Characteristics of the modern pollen assemblages from different vegetation zones in Northeast China:Implications for pollen-based climate reconstruction显示文摘Northeast China is an essential area for studying the strength of East Asian Summer Monsoon(EASM), due to its northernmost location in EASM domain. However, the lack of sufficient modern pollen data in this region hinders an effective interpretation of fossil pollen records and quantitative vegetation/climate reconstructions. Here, 44 surface pollen samples from forest, steppe, and meadow were used to explore pollen-vegetation-climate relationships. Cluster analysis, species indicator analysis, and principal components analysis, were used to identify the discontinuous and continuous trends in pollen dataset. In addition, correlation analysis and boosted regression trees were used to investigate primary explanatory variables, while coinertia analysis and redundancy analysis to examine pollen-vegetation and pollen-climate correlations respectively. Our results show that:(1) vegetation can be well represented by surface pollen assemblages, i.e. forest is characterized by a high proportion of tree pollen(>70%) dominated by Betula(>40%) along with Alnus, Larix, and Pinus, whereas Steppe by herb pollen(>80%),dominated by Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae;(2) significant correlations exist between pollen assemblages and mean annual temperature and then mean annual precipitation;(3) pollen ratios of Artemisia/Chenopodiaceae and arboreal/non-arboreal can respectively be used as good indicators of humidity and temperature in Northeast China. | Qiaoyu CUI Yan ZHAO Feng QIN Chen LIANG Quan LI Rongwei GENG | 2019 | Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,10: | 5
Paleoclimatic indication of X-ray fluorescence core-scanned Rb/Sr ratios: A case study in the Zoige Basin in the eastern Tibetan Plateau显示文摘The X-ray fluorescence(XRF)core-scanned Rb/Sr ratios of lake sediments have been widely used as a proxy for chemical weathering intensity and past climate change. However, some factors could affect Rb/Sr ratios, causing misinterpretation and limiting its application. In this study,we present a high-resolution XRF core-scanned Rb/Sr record of core ZB13-C1 from the Zoige Basin in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. To validate its application,we correlated this record with the chemical index of alteration(CIA)and other paleoclimatic proxies. Our results showed that(1)the core-scanned Rb/Sr ratios and CIA were reliable proxies of chemical weathering intensity in fine-grained sedimentary sequences;(2)the low values of corescanned Rb/Sr ratios and CIA were significantly correlated with high total organic carbon content, arboreal pollen content, carbonate content, and C/N ratios, confirming its reliability as a proxy for the Asian summer monsoon intensity;(3)the corescanned Rb/Sr ratios at core depths of 25–0.3 and 56–47 m were unable to reliably reflect chemical weathering intensity due to both the grain-size effect and the low test accuracy. Our study highlights the need for mutual verification of multiple indicators before accurately applying Rb/Sr as a paleoclimatic proxy in other similar study areas. | Hanfei YANG Yan ZHAO Qiaoyu CUI Weihe REN Quan LI | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,1: | 5
A case study of the role of climate, humans, and ecological setting in Holocene fire history of northwestern Europe显示文摘We present the major results from studies of fire history over the last 11000 years(Holocene) in southern Sweden, on the basis of palaeoecological analyses of peat sequences from three small peat bogs. The main objective is to emphasize the value of multiple, continuous sedimentary records of macroscopic charcoal(macro-C) for the reconstruction of local to regional past changes in fire regimes, the importance of multi-proxy studies, and the advantage of model-based estimates of plant cover from pollen data to assess the role of tree composition and human impact in fire history. The chronologies at the three study sites are based on a large number of 14 C dates from terrestrial plant remains and age-depth models are achieved using Bayesian statistics. Fire history is inferred from continuous records of macro-C and microscopic charcoal counts on pollen slides. The Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm(LRA) for pollen-based quantitative reconstruction of local vegetation cover is applied on the three pollen records for plant cover reconstruction over the entire Holocene. The results are as follows:(1) the long-term trends in fire regimes are similar between sites, i.e., frequent fires during the early Holocene until ca. 9 ka BP, low fire frequency during the mid-Holocene, and higher fire frequency from ca. 2.5 ka BP;(2) this broad trend agrees with the overall fire history of northwestern and western Europe north of the Mediterranean area, and is due to climate forcing in the early and mid-Holocene, and to anthropogenic land-use in the late Holocene;(3) the LRA estimates of plant cover at the three sites demonstrate that the relative abundance of pine played a primordial role in the early and mid-Holocene fire history; and(4) the between-site differences in the charcoal records and inferred fire history are due to local factors(i.e., relative abundance of pine, geomorphological setting, and anthropogenic land-use) and taphonomy of charcoal deposition in the small peat bogs. It is shown that continuous macro-C records are most useful to disentangle local from regional-subcontinental fire history, and climate-induced from human-induced fire regimes, and that pollen-based LRA estimates of local plant cover are more adequate than pollen percentages for the assessment of the role of plant composition on fire history. | CUI QiaoYu Marie-José GAILLARD Fredrik OLSSON Annica GREISMAN Geoffrey LEMDAHL Ganna ZERNOVA | 2015 | Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,2: | 2
High-frequency climatic fluctuations over the past 30 ka in northwestern margin of the East Asian monsoon region, China显示文摘Whether millennial-to centennial-scale climate variations throughout the Holocene convey universal climate change is still widely debated. In this study,we aimed to obtain a set of high-resolution multi-proxy data(1343 particle size samples,893 total organic carbon samples, and 711 pollen samples)from an alluvial-lacustrine-aeolian sequence based on an improved age-depth model in the northwestern margin of the East Asian monsoon region to explore the dynamics of climate changes over the past 30 ka.Results revealed that the sequence not only documented the major climate events that corresponded well with those reported from the North Atlantic regions but also revealed many marked and high-frequency oscillations at the millennial-and centennial-scale.Specifically,the late stage of the last glacial lasting from 30.1 to 18.1 cal.ka BP was a dry and cold period. The deglacial(18.1-11.5 cal.ka BP)was a wetting(probably also warming)period, and three cold and dry excursions were found in the wetting trend,i.e.,the Oldest Dryas(18.1-15.8 cal.ka BP),the Older Dryas(14.6-13.7 cal.ka BP),and the Younger Dryas(12.5-11.5 cal.ka BP).The Holocene can be divided into three portions:the warmest and wettest early portion from 11.5 to 6.7 cal.ka BP,the dramatically cold and dry middle portion from 6.7 to 3.0 cal.ka BP,and the coldest and driest late portion since 3.0 cal.ka BP.Wavelet analysis results on the total pollen concentration revealed five substantially periodicities:c.5500,2200,900,380,and 210 a.With the exception of the c.5500 a quasi-cycle that was causally associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, the other four quasi-cycles(i.e.,c.2200,900,380,and 210 a)were found to be indirectly causally associated with solar activities. This study provides considerable insight into the dynamic mechanism of the Asian climate on a long-time scale and future climatic change. | WU Huining CUI Qiaoyu | 2022 | Journal of Arid Land2022,14,12: | 0
Does palynological diversity reflect floristic diversity?A case study from Northeast China显示文摘Fossil pollen data can provide important information of past vegetation diversity,on the basis of established relationship between modern palynological and floristic diversity. However, current studies on modern pollen assemblages in China have not examined this relationship yet.Herein,we report a case study from Northeast China, aiming to investigate the representation of modern palynological diversity to regional floristic diversity.A total of 87 sets of modern pollen and vegetation data from various vegetation types were applied to assess modern palynological diversity and floristic diversity in Northeast China, and the relationship between palynological and floristic diversity was studied using spatial pattern comparison and correlation analysis. Moreover,to reduce representation bias related to pollen production and dispersal,we calibrated pollen data using the Regional Estimates of Vegetation Abundance from Large Sites(REVEALS)model with Pollen Productivity Estimates(PPEs)and Fall Speeds of Pollen(FSP).The results show that the spatial variations of palynological and floristic richness among vegetation types are similar, and have a good positive correlation(r=0.41,p<0.01).However,palynological evenness presents a different spatial pattern from floristic evenness, with a weaker positive correlation(r=0.21,p>0.05).The calibration on pollen data using REVEALS model minimized the differences in spatial patterns between palynological and floristic diversity, and improved the correlations between them(richness,r=0.50,p<0.01;evenness,r=0.33,p<0.01).Our study indicates that palynological richness in Northeast China could reflect regional floristic richness in general, and the calibration with REVEALS model is recommended for reconstructing past floristic diversity from pollen data. | Yifan CUI Feng QIN Yan ZHAO Qiaoyu CUI Rongwei GENG Quan LI | 2023 | Science China Earth Sciences2023,66,9: | 0
