Short-pulse laser-driven x-ray radiography显示文摘We have developed a new radiography setup with a short-pulse laser-driven x-ray source. Using a radiography axis perpendicular to both long- and short-pulse lasers allowed optimizing the incident angle of the short-pulse laser on the x-ray source target. The setup has been tested with various x-ray source target materials and different laser wavelengths.Signal to noise ratios are presented as well as achieved spatial resolutions. The high quality of our technique is illustrated on a plasma flow radiograph obtained during a laboratory astrophysics experiment on POLARs. | E.Brambrink S.Baton M.Koenig R.Yurchak N.Bidaut B.Albertazzi J.E.Cross G.Gregori A.Rigby E.Falize A.Pelka F.Kroll S.Pikuz Y.Sakawa N.Ozaki C.Kuranz M.Manuel C.Li P.Tzeferacos D.Lamb | 2016 | High Power Laser Science and Engineering2016,4,3: | 3
Target fabrication for the POLAR experiment on the Orion laser facility显示文摘This article describes the fabrication of a suite of laser targets by the Target Fabrication group in the Central Laser Facility(CLF), STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for the first academic-access experiment on the Orion laser facility(Hopps et al., Appl. Opt. 52, 3597–3601(2013)) at Atomic Weapons Establishment(AWE). This experiment, part of the POLAR project(Falize et al., Astrophys. Space Sci. 336, 81–85(2011); Busschaert et al., New J. Phys. 15, 035020(2013)),studied conditions relevant to the radiation-hydrodynamic processes occurring in a remarkable class of astrophysical star systems known as magnetic cataclysmic variables. A large number of complex fabrication technologies and research and development activities were required to field a total of 80 high-specification targets. Target design and fabrication procedures are described and initial alignment and characterization data are discussed. | C.Spindloe D.Wyatt D.Haddock I.East J.E.Cross C.N.Danson E.Falize J.M.Foster M.Koenig G.Gregori | 2015 | High Power Laser Science and Engineering2015,3,1: | 0
Analytical modelling of the expansion of a solid obstacle interacting with a radiative shock显示文摘In this paper, we present a model characterizing the interaction of a radiative shock(RS) with a solid material, as described in a recent paper(Koenig et al., Phys. Plasmas, 24, 082707(2017)), the new model is then related to recent experiments performed on the GEKKO XII laser facility. The RS generated in a xenon gas cell propagates towards a solid obstacle that is ablated by radiation coming from the shock front and the radiative precursor, mimicking processes occurring in astrophysical phenomena. The model presented here calculates the dynamics of the obstacle expansion, which depends on several parameters, notably the geometry and the temperature of the shock. All parameters required for the model have been obtained from experiments. Good agreement between experimental data and the model is found when spherical geometry is taken into account. As a consequence, this model is a useful and easy tool to infer parameters from experimental data(such as the shock temperature), and also to design future experiments. | Th.Michel E.Falize B.Albertazzi G.Rigon Y.Sakawa T.Sano H.Shimogawara R.Kumar T.Morita C.Michaut A.Casner R Barroso P.Mabey Y.Kuramitsu S.Laffite L.Van Box Som G.Gregori R.Kodama N.Ozaki P.Tzeferacos D.Lamb M.Koenig | 2018 | High Power Laser Science and Engineering2018,6,2: | 0
Implementation of a Faraday rotation diagnostic at the OMEGA laser facility显示文摘Magnetic field measurements in turbulent plasmas are often difficult to perform. Here we show that for kG magnetic fields, a time-resolved Faraday rotation measurement can be made at the OMEGA laser facility. This diagnostic has been implemented using the Thomson scattering probe beam and the resultant path-integrated magnetic field has been compared with that of proton radiography. Accurate measurement of magnetic fields is essential for satisfying the scientific goals of many current laser–plasma experiments. | A.Rigby J.Katz A.F.A.Bott T.G.White P.Tzeferacos D.Q.Lamb D.H.Froula G.Gregori | 2018 | High Power Laser Science and Engineering2018,6,3: | 0
Maser radiation from collisionless shocks: application to astrophysical jets显示文摘This paper describes a model of electron energization and cyclotron-maser emission applicable to astrophysical magnetized collisionless shocks. It is motivated by the work of Begelman, Ergun and Rees [Astrophys. J. 625, 51(2005)] who argued that the cyclotron-maser instability occurs in localized magnetized collisionless shocks such as those expected in blazar jets. We report on recent research carried out to investigate electron acceleration at collisionless shocks and maser radiation associated with the accelerated electrons. We describe how electrons accelerated by lower-hybrid waves at collisionless shocks generate cyclotron-maser radiation when the accelerated electrons move into regions of stronger magnetic fields. The electrons are accelerated along the magnetic field and magnetically compressed leading to the formation of an electron velocity distribution having a horseshoe shape due to conservation of the electron magnetic moment. Under certain conditions the horseshoe electron velocity distribution function is unstable to the cyclotron-maser instability [Bingham and Cairns, Phys. Plasmas 7, 3089(2000); Melrose, Rev. Mod. Plasma Phys. 1, 5(2017)]. | D.C.Speirs K.Ronald A.D.R.Phelps M.E.Koepke R.A.Cairns A.Rigby F.Cruz R.M.G.M.Trines R.Bamford B.J.Kellett B.Albertazzi J.E.Cross F.Fraschetti P.Graham P.M.Kozlowski Y.Kuramitsu F.Miniati T.Morita M.Oliver B.Reville Y.Sakawa S.Sarkar C.Spindloe M.Koenig L.O.Silva D.Q.Lamb P.Tzeferacos S.Lebedev G.Gregori R.Bingham | 2019 | High Power Laser Science and Engineering2019,7,1: | 0
Insensitivity of a turbulent laser-plasma dynamo to initial conditions显示文摘It has recently been demonstrated experimentally that a turbulent plasma created by the collision of two inhomogeneous, asymmetric, weakly magnetized,laser-produced plasma jets can generate strong stochastic magnetic fields via the small-scale turbulent dynamo mechanism, provided the magnetic Reynolds number of the plasma is sufficiently large. In this paper,we compare such a plasma with one arising from two pre-magnetized plasma jets whose creation is identical save for the addition of a strong external magnetic field imposed by a pulsed magnetic field generator. We investigate the differences between the two turbulent systems using a Thomson-scattering diagnostic,x-ray selfemission imaging, and proton radiography. The Thomson-scattering spectra and x-ray images suggest that the external magnetic field has a limited effect on the plasma dynamics in the experiment.Although the external magnetic field induces collimation of the flows in the colliding plasma jets and although the initial strengths of the magnetic fields arising from the interaction between the colliding jets are significantly larger as a result of the external field, the energies and morphologies of the stochastic magnetic fields post-amplification are indistinguishable. We conclude that, for turbulent laser-plasmas with supercritical magnetic Reynolds numbers, the dynamo-amplified magnetic fields are determined by the turbulent dynamics rather than the seed fields or modest changes in the initial flow dynamics of the plasma,a finding consistent with theoretical expectations and simulations of turbulent dynamos. | A.F.A.Bott L.Chen P.Tzeferacos C.A.J.Palmer A.R.Bell R.Bingham A.Birkel D.H.Froula J.Katz M.W.Kunz C.-K.Li H-S.Park R.Petrasso J.S.Ross B.Reville D.Ryu F.H.Séguin T.G.White A.A.Schekochihin D.Q.Lamb G.Gregori | 2022 | Matter and Radiation at Extremes2022,7,4: | 0
Triggering star formation:Experimental compression of a foam ball induced by Taylor–Sedov blast waves显示文摘The interaction between a molecular cloud and an external agent(e.g.,a supernova remnant, plasma jet, radiation,or another cloud)is a common phenomenon throughout the Universe and can significantly change the star formation rate within a galaxy. This process leads to fragmentation of the cloud and to its subsequent compression and can, eventually, initiate the gravitational collapse of a stable molecular cloud. It is,however, difficult to study such systems in detail using conventional techniques(numerical simulations and astronomical observations),since complex interactions of flows occur. In this paper,we experimentally investigate the compression of a foam ball by Taylor–Sedov blast waves,as an analog of supernova remnants interacting with a molecular cloud. The formation of a compression wave is observed in the foam ball, indicating the importance of such experiments for understanding how star formation is triggered by external agents. | B.Albertazzi P.Mabey Th.Michel G.Rigon, J.R.Marques S.Pikuz S.Ryazantsev E.Falize L.Van Box Som J.Meinecke N.Ozaki G.Gregori M.Koenig | 2022 | Matter and Radiation at Extremes2022,7,3: | 0
