| 2 | Zinc-deficient diet aggravates ventilation-induced lung injury in rats显示文摘We investigated the effects of zinc deficiency on acute lung injury(ALI)induced by mechanical ventilation.Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with a zinc-deficient or zinc-proficient diet for 4 weeks,and then received mechanical ventilation at normal frequency and pressure for 30 min.Total protein,cell count,the number of polymorphonuclear neutrophil(PMN)in the bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL),and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)expression in the lung were determined.Activation of nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)was detected by examining the phosphorylation of NF-κB(pNF-κB p65)and the expression of inhibitor of NF-κB(pI-kBα).Compared to the controls,total cell count and the number of PMNs were significantly increased to 160% and 140%,respectively,in zinc-deficient rats treated with ventilation.Activation of NF-κB was significantly increased and VEGF was also increased to three-folds.Zinc deficiency aggravated the inflammatory response in rats and was associated with the overexpression of VEGF in response to mechanical ventilation.Zinc supplementation may be beneficial to zinc-deficient patients during mechanical ventilation. | Xiaoyu Chen Jieyu Bian Yingbin Ge | 2012 | The Journal of Biomedical Research2012,26,1: | 1 |
| 3 | Aggregation-enabled alkene insertion into carbon–halogen bonds显示文摘Molecular aggregation affects the electronic interactions between molecules and has emerged as a powerful tool in material science.Aggregate effect finds wide applications in the research of new physical phenomena;however,its value for chemical reaction development has been far less explored.Herein,we report the development of aggregation-enabled alkene insertion into carbon–halogen bonds.The spontaneous cleavage of C–X(X=Cl,Br,or I)bonds generates an intimate ion pair,which can be quickly captured by alkenes in an aggregated state.Additional catalysts or promoters are not necessary under such circumstances,and solvent quenching experiments indicate that the aggregated state is critical for achieving such sequences.The ionic insertion mode is supported by mechanistic studies,density functional theory calculations,and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory analysis.Results also show that the non-aggregated state may quench the transition state and terminate the insertion process. | Meng-Yao Li Xiao-Mei Nong Han Xiao Ao Gu Shuyang Zhai Jiatong Li Ge Zhang Ze-Jian Xue Yingbin Liu Chunsen Li Guo-Qiang Lin Chen-Guo Feng | 2023 | Aggregate2023,4,5: | 0 |
| 4 | Proliferation in rat gastric mucosal cells induced by chronic ethanol feeding through the ROS/BMK1 pathway显示文摘Objective: To investigate the correlation between the gastric mucosal cell proliferation and low-concentration alcohol intake in a chronic drinking rat model, and to investigate the possible role of ROS/BMK1 pathway in this process. Methods: SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: control group, administered with tap water; ethanol group, with 6% ethanol in the drinking water; quercetin group, with quercetin (100 mg/kg) by intragastric gavage twice a day; ethanol+quercetin group, administered with quercetin combined with 6% ethanol. The cell proliferation in rat gastric mucosa was analyzed by flow cytometery and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemical staining. Activation of ERKs and BMK1 was evaluated by the expression and phosphorylation of these kinases using Western Blot analysis. Results: Compared to the controls, the cell proliferation in gastric mucosa of rats exposed to the ethanol for 7 d was enhanced, and the activation of BMK1 was also increased in this period. Otherwise quercetin, as a free radical scavenger, attenuated increased cell proliferation and activation of BMK1 in rat stomach treated with ethanol. However, no changes of ERKs expression and phosphorylation occurred in the rats in all groups. | 5 | Biomechanism of adhesion in gecko setae显示文摘The study of the adhesion of millions of setae on the toes of geckos has been advanced in recent years with the emergence of new technology and measurement methods. The theory of the mechanism of adhesion by van der Waals forces is now accepted and broadly understood. However, this paper presents limitations of this theory and gives a new hypothesis of the biomechanism of gecko adhesion. The findings are obtained through measurements of the magnitude of the adhesion of setae under three different conditions, to show the close relationship between adhesion and status of the setae. They are reinforced by demonstrating two setal structures, follicle cells and hair, the former making the setae capable of producing bioelectrical charges, which play an important role in attachment and detachment processes. It is shown that the abundant muscular tissues at the base of the setae cells, which are controlled by peripheral nerves, are instrumental in producing the foot movement involved in attachment and detachment.
