dependent splitting. It can be considered as an analogue of the SHE in electronic systems:the light’s right-circularly polarized and left-circularly polarized components play the role of the spin-up and spin-down electrons, and the refractive index gradient replaces the electronic potential gradient.Remarkably, the photonic SHE originates from the spin-orbit interaction of the photons and is mainly attributed to two different geometric phases,i.e.,the spin-redirection Rytov-Vlasimirskii-Berry in momentum space and the Pancharatnam-Berry phase in Stokes parameter space. The unique properties of the photonic SHE and its powerful ability to manipulate the photon spin, gradually, make it a useful tool in precision metrology, analog optical computing and quantum imaging, etc. In this review,we provide a brief framework to describe the fundamentals and advances of photonic SHE,and give an overview on the emergent applications of this phenomenon in different scenes.Shuoqing Liu Shizhen Chen Shuangchun Wen Hailu Luo 2022Opto-Electronic Science2022,1,7:2
