1Molecular Phylogeny Supports the Validity of Polypedates impresus Yang 2008显示文摘The taxonomy of the Asian tree frogs of the Polypedates leucomystax complex, a group of widespread and morphologically similar species, is very controversial. To ascertain the taxonomic status of these species, we investi- gated the historical relationships among representative samples based on ~ 2 kb of nucleotide sequences from the mitochondrial 12S rRNA, tRNAvaline, and 16S rRNA genes. Our phylogeny resolved five well supported lineages(A, B, C, D and E) in the P. leucomystax complex. Polypedates impresus from Yunnan, China, Polypedates cf. mutus and Polypedates cf. megacephalus from Guangxi and Yunnan, China, and Laos constructed Clade C, which is monophyletic. In order to recognize the unique position of this clade, we considered P. impresus in Clade C as a valid species. Following our phylogeny, Chinese Polypedates, corresponding to the other four clades, should include four species: P. mutus(Clade A); P. braueri(Clade B); P. impresus(Clade C) and P. megacephalus(Clade D). 2A New Species of the Genus Rhacophorus (Anura: Rhacophoridae) from Dabie Mountains in East China显示文摘A new species of rhacophorid of the genus Rhacophorus is described from the Dabie Mountains of west Anhui,east China.The new species,Rhacophorus zhoukaiyae sp.nov.is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: 1) the ventral surface and front-and-rear of the femur is paler yellowish and decorated with irregular grayish blotching,and without obvious spots on the dorsum of the hand and foot webbing; 2) the outer metatarsal tubercle is small; 3) outer fingers are half-webbed and outer toes two third webbed; 4) the skin on the dorsum is smooth and without compressed warts; 5) the throat,chest and belly are pure paler yellowish; 6) the dorsal part of the fingers and toes are grayish-white; 7) the iris is golden-yellow.In addition,the phylogenetic tree showed that all the individuals of R.zhoukaiyae sp.nov.clustered into one distinct clade which suggested the validity of this species.This results could also be used to the support of species delimitation.Currently,this species is known only from mid-elevation montane evergreen forest in the Dabie Mountains of west Anhui,China.Tao PAN Yanan ZHANG Hui WANG Jun WU Xing KANG Lifu QIAN Kai LI Yu ZHANG Jinyun CHEN Dingqi RAO Jianping JIANG Baowei ZHANG 2017Asian Herpetological Research2017,18,1:5
3Reproductive Behavior and Underwater Calls in the Emei Mustache Toad,Leptobrachium boringii显示文摘The Emei mustache toad,Leptobrachium boringii(Megophryidae),is terrestrial but breeds in permanent streams.Primarily,it has a polygynous mating system and polyandry also occurs.The species vigorously defends submerged nest sites.We report on a reproductive study at Mt.Emei,western China conducted in 2004,2006,2007,2009,and 2011 during the breeding season.Males produce both advertisement and courtship calls underwater,and the latter differs from the former in having an additional trill-like last note of low intensity.Females might determine the oviposition location and hence the egg mass location.A low,submissive posture can be adopted by the male to avoid being attacked by other males.When fi ghting,the maxillary nuptial spines are employed as weapons,and males hold their opponents on their spines with the forelimbs that enlarge during the breeding season.Male body size and the quantity of fi ght wounds on its ventral side are positively correlated.Satellite male mating might exist in L.boringii.Additionally,underwater calls from another population of this species and a population of L.leishanense generally are similar to those of the population from Mt.Emei.Yuchi ZHENG Dingqi RAO Robert W.MURPHY Xiaomao ZENG 2011Asian Herpetological Research2011,2,4:5
4A New Species of Japalura(Squamata, Agamidae) from the Nu River Valley in Southern Hengduan Mountains, Yunnan, China显示文摘A population of Japalura from Yunnan Province, China, previously assigned to Japalura splendida, is described as a new species. The new species has been recorded between 1 138–2 500 m in the Nu River drainage between the towns of Liuku and Binzhongluo, and on the lower western slopes of the Nushan and eastern slopes of the Goaligongshan. The new species can be distinguished from other species of Japalura, except J. dymondi, by the following combination of characters: exposed tympani, prominent dorso-lateral stripes, and small gular scales. It is very similar with but differs from J. dymondi by having smooth or feebly keeled dorsal head scales, three relatively enlarged spines on either side of the post-occiput area, strongly keeled and mucronate scales on occiput area and within the lateral stripes, back of arm and leg green, higher number of dorsal-ridge scales(DS) and fourth toe subdigital scales(T4S). 5Strong Limb Tactics of the Boulenger's Lazy Toad,Scutiger boulengeri:Inferred from Limb Muscles显示文摘Theory predicts that well-developed limb musculature can result from sexual selection favoring strong males.We tested for this prediction in the Boulenger's lazy toad(Scutiger boulengeri),a species that exhibits inguinal amplexus.As expected,we found that males had more massive forelimbs and hindlimbs than those of females.In addition,amplectant males had relatively more massive hindlimbs than non-amplectant males.This pattern can be explained by sexual selection,as the greater forelimb muscles allow males to hold females more tightly and massive hindlimbs likely confer a locomotor advantage in defending mates.This study contributes to an increasing body of literature clarifying the role of sexual selection in producing sexual dimorphism in anuran limbs.Lixia ZHANG Xiangyu YUAN Yongsun SHENG Fei YU Xueting ZHONG Xiaohong CHEN Dingqi RAO 2020Asian Herpetological Research2020,11,4:0
6An Annotated List of Lizards(Sauria: Squamata) Recorded from the People's Republic of China显示文摘From the perspectives of biodiversity conservation and management, there is an urgent need to have at hand current synopses of classification and distributions of species. In this paper, we review and summa rize the classifica tions, Chinese a nd English names, type specimens, type localities and distributions of China’s lizard fauna to promote scientific exchange and species conservation among relevant people in China and internationally. As of December 31, 2020, a total of 230species of lizard, belonging to 44 genera and 12 families,have been recorded from China, including 4 invasive species: 2 in the family Gekkonidae, 1 in Iguanidae and one in Dactyloidae. There are 115 endemic species, accounting for 50% of this group. The proportion of endemic species to China was the highest in the family Eublepharidae(84.62%), and the number of endemic species to China was the highest in the family Agamidae(42 species). The species distributions and classifica tion in the “Fa una Sinica(Reptilia 2): Squamata(Lacertilia)” were updated.Among the provincial administrative units, there is a larger number of species in the southern provinces, such as Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Taiwan. Sichuan, Yunnan, and Taiwan harbour relatively more endemic species than others. 7Molecular identification and phylogenetic position of Cuora yunnanensis显示文摘The Yunnan box turtle (Cuora yunnanensis, Boulenger, 1906), which has drawn much attention in conservation biology, was regarded as extinct since it was previously known only from 12 specimens collected in Yunnan, China, before 1908. Recently, live specimens have been discovered which are suggested to be C. yunnanensis. To determine whether the newly discovered specimens are really C. yunnanensis, we have established a molecular phylogeny, with a 1725-bp fragment of mitochondrial DNA, using samples from three live individuals of C. yunnanensis, together with sequence data from a museum specimen of C. yunnanensis (MNHN 1907.10) and other members of the genus Cuora. We found that the three newly discovered individuals and the old museum specimen of C. yunnanensis are very similar both in morphology and in mitochondrial DNA sequence, suggesting that the three new individuals are the very C. yunnanensis, and thus the species is not extinct. 8A New Species of Glyphoglossus Günther,1869(Anura:Microhylidae) from Western Yunnan,China显示文摘A new species of microhylid frog of the genus Glyphoglossus Gunther,1869 is described from Huadianba,Cangshan Mountain,Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture,Yunnan Province,China.Glyphoglossus huadianensis,new species,is compared with congeners from China and other parts of Southeast Asia,and was distinguished from the others by the following combination of characters:adult male body size up to 37.8 mm;pupil rounded;supra tympanic fold distinct;tympanum concealed;toe tips obtuse;subarticular tubercles prominent and rounded;foot webbing extensive;outer metatarsal tubercle present;dorsum tuberculate,yellowish-brown/earth-yellow;and a pair of conspicuous large round spots in groin.The new species is the tenth species of Glyphoglossus to be described,and the second known from China.Dongru ZHANG Shuo LIU Lixia ZHANG Hong HUI Heng XIAO Dingqi RAO 2021Asian Herpetological Research2021,12,4:0
