| 1 | Overview of advances in improving uniformity and water use efficiency of sprinkler irrigation显示文摘Water is the scarcest resource and the importance of the judicious use of water in the agricultural sector for sustaining agricultural growth and the retardation of environmental degradation needs no further elaboration.The successes of using sprinkler irrigation to develop new lands,point the way forward to a much greater role for the development of future land reclamation projects.Water use efficiency through a proper improvement of water management techniques and other production factors are essential to boost on-farm productivity.Various factors affecting uniformity and water use efficiency in sprinkler irrigation have been outlined in this research,highlighting possible ways to improve such essential parameters in crop production.The study emphasizes on an irrigation system that works adequately in applying water to stay within the root zone,making the water always available in sufficient quantities to meet the crop water needs.It suggests practical ways of managing irrigation systems within tolerable limits not neglecting the effects of wind which is a major contributing factor to non uniformity in sprinkler irrigation. | Ransford Opoku Darko Yuan Shouqi Liu Junping Yan Haofang Zhu Xingye | 2017 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,2: | 8 |
| 2 | Inactive matrix Gla protein is elevated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘BACKGROUND Matrix Gla protein(MGP)is a vitamin K dependent peptide which has an established role in suppression of vascular calcification.Recent studies have pointed to a possible link between immunomodulatory effect of MGP and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).AIM To compare plasma levels of dephosphorylated and uncarboxylated MGP(dpucMGP)between IBD patients and controls.METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 70 patients with IBD(30 patients with ulcerative colitis and 40 patients with Crohn’s disease)and 60 age and gender matching healthy controls.Plasma dp-ucMGP levels were analyzed from blood samples by CLIA method using IDS-iSYS InaKtif MGP(Immunodiagnostic Systems,Frankfurt,Germany)according to the manufacturer's instructions.fecal calprotectin(FC)levels were determined from stool samples by turbidimetric immunoassay method using Bühlmann fecal calprotectin turbo assay(Bühlmann Laboratories Aktiengesellschaft,Schonenbuch,Switzerland).Other parameters were analyzed according to the standard laboratory procedures.RESULTS Plasma levels of dp-ucMGP were significantly higher in patients with IBD compared to the healthy control group(629.83±124.20 pmol/mL vs 546.7±122.09 pmol/mL,P<0.001),and there was no significant difference between patients with Crohn’s disease and patients with ulcerative colitis(640.02±131.88 pmol/mL vs 616.23±113.92 pmol/mL,P=0.432).Furthermore,a significant positive correlation of plasma dp-ucMGP levels was found with both FC levels(r=0.396,P<0.001)and high sensitivity C-reactive protein(hsCRP)levels(r=0.477,P<0.001).Moreover,in the total study population a significant positive correlation was found between dp-ucMGP with age(r=0.210,P=0.016)and waist circumference(r=0.264,P=0.002).Multiple linear regression analysis showed that dp-ucMGP levels retained significant association with FC(β±SE,0.06±0.02,P=0.003).CONCLUSION Study results support experimental data of MGP immunomodulatory IBD effect and indicate potential involvement in the pathophysiology of the disease,and possibly extraintestinal manifestations. | Darko Brnic Dinko Martinovic Piero Marin Zivkovic Daria Tokic Marino Vilovic Doris Rusic Ivana Tadin Hadjina Christian Libers Sandro Glumac Daniela Supe-Domic Ante Tonkic Josko Bozic | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,32: | 5 |
| 3 | Phenformin alone or combined with gefitinib inhibits bladder cancer via AMPK and EGFR pathways显示文摘Background:In previous studies,we have shown that the combination of metformin and gefitinib inhibits the growth of bladder cancer cells.Here we examined whether the metformin analogue phenformin,either used alone or in combination with gefitinib,could inhibit growth of bladder cancer cells.Methods:The growth-inhibitory effects of phenformin and gefitinib were tested in one murine and two human bladder cancer cell lines using MTT and clonogenic assays.Effects on cell migration were assessed in a wound healing assay.Synergistic action between the two drugs was assessed using CompuSyn software.The potential involvement of AMPK and EGFR pathways in the effects of phenformin and gefitinib was explored using Western blotting.Results:In MTT and clonogenic assays,phenformin was>10-fold more potent than metformin in inhibiting bladder cancer cell growth.Phenformin also potently inhibited cell migration in wound healing assays,and promoted apop-tosis.AMPK signaling was activated;EGFR signaling was inhibited.Phenformin was synergistic with gefitinib,with the combination of drugs showing much stronger anticancer activity and apoptotic activation than phenformin alone.Conclusions:Phenformin shows potential as an effective drug against bladder cancer,either alone or in combination with gefitinib. | Yanjun Huang Sichun Zhou Caimei He Jun Deng Ting Tao Qiongli Su Kwame Oteng Darko Mei Peng Xiaoping Yang | 2018 | Cancer Communications2018,38,1: | 5 |
| 4 | Extreme gastric dilation caused by chronic lead poisoning: A case report显示文摘Lead is a toxic metal that affects many organ systems and functions in humans. In the majority of adults, chronic lead poisoning comes from exposures to work places and can occur in numerous work settings, such as manufacturing, lead smelting and refinement, or due to use of batteries, pigments, solder, ammunitions, paint, car radiators, cable and wires, certain cosmetics. In some countries, lead is added to petrol. We present a rare case of gastric dilation caused by long-term petrol ingestion. A 16-year-old young man was admitted to our hospital due to a 6-mo history of exhaustion, dizziness, nausea, abdominal cramps and constipation. X-ray examination revealed dilated stomach descending into the pelvis and small bowel distension. After a long clinical observation, we found that the reason for the chronic lead poisoning of the patient was due to a 3-year history of petrol ingestion. The patient spontaneously recovered and stomach returned to its normal position and size. | 5 | Carcinosarcoma of the stomach:A case report and review of the literature显示文摘Carcinosarcomas are rare,malignant,biphasic tumors. We report the case of a 62-year-old man with gastric carcinosarcoma,along with its clinical,macroscopic and histopathological features. Macroscopically,a specimen of deformed stomach was obtained that measured 200 mm×150 mm×100 mm. A 150 mm×100 mm× 50 mm exophytic tumoral mass (Borrmann typeⅠ) was found,which involved the posterior wall from the cardia to the antrum. Histopathologically,a mixed type of malignancy was revealed: an adenocarcinoma with intestinal metaplasia,with interposed fascicles of fusiform atypical cells and numerous large,rounded and oval cells. The tumor showed positive histochemistry for cytokeratin 18,epithelial membrane antigen,carcinoembryonic antigen,chromogranin A and vimentin. Liver metastases were diagnosed 8 mo postoperatively,and the patient died 4 mo later. | 8 | Determination of crop and soil evaporation coefficients for estimating evapotranspiration in a paddy field显示文摘Accurate estimation of evapotranspiration is important in efficient water management for improving water use efficiency.In order to obtain evapotranspiration and evaporation beneath the canopy using the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO)method,pan evaporation was used instead of reference evapotranspiration calculated by the Penman-Monteith equation with detailed meteorological data.The total crop coefficient and soil evaporation coefficient were determined using actual measured daytime evapotranspiration and evaporation by the Bowen ratio energy balance and lysimeter,respectively,in a rice paddy field in Japan.The average evapotranspiration was 5.3 mm/d,4.4 mm/d,7.4 mm/d and 6.3 mm/d and crop coefficient was 0.79,1.18,1.01 and 0.86 for the initial stage,development stage,middle-season stage and late-season stage,respectively.The evaporation was low and almost constant with an average value around 0.77 mm/d when the leaf area index(LAI)reached 3.The proposed average crop coefficients for different growing stages were applied to estimate daytime evapotranspiration and found suitable.A simple soil water evaporation coefficient model was developed using leaf area index for practical use and it was found that it could accurately estimate evaporation. | Yan Haofang Zhang Chuan Hiroki Oue Peng Guangjie Ransford Opoku Darko | 2017 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2017,10,4: | 2 |

| 15 | Sustainable development of lignite production on open cast mines in Serbia显示文摘Energy sector represents a key industrial branch for national, environmental and economic success. With its exclusive access to domestic deposits, lignite industry represents a guarantor of reliable raw materials, offering long-term supply security based on verified reserves. Currently operated coalmines in Serbia (Kolubara and Kostolac) have production around 36 million tons of lignite, and over 108 million m3 of overburden. Consequently, sustainability of lignite production requires cost reduction and environmental protection, as well as capacity increase. In order to rationalise, and increase efficiency of Serbian lignite mines, it is necessary to focus the activities on major issues shown within the triangle of energy policy objectives (security of supply, competi- tive prices and environmental protection). Production process optimisation singled out several special programs. Equipment revi- talization and modernization is necessary taking into account that majority of the currently operated machinery has a life up to 25 years. Production process automation would enable high level of technical operation in the field of open cast mines management. Lack of coal quality uniformity is the permanent problem resulting by great amounts of coal reserves to be used uneconomically.
