Short Report:Babywalkers Use and Age of Autonomous Sitting and Walking in Portuguese Infants显示文摘Babywalkers are wheeled seats for infants that support their weight and allow them to move around, pushing the floor with their feet or feet’s toes. The purpose of the present study was to verify if Portuguese infants that used babywalker gained or not temporal advantage compared to infants who did not use any instrument for learning to walk.Data were obtained through a structured questionnaire for parents, with closed questions. Results revealed that babywalkers use does not afford advantages in the acquisition of independent walk. The absence of association between seat and walk autonomously in babywalker users that also used other walk-helper(e.g.,harness belt)reinforces the hypothesis that the use of these equipments may disrupt normal process of transition between seat and walk in infants.Considering the sample of the present study,a great percentage of Portuguese parents still presume that the use of babywalkers or similar equipments are necessary for independent walking acquisition.Babywalkers should be discouraged as an instrument for independent walk learning, and be replaced by functional stimulation, like stepping reflex systematic practice.David Catela Carolina Lagoiro Carolina Gonçalves Filipa Passadinhas Isabela Ribeiro Ana Paula Seabra 2020Psychology Research2020,10,7:1

An Exploratory Behavioral Study in Children of Four Years of Age on the Hypothesis of a Two Streams System in Touch Perception and Language Development显示文摘A two streams system seems to exist for tactile perception. We asked kindergarten children to identify(semantic)and describe the function of grasped unseen instruments of their daily life(fork, knife, spoon, brush, toothbrush, pencil, and scissor),and then,to simulate its use(pragmatic). The capacity to describe the function of the set of instruments was significantly superior to that of identifying them by name, although there was a significant direct association between identification and description of the function in the responses to the set of instruments. The simulation of the instrument function was of two types:(i)use―the child simulated how the instrument is grasped and used;and(ii)incorporation―the child simulated the function of the instrument with her/his own hand. The results support the hypothesis of a two streams tactile system(semantic and pragmatic),and that kindergarten children have the ability to incorporate functional properties of instruments of their daily life, probably as a support for language development.David Catela Catarina Silva Joana Reis Ana Paula Seabra 2018Psychology Research2018,8,11:0
Fisher’(1967)Ambiguity Revised:A Catastrophe Theory’ Approach(I)显示文摘Half of a century has passed on Fisher’ambiguity pictures(1967).To celebrate this occasion,we have analysed his data, using the polynomial function for a cusp catastrophe, and we have discussed the results under dynamical systems theory’propositions.David Catela Liliana Gens Cristiana Mercê 2018Psychology Research2018,8,11:0
Motor Affordances in Family Context of Children 18 to 42 Months,From a Urban Coastland County of Portugal显示文摘AHEMD-SR(Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Self Report)was applied to children from 18 to 42 months(N=132),from a coastal municipality of Portugal. The results revealed that the father’s income provides more conditions for motor development stimulation, and that a higher number of offspring may result in less conditions for the younger ones.Having a mother, whatever her academic qualifications,is also a factor that promotes better conditions. Thus,in families with fewer resources and more children,it is strategically advisable to technically support the mother. The kindergarten appears to be an equalizer factor for opportunities for access to motor stimulation resources.Pedro Rezendes David Catela 2020Psychology Research2020,10,7:0
Dynamic Balance in Children With Trisomy 21:A Pilot Study显示文摘At age 5,children with trisomy 21 have roughly 2 years of delayed motor development. We aimed to verify if children with trisomy 21(AD)(N=6,7.67±1.51 years)had a similar performance to children with a typical development(TD)(N=37,5.19±0.40 years old),in a playful motor action(to spin on herself until she cannot get more). On average,ADs gave less laps, for less time, spending more time per rotation, but without significant difference.Of the AD,one-third fell and rose to continue to spin;one-third stopped and resumed spinning(with intervals of 2.05±0.86s).Three ADs performed the action counterclockwise and the other three in clockwise direction. The results support the hypothesis that AD can perform the activity of spinning, with DT(significantly)younger, allowing to AD momentary pauses and conditions for their physical security.David Catela Ana Paula Seabra Bernardo Matias Miguel Nunes Pedro Neves Samuel Rodrigues 2020Psychology Research2020,10,7:0
Respiratory Control Technique and Heart Rate Variability in a Child With Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder:A Case Study显示文摘Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)is associated to a lower respiratory sinus arrhythmia(RSA)and to a lower heart rate variability(HRV).The purpose of this study is to verify if through breath control,an ADHD boy(9 years old)could increase HRV.During breathing control, the child significantly reduced breathing frequency(BF)and heart rate(HR);significantly augmented mean RR interval and pNN50;augmented HRVi(ns)and HF(ns);and reduced LF/HF ratio(ns).Consequently, during short training sessions, this child had the capacity to augment various parameters of HRV,suggesting an increasing of vagal activity. If vagal activity was reinforced during breathing control,it means that maybe a process of bottom-up adjustment of attention and emotional responses can be promoted.David Catela Susana Alves Isabel Piscalho 2018Psychology Research2018,8,10:0
Haptic Perception of Physical and Functional Properties of Table Tennis and Badminton Rackets in Children and Elderly显示文摘The haptic perception affords detection of the physical and functional properties of an instrument actively sustained.Fifty-seven children(8.82±0.38 years old)and 64 elderlies(71.3±4.46 years old)estimated the length and the distance of the center of percussion for two table tennis rackets and a badminton racket. The eigenvalues of each racket for length and distance from the wrist to the center of percussion were calculated. The present study confirmed the results obtained with field tennis rackets, extending them to table tennis and badminton rackets, and also to children. The elderlies preserved and children had the capacity of haptically detect physical and functional properties of table tennis and badminton rackets. The weight of the rackets affected properties estimations. The eigenvalues may be a valid tool for the definition of physical and functional properties of sport instruments, allowing better adjustment to different motor development stages.Danny Ferreira David Catela 2019Psychology Research2019,9,8:0
Haptic Perception and Motor Behaviors in Infants Users of Ergonomic Pacifiers显示文摘Babies react to changes in the characteristics of objects, presenting haptic recognition after a period of familiarization. We aimed to verify if infants responded to the different spatial orientations of an ergonomic pacifier in the mouth. With informed consent,10 babies(271.6±60.8 days),users of ergonomic pacifiers, revealed motor behaviors that were divisible into three categories, sometimes through successive actions(i.e.,perception-action cycles were present):(i)repositioned correctly the pacifier, through different modes;(ii)repositioned it,but incorrectly, through different modes;and(iii)rejected the pacifier. So,these babies detected the incorrect position of the pacifier, and acted according to the principle of motor equivalence, since they implemented variations of a solution for the same need.Andreia Correia Cláudia Elias Diana David Inês Cabral Mónica Telo David Catela 2019Psychology Research2019,9,8:0
