5Patterns of host cell inheritance in the bacterial symbiosis of whiteflies显示文摘Whiteflies possess bacterial symbionts Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidium that are housed in specialized cells called bacteriocytes and are faithfully transmitted via the ovary to insect offspring. In one whitefly species studied previously,Bemisia tabaci MEAMI,transmission is mediated by somatic inheritance of bacteriocytes, with a single bacteriocyte transferred to each oocyte and persisting through embryogenesis to the next generation. Here,we investigate the mode of bacteriocyte transmission in two whiefly species,B.tabaci MED,the sister species of MEAM1,and the phylogenetically distant species Trialeurodes vaporariorum.Microsatllite analysis supported by microscopical studies demonstrates that B.tabaci MED bacteriocytes are genetically different from other somatic cells and persist through embryogenesis,as for MEAMI,but T.vaporariorum bacteriocytes are genetically identical to other somatic cells of the insect, likely mediated by the degradation of maternal bacteriocytes in the embryo. These two alternative modes of transmission provide a first demonstration among insect symbioses that the cellular processes underlying vertical transmission of bacterial symbionts can diversify among related host species associated with a single lineage of symbiotic bacteria.Xiao-Rui Xu Na-Na Li Xi-Yu Bao Angela E.Douglas Jun-Bo Luan 2020Insect Science2020,27,5:0
6Succinate: A microbial product that modulates Drosophila nutritional physiology显示文摘Dear Editor,Gut microorganisms process food in animal guts and release many metabolic by-products,which are predicted to influence host physiological processes such as energy and lipid metabolism. Here,we investigate how succi-nate,a TCA cycle intermediate that is a major predicted release product of gut bacteria in Drosophila, influences the nutritional physiology of its Drosophila host.We ad-ministered succinate as a dietary supplement to microbe-free Drosophila, and quantified key nutritional indices.Dietary succinate significantly reduced fly lipid levels by up to~50%.This response was not replicated in paral-lel experiments conducted with dietary fumarate supple-ment,indicating that it could not be attributed to a gen-eral effect of TCA intermediates. We hypothesize that microbe-derived succinate may contribute to the reduced lipid content of Drosophila bearing gut bacteria, relative to axenic Drosophila.More generally, this study high-lights the importance of microbial-derived metabolites as regulators of host metabolism.Freya Q.Zhang John G.McMullen II Angela E.Douglas Nana Y.D.Ankrah 2022Insect Science2022,29,1:0
7Sialendoscopy for sialodocholithiasis following submandibular gland excision:six variations on a theme显示文摘Sialendoscopy is a minimally invasive technique that facilitates the diagnosis and treatment of sialolithiasis. This case series presents the novel use of sialendoscopy to treat sialodocholithiasis in six patients with a non-functional or surgically absent submandibular gland by a single surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania Health System between March 2013 and December 2019.The four female and two male patients had a median age of 56 years and mean follow-up of 16.2 months(range 1-44.5).All stones were successfully removed using sialendoscopy, and in 5 patients a combined approach was utilized. All patients remain asymptomatic at last clinical follow-up.We conclude that sialendoscopy is a viable, minimally invasive method for managing sialodocholithiasis in patients with prior submandibular gland excision or atretic gland. It is also useful as an assistive tool when approaching complex transcervical or transoral procedures in previously instrumented patients.Jennifer E.Douglas W.Walsh Thomas Christopher Z.Wen Laurie A.Loevner Erica R.Thaler Ara A.Chalian Christopher H.Rassekh 2021World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2021,7,4:0
