2Ultrafast Stretched-Pulse Fiber Laser Mode-Locked by Carbon Nanotubes显示文摘Ultrafast fiber sources having short pulses, broad bandwidth, high energy, and low amplitude fluctuations have widespread applications. Stretched-pulse fiber lasers, incorporating segments of normal and anomalous dispersion fibers, are a preferred means to generate such pulses. 3An Iterative Pose Estimation Algorithm Based on Epipolar Geometry With Application to Multi-Target Tracking显示文摘This paper introduces a new algorithm for estimating the relative pose of a moving camera using consecutive frames of a video sequence. State-of-the-art algorithms for calculating the relative pose between two images use matching features to estimate the essential matrix. The essential matrix is then decomposed into the relative rotation and normalized translation between frames. To be robust to noise and feature match outliers, these methods generate a large number of essential matrix hypotheses from randomly selected minimal subsets of feature pairs, and then score these hypotheses on all feature pairs. Alternatively, the algorithm introduced in this paper calculates relative pose hypotheses by directly optimizing the rotation and normalized translation between frames, rather than calculating the essential matrix and then performing the decomposition. The resulting algorithm improves computation time by an order of magnitude. If an inertial measurement unit(IMU) is available, it is used to seed the optimizer, and in addition, we reuse the best hypothesis at each iteration to seed the optimizer thereby reducing the number of relative pose hypotheses that must be generated and scored. These advantages greatly speed up performance and enable the algorithm to run in real-time on low cost embedded hardware. We show application of our algorithm to visual multi-target tracking(MTT) in the presence of parallax and demonstrate its real-time performance on a 640 × 480 video sequence captured on a UAV. 8Secure optical communication using a quantum alarm显示文摘Optical fibre networks are advancing rapidly to meet growing traffic demands.Security issues,including attack management,have become increasingly important for optical communication networks because of the vulnerabilities associated with tapping light from optical fibre links.Physical layer security often requires restricting access to channels and periodic inspections of link performance.In this paper,we report how quantum communication techniques can be utilized to detect a physical layer attack.We present an efficient method for monitoring the physical layer security of a high-data-rate classical optical communication network using a modulated continuous-variable quantum signal.We describe the theoretical and experimental underpinnings of this monitoring system and the monitoring accuracy for different monitored parameters.We analyse its performance for both unamplified and amplified optical links.The technique represents a novel approach for applying quantum signal processing to practical optical communication networks and compares well with classical monitoring methods.We conclude by discussing the challenges facing its practical application,its differences with respect to existing quantum key distribution methods,and its usage in future secure optical transport network planning.Yupeng Gong Rupesh Kumar Adrian Wonfor Shengjun Ren Richard V.Penty Ian H.White 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:0
9Lophozonia tree cavities used for nesting by Slender-billed Parakeets(Enicognathus leptorhynchus)in the central valley of southern Chile:a potentially vanishing keystone resource显示文摘Background: The Slender-billed Parakeet(Enicognathus leptorhynchus) is a psittacine endemic to southern Chile and an obligate secondary cavity-nester. In the central valley of southern Chile, most(94%) of the known Slender-billed Parakeet nests have occurred in large, mature southern beech(Lophozonia obliqua) trees(locally known as 'pellines'). As relicts of the original old-growth forests of southern Chile, most pellines have been lost due to extensive landclearing throughout the region, potentially threatening long-term persistence of the Slender-billed Parakeet.Methods: We conducted our study in the central valley of southern Chile, near the city of Osorno during three consecutive nesting seasons(November–January, 2008–2011). Nest trees used by Slender-billed Parakeets were located by direct observation of parakeet activities and through interviews with local residents, some of whom were former parrot nest poachers. Nest cavities were accessed, inspected and measured using single-rope climbing techniques. We report means, standard errors, 95% confidence intervals and ranges for 11 cavity-related variables. We also report clutch sizes encountered in active nests, and age estimates of nest trees based on known growth rates of Lophozonia trees in southern Chile. Linear regressions were used to evaluate potential relationships between cavity-related variables and clutch size.Results: We located and measured 38 Lophozonia tree cavities used for nesting by Slender-billed Parakeets. Compared to those used by other psittacines, nest trees were relatively large, averaging 30.4 breast height of 134.5 ter ± 1.1 m in height with a mean diameter at ± 4.7 cm. Based on estimated annual diameincrement, ages of nest trees ranged from approximately 209–485 years. Nest cavities entrances averaged 12.5 ± 0.9 m in height above ground level. Cavity entrance widths averaged 51.0 ± 13.3 cm(vertical) by 11.5 ± 0.7 cm(horizontal). Cavity entrance orientations were apparently random, with no directional preferences detected. Nest cavities were also relatively large, with a mean internal diameter of 39.6 psittacines of this size(ca. 280± 2.4 cm and mean depth of 90.3 –300 g) and broods of up to seven± 24.2 cm. Clutch sizes(2–9) were unusually large for well-developed nestlings were observed.Conclusions: We found that the deep and spacious cavities provided by pellines facilitate successful rearing of large broods, thereby maximizing productivity and fitness. The existence of pellines has apparently allowed Slender-billed Parakeets to adapt successfully to a wholesale loss of ancestral habitat to anthropogenic modifications. 10Experiential Learning in Secondary Education Chemistry Courses:A Significant Life Experiences Framework显示文摘Significant life experiences(SLE),a framework first put forward by Thomas Tanner,is a well-known model for understanding attitudes and perceptions about the environment as ascertained through environmental education(EE)programs.The SLE framework posits that early positive experiences in the environment are strongly correlated with later pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors in adulthood.According to the model,these early experiences facilitate this change through“experiential”learning,as opposed to formal learning experiences in a classroom,or even informal learning.While the SLE framework is often used within the EE literature,it is rarely used to model behavior and learning in the classroom setting.Here,we present a new use of the theory to model experiential learning in a high school chemistry course.We present evidence that a new model of SLE being used experimentally by faculty at a high school in New Mexico has led to significant learning gains among students.Specifically,we find evidence that low-achieving students may particularly benefit from this new model of teaching chemistry in the secondary education setting through the“hands-on”process of manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine(N-methyl amphetamine).While this study cohort is small,the authors believe that the findings presented herein may demonstrate the value of SLE and experiential learning within the broader science,technology,engineering,and math(STEM)education field(theory)and pedagogy(practice).Bradley C.Allf Jesse B.Pinkman Walter H.White 2020US-China Education Review(A)2020,10,4:0
