| 1 | The influence of microwave irradiation on rocks for microwaveassisted underground excavation显示文摘Demand is growing for explosive-free rock breakage systems for civil and mining engineering, and spaceindustry applications. This paper highlights the work being undertaken in the Geomechanics Laboratoryof McGill University to make a real application of microwave-assisted mechanical rock breakage to fullfacetunneling machines and drilling. Comprehensive laboratory tests investigated the effect of microwaveradiation on temperature profiles and strength reduction in hard rocks (norite, granite, and basalt)for a range of exposure times and microwave power levels. The heating rate on the surface of the rockspecimens linearly decreased with distance between the sample and the microwave antenna, regardlessof microwave power level and exposure time. Tensile and uniaxial compressive strengths were reducedwith increasing exposure time and power level. Scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) highlightedfracture development in treated basalt. It was concluded that the microwave power level has a strongpositive influence on the amount of heat damage induced to the rock surface. | 2 | Preparation,characterization and application of CuCrO_2/ZnO photocatalysts for the reduction of Cr(VI)显示文摘The delafossite CuCrO2 elaborated by sol-gel from 40nm diameter colloid is optically active in the visible region.It is characterized physically and photoelectrochemically.The microstructure is fairly homogenous with a mean crystallite size of ca.2μm.The optical gap(1.30eV),determined from the diffuse reflectance,is well suited to the sunlight spectrum.The Mott Schottky plot is characteristic of P-type conductivity with a flat band potential of-0.26VSCE.As application,the photoreduction of chromate is successfully achieved in air-equilibrated suspension CuCrO2/ZnO(1/1).CuCrO2 is photoactivated by visible light and the electrons in the conduction band(-1.34VSCE)are injected to ZnO.In the presence of salicylic acid,a conversion of Cr(VI)to Cr(III)of 57% is obtained under optimal conditions(pH3 at 25°C,5×10-4mol/L)because of the HCrO4 dark adsorption onto ZnO(4HCrO4-+3C7H6O3+18O2+16H+→4Cr3++21CO2+19H2O,△G0 =-557kcal/mol).Prolonged illumination is accompanied by a deceleration in the photoactivity owing to the competitive water reduction,an issue of energetic concern.The hetero-system exhibits self sensitization for hydrogen production with an evolution rate of 149μmol/(hr·g). | Wahiba Ketir Gharib Rekhila Mohamed Trari Abdelatif Amrane | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012，24，12： | 4 |

| 5 | Green synthesis of iron oxide(Fe_3O_4)nanoparticles using two selected brown seaweeds:Characterization and application for lead bioremediation显示文摘The exploitation of different plant materials for the biosynthesis of nanoparticles is considered a green technology because it does not involve any harmful chemicals. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles(Fe_3O_4-NPs) were synthesized using a completely green biosynthetic method by reduction of ferric chloride solution using brown seaweed water extracts. The two seaweeds Padina pavonica(Linnaeus) Thivy and Sargassum acinarium(Linnaeus) Setchell 1933 were used in this study. The algae extract was used as a reductant of Fe Cl_3 resulting in the phytosynthesis of Fe_3O_4-NPs. The phytogenic Fe_3O_4-NPs were characterized by surface plasmon band observed close to 402 nm and 415 nm; the obtained Fe_3O_4-NPs are in the particle sizes ranged from 10 to 19.5 nm and 21.6 to 27.4 nm for P. pavonica and S. acinarium, respectively. The strong signals of iron were reported in their corresponding EDX spectra. FTIR analyses revealed that sulphated polysaccharides are the main biomolecules in the algae extracts that do dual function of reducing the Fe Cl_3 and stabilizing the phytogenic Fe_3O_4-NPs. The biosynthesized Fe_3O_4-NPs were entrapped in calcium alginates beads and used in Pb adsorption experiments. The biosynthesized Fe_3O_4-NPs alginate beads via P. pavonica(Linnaeus) Thivy had high capacity for bioremoval of Pb(91%) while that of S. acinarium(Linnaeus) Setchell 1933 had a capacity of(78%) after 75 min.The values of the process parameters for the maximum Pb removal efficiency by Fe_3O_4-NPs alginate beads synthesized via P. pavonica(Linnaeus) Thivy were also estimated. | EL-KASSAS Hala Y.
