| 8 | Acute bacterial infection negatively impacts cancer specific survival of colorectal cancer patients显示文摘AIM:To assess the impact of bacterial infections on cancer-specific survival in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS:This was a retrospective cohort study of colorectal cancer patients treated at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center between January 2006 and April 2010. The presence of bacterial infection during cancer treatment,or up to one year after, was confirmed by laboratory tests or by the physician. Infections of the urinary, respiratory or digestive tracts, bloodstream, skin or surgical site were defined by testing within a single laboratory. Criteria for exclusion from the study were:chronically immunosuppressed patients;transplant patients(due to chronic immunosuppression);human immunodeficiency virus carriers;chronic use of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive drugs;patients with autoimmune disease or primary immunodeficiency;known viral or parasitic infections. Patients with infections that did not require hospitalization were not included in the study because of the difficulty of collecting and tracking data related to infectious processes. In addition, patients hospitalized for pulmonary thromboembolism, stroke, acute myocardial infarction, uncontrolled diabetes, malignant hypercalcemia or other serious non-infectious complications not directly related to infection were also excluded. Survival curves were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method, and logrank tests(univariate analysis) and a Cox test assuming a proportional hazards model(multivariate analysis) were performed to examine associations between clinical history and characteristics of infection with cancer-specific survival. RESULTS:One-hundred and six patients with colorectal cancer were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of bacterial infection. Patient ages ranged from 23 to 91 years, with a median of 55 years. The majority of patients were male(57/106,53.77%) with stage Ⅲ colorectal cancer(45/106,44.11%). A total of 86 bacteriologic events were recorded. Results indicate that the presence and number of infections during or after the end of treatment were associated with poorer-cancer specific survivals(P = 0.02). Elevated neutrophil counts were also associated with poorer cancer-specific survival(P = 0.02). Analysis of patient age revealed that patients > 65 years of age had a poorer cancer-specific survival(P = 0.04). A multivariate analysis demonstrated that infection was an independent predictor of poor survival(HR = 2.62,95%CI:1.26-5.45;P = 0.01) along with advanced clinical staging(HR = 2.63,95%CI:1.08-6.39;P = 0.03). CONCLUSION:Infection and high neutrophil counts are associated with a poorer cancer-specific survival in colorectal cancer patients. | Regina Attiê Ludmilla Thomé Domingos Chinen Eliane Muta Yoshioka Michele Cristina F Silva Vladmir Cláudio Cordeiro de Lima | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,38: | 0 |
| 9 | The role of rhizobacteria in rice plants: Growth and mitigation of toxicity显示文摘Allelopathic compounds reduce the growth and productivity of upland rice plants, especially in consecutive plantations. The rhizobacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens BRM-32111 and Burkholderia pyrrocinia BRM-32113 have been recorded as growth promoters in rice. This study was developed to understand the effect of the application of rhizobacteria on upland rice plants in consecutive plantations. Experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications of four treatments: rice seed inoculated with P. fluorescens BRM-32111, rice seed inoculated with B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113(both sown on soil with rice residue), non-inoculated plants sown on soil with rice residue(control with residue(WR)), and non-inoculated plants on soil with no residue(NR). Roots and seedling growth were adversely affected by allelopathic compounds in control WR plants. Plants inoculated with rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 or B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 induced an increase of 88% in biomass, 3% in the leaf area, 40% in length, 67% in root biomass, 21% in chlorophyll a, 53% in chlorophyll(a+b), 50% in rate of carbon assimilation(A), 227% in A/rubisco carboxylation efficiency(C_i) and 63% in water use efficiency(WUE) compared to control WR plants. These results indicate that rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 and B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 increase the tolerance of rice plants to stress from allelochemicals. There are possible practical agricultural applications of these results for mitigating the effects of environmental allelochemistry on upland rice. | Marcela C F Rêgo Aline F Cardoso Thayná da C Ferreira Marta C C de Filippi Telma F V Batista Rafael G Viana Gisele B da Silva | 2018 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2018,17,12: | 1 |

| 12 | Cross-sectional study to determine viral hepatitis knowledge in different urban populations in Brazil显示文摘AIM To evaluate viral hepatitis knowledge among individuals from different resource areas and health conditions to identify possible gaps.METHODS A cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out among 447 individuals from five distinct populations in Brazil: Southeast Viral Hepatitis Ambulatory(n = 100), South(n = 89) and Northeast(n = 114) Health Center, Southeast(n = 77) and Northeast(n = 67) low resource areas. All individuals answered a questionnaire assessing sociodemographic characteristics and viral hepatitis awareness. The perception was scored based on the average number of correct answers of all participants and categorized as 'low'(0-28 correct answers) or 'desirable'(29-46 correct answers). Associations between sociodemographic characteristics and perception were also evaluated.RESULTS A low level of knowledge was observed in individuals from Northeast Health Center, Northeast and Southeast low resource areas while desirable knowledge was observed in individuals from Viral Hepatitis Ambulatory and South Health Center. According to sociodemographic characteristics, desirable scores were more common among those with secondary education(47.1%), those who declared themselves as white(46.3%), and those who lived in houses with three individuals(25.5%). Multivariate analysis showed an association between viral hepatitis perception and type of population. CONCLUSION The results demonstrated high level of knowledge among study participants from health clinics from the Southeast region of Brazil and the importance of education programs in increasing the level of knowledge in low resource areas. | Helena Medina Cruz Jakeline Ribeiro Barbosa Jeová Keny Baima Colares Antonio Henrique Almeida de Moraes Neto Maria de Fátima Leal Alencar Francisco Inácio Bastos Jurema Corrêa da Mota Filipe Aníbal Carvalho-Costa Claudia Alexandra Pontes Ivantes Lia Laura Lewis-Ximenez Livia Melo Villar | 2018 | World Journal of Hepatology2018,10,11: | 1 |
