2A hydrophilic poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) polymer as a green, universal, and dual-functional binder for high-performance silicon anode and sulfur cathode显示文摘Binders could play crucial or even decisive roles in the fabrication of low-cost, stable and high-capacity electrodes. This is especially the case for the silicon (Si) anodes and sulfur (S) cathodes that undergo large volume change and active material loss in lithium-ion batteries during prolonged cycles. Herein, a hydrophilic polymer poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEMA) was explored as a dual-functional aqueous binder for the preparation of high-performance silicon anode and sulfur cathode. Benefiting from the dual functions of PMVEMA, i.e., the excellent dispersion ability and strong binding forces, the as-prepared electrodes exhibit improved capacity, rate capability and long-term cycling performance. In particular, the as-prepared Si electrode delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 1346.5 mAh g^(−1) at a high rate of 8.4 A/g and maintains 834.5 mAh g^(−1) after 300 cycles at 4.2 A/g, while the as-prepared S cathode exhibits enhanced cycling performance with high remaining discharge capacities of 663.4 mAh g^(−1) after 100 cycles at 0.2 C and 487.07 mAh g^(−1) after 300 cycles at 1 C, respectively. 4Housing Sulfur in Polymer Composite Frameworks for Li–S Batteries显示文摘Extensive efforts have been devoted to the design of micro-, nano-, and/or molecular structures of sulfur hosts to address the challenges of lithium–sulfur(Li–S) batteries, yet comparatively little research has been carried out on the binders in Li–S batteries. Herein, we systematically review the polymer composite frameworks that confine the sulfur within the sulfur electrode, taking the roles of sulfur hosts and functions of binders into consideration. In particular, we investigate the binding mechanism between the binder and sulfur host(such as mechanical interlocking and interfacial interactions), the chemical interactions between the polymer binder and sulfur(such as covalent bonding, electrostatic bonding, etc.), as well as the beneficial functions that polymer binders can impart on Li–S cathodes, such as conductive binders, electrolyte intake, adhesion strength etc. This work could provide a more comprehensive strategy in designing sulfur electrodes for long-life, large-capacity and high-rate Li–S battery.Luke Hencz Hao Chen Han Yeu Ling Yazhou Wang Chao Lai Huijun Zhao Shanqing Zhang 2019Nano-Micro Letters2019,11,1:2
5The impact of ipsilateral testicular atrophy on semen quality and sperm DNA fragmentation response to varicocele repair显示文摘Varicoceles adversely impact semen quality and sperm DNA fragmentation,which typically improve with surgical repair.Some men with varicoceles have ipsilateral testicular atrophy due to damage from the varicocele.This study assessed semen quality and the sperm DNA fragmentation index(DFI)response to varicocele repair in men with ipsilateral testicular atrophy(TA)versus men with no testicular atrophy(NTA).Semen parameter values and DFI in both groups were compared preoperatively and postoperatively.The Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used where appropriate.There were 20 men in the TA group and 121 men in the NTA group with no difference in age,varicocele grade,or preoperative semen parameter values between the two groups.The NTA group had a higher preoperative DFI than the TA group.Both groups showed improvement in semen quality postoperatively,only the TA group showed a significant improvement in DFI,whereas the NTA group showed significant improvements in several parameter values and DFI.The change from preoperative to postoperative parameter values when comparing the two groups revealed a difference in total sperm motile count and DFI,with a larger mean improvement in the NTA group than in the TA group.Both TA and NTA groups showed improved semen quality and DFI after varicocele repair,but the NTA group had more improvement than the TA group.However,only total motile count(TMC)and DFI had a significantly greater mean change in preoperative to postoperative response in the NTA group than in the TA group.Parviz K Kavoussi Natasha Abdullah Melissa S Gilkey Caitlin Hunn G Luke Machen Shu-Hung Chen Keikhosrow M Kavoussi Amy Esqueda J David Wininger Shahryar K Kavoussi 2021Asian Journal of Andrology2021,23,2:2

16Anthropogenic pressures increase extinction risk of an isolated Asian elephant(Elephas maximus)population in southwestern China,as revealed by a combination of molecular-and landscape-scale approaches显示文摘Identification of the effect of anthropogenic threats on ecosystem is crucial.We used molecular tools and remote sensing to evaluate the population status of an isolated Asian elephant population in southwestern China in response to changes in habitat suitability between 1989 and 2019.A total of 22 unique genotypes were identified from 117 dung samples collected between March and June 2018 using microsatellite DNA analysis,including 13 males and 9 females.Based on the size of fecal boli,1 animal was a juvenile,9 were subadults,and 12 were adults,indicating that recruitment was limited.The effective population size was small(15.3)but there was no signature of a recent population bottleneck.We observed a low genetic diversity(He=0.46±0.05)and a high level of inbreeding(Fis of 0.43±0.11),suggesting low population viability and high risk of extinction.In total,these elephants lost nearly two thirds(62%)of their habitat in 3 decades.The expansion of agriculture and rubber plantations followed by an increase in human settlements after 1989 increased the isolation of this population.We recommend that resettlement of 800 inhabitants of 2 villages and the abandonment of associated farmland and rubber plantations would make an additional 20 km2 of suitable habitat available.This could allow a population increase of 14 elephants,possibly by translocating individuals from elsewhere in China.Ourfindings can be applied to the management and conservation of other fragmented populations in China or in other range countries of Asian elephants.Ying CHEN Yakuan SUN Luciano ATZENI Luke GIBSON Mei HUA Keyu LI Kun SHI David DUDGEON 2022Integrative Zoology2022,17,6:1
