1Spatial Characteristics of Extreme Rainfall over China with Hourly through 24-Hour Accumulation Periods Based on National-Level Hourly Rain Gauge Data显示文摘Hourly rainfall measurements of 1919 national-level meteorological stations from 1981 through 2012 are used to document, for the first time, the climatology of extreme rainfall in hourly through 24-h accumulation periods in China. Rainfall amounts for 3-,6-,12- and 24-h periods at each station are constructed through running accumulation from hourly rainfall data that have been screened by proper quality control procedures. For each station and for each accumulation period, the historical maximum is found, and the corresponding 50-year return values are estimated using generalized extreme value theory. Based on the percentiles of the two types of extreme rainfall values among all the stations, standard thresholds separating Grade I,Grade II and Grade III extreme rainfall are established, which roughly correspond to the 70th and 90th percentiles for each of the accumulation periods. The spatial characteristics of the two types of extreme rainfall are then examined for different accumulation periods. The spatial distributions of extreme rainfall in hourly through 6-h periods are more similar than those of 12- and 24-h periods. Grade III rainfall is mostly found over South China, the western Sichuan Basin, along the southern and eastern coastlines, and in the large river basins and plains. There are similar numbers of stations with Grade III extreme hourly rainfall north and south of 30°N,but the percentage increases to about 70% south of 30°N as the accumulation period increases to 24 hours, reflecting richer moisture and more prolonged rain events in southern China. Potential applications of the extreme rainfall climatology and classification standards are suggested at the end.Yongguang ZHENG Ming XUE Bo LI Jiong CHEN Zuyu TAO 2016Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2016,33,11:28
2Breaches of the Baige Barrier Lake: Emergency response and dam breach flood显示文摘This paper documents the emergency response to the breaches of the Baige Barrier Lake. The lake was successively formed by landslides that occurred on October 10 and November 3, 2018 at the provincial border between Sichuan and Tibet in China. The barrier lake created by the '10.10' landslide breached on October 12 and triggered a flood with a peak discharge around 10000 m^3/s. The residual landslide barrier was enhanced by a second landslide on November 3, resulting in a higher barrier with larger flood potential. An overflow channel was excavated in the crest of the barrier to prompt the breach to be triggered at a lower water level. The second breach happened on November 12 with a measured peak discharge of 31000 m^3/s. Nearly 75000 people were evacuated before the two breaches. In order to prevent the downstream dams from possible over-topping, nearly 3.27×10~8 m^3 of the stored volume was released from the Liyuan reservoir 688 km downstream of Baige Barrier Lake. This paper presents the measured hydrographs and the back-analysis results for the '11.03' barrier lake. It is shown that the modern models of dam breach hydraulics can reasonably reproduce the barrier breach hydrographs;however, further studies are needed to define the key parameters which highly influence the calculated results. Knowledge acquired during the emergency response to the case can be shared with experts working on breaches of embankment dams and can be referenced to promote both the theory study and the engineering practice to mitigate the potential risks caused by this type of catastrophic events.CAI YaoJun CHENG HaiYun WU ShuaiFeng YANG QiGui WANG Lin LUAN YueSheng CHEN ZuYu 2020Science China(Technological Sciences)2020,63,7:19
3Comparisons between centrifuge and numerical modeling results for slope toppling failure显示文摘This paper presents series studies on the toppling mechanism by centrifuge tests and numerical simulations. Two different discrete element methods, i.e., the continuum-based discrete element method(CDEM) and the discontinuous deformation analysis(DDA), are adopted. The modeling results show that both the methods can accurately capture the failure modes of the centrifuge tests, including three distinct zones and two failure surfaces. Comparisons are made between the physical test and numerical simulation results. The critical inclination angle of the tilting table where the slope models are fixed on can be moderately predicted by the two methods, with different degrees of precision. The error between the test results and the simulated results is within 1% for the slope models without rock-bridges by both CDEM and DDA. However, it is amplified for the staggered-joint models that simulate the rock-bridges. With DDA, the average error is about 5%, and the maximum error is up to 17%. While with CDEM, the errors for the aligned-joint models are ranged from 1% to 6%, and it is from 10% to 29% for the staggered-joint models. The two numerical methods show the capability in simulating toppling failure of blocky rock mass with and without rock-bridges. The model with rock-bridges which provides a certain bending resistance is more stable than the one without any rock-bridge. In addition, the two failure surfaces were observed, which is different from the common understanding that only one failure surface appears.CHEN ZuYu GONG WenJun MA GuoWei WANG Jie HE Lei XING YiChuan XING JianYing 2015Science China(Technological Sciences)2015,58,9:18
4Advanced prediction of tunnel boring machine performance based on big data显示文摘Predicting the performance of a tunneling boring machine is vitally important to avoid any possible accidents during tunneling boring. The prediction is not straightforward due to the uncertain geological conditions and the complex rock-machine interactions.Based on the big data obtained from the 72.1 km long tunnel in the Yin-Song Diversion Project in China, this study developed a machine learning model to predict the TBM performance in a real-time manner. The total thrust and the cutterhead torque during a stable period in a boring cycle was predicted in advance by using the machine-returned parameters in the rising period.A long short-term memory model was developed and its accuracy was evaluated. The results show that the variation in the total thrust and cutterhead torque with various geological conditions can be well reflected by the proposed model. This real-time predication shows superior performance than the classical theoretical model in which only a single value can be obtained based on the single measurement of the rock properties. To improve the accuracy of the model a filtering process was proposed. Results indicate that filtering the unnecessary parameters can enhance both the accuracy and the computational efficiency. Finally, the data deficiency was discussed by assuming a parameter was missing. It is found that the missing of a key parameter can significantly reduce the accuracy of the model, while the supplement of a parameter that highly-correlated with the missing one can improve the prediction.Jinhui Li Pengxi Li Dong Guo Xu Li Zuyu Chen 2021Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,1:17
5Underwater explosion in centrifuge partⅠ:Validation and calibration of scaling laws显示文摘Centrifuge is a promising tool for underwater explosion(UNDEX) research as both Mach and Froude similitudes could be satisfied with hyper-gravity in models, which would result in similarities in both shock wave and bubble oscillation. Scaling laws for UNDEX in centrifuge have been proposed based on dimensional analysis. Two dimensionless numbers, i.e.,π_3 and π_4, are used to characterize shock wave and bubble oscillation, respectively. To validate scaling laws, 17 UNDEX tests are designed by varying accelerations or explosive weights and positions in centrifuge. The tests are classified into different groups to validate scaling laws as well as calibrate coefficients in empirical formulae for both shock wave and bubble oscillation. The results show that changes of gravity acceleration or hydrodynamic pressure almost has no influence on shock wave peak pressure and time constant as long as π3 is constant. The dimensionless bubble period and maximum radius agreed with each other when π4 is constant. Based on the research, an example is exhibited to suggest method for the computation of initial loading conditions for a submerged obstacle subjected to UNDEX.HU Jing CHEN ZuYu ZHANG XueDong WEI YingQi LIANG XiangQian LIANG JianHui MA GuoWei WANG QiuSheng LONG Yuan 2017Science China(Technological Sciences)2017,60,11:14
6Quantitative deterministic versus probability analyses based on a safety margin criterion显示文摘This paper proposes a new criterion called the ratio of safety margin(RSM)for use in the areas of the global factor of safety, reliability and limit states analyses with reference to their respective allowable criteria. An equation for calculating RSM based on the reliability index is formulated.Efforts for proving the applicability of this criterion include a theoretical demonstration in a simple one-variable case;an investigation on a test problem involving two random variables, followed by a slope stability study on a 156 m high embankment dam and an illustrative example presented in a EuroCode 7 guidebook.Calculation of the ratios of safety margin in the three areas provides a quantitative way to accommodate the analytical results within the same theoretical framework and makes the outcomes mutually comparable and supportive, which is much more enlightening than that would be the case by considering only one of them.Calculating RSMs for reliability and limit states methods has also helped solve the key issue concerning the uniqueness of the partial factors calibrated from a particular‘target case’.CHEN ZuYu CHEN LiHong XU JiaCheng SUN Ping WU Chao WANG YuJie 2014Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,10:12
7An approach to quick and easy evaluation of the dam breach flood显示文摘In the context of an impending dam failure, quick evaluation of dam breach flood is necessary. Previous studies provided an approach to calculate the dam breach hydrograph using an Excel spreadsheet based on the improved soil erosion model and numerical algorithm. However, calculation of the breach lateral enlargement requires the modeling of the successive collapse of the breach banks. It is time-consuming with special training, which is difficult to provide during an emergency. This study proposes that the lateral enlargement process can be modeled using a hyperbolic relationship with sufficient accuracy. Consequently, field engineers can perform the dam breach analysis along with the sensitive study for a target case within 1 h in an Excel spreadsheet which is self-tutorial. This paper presents this easy and quick approach based on only fifteen input parameters that can be determined based on the experience. This approach can also be used for the preliminary study when a dam safety planning work is undertaken.CHEN ZuYu PING ZiYi WANG NaiXin YU Shu CHEN ShuJing 2019Science China(Technological Sciences)2019,62,10:9
8Risk analysis for clustered check dams due to heavy rainfall显示文摘Check dams are commonly constructed around the world for alleviating soil erosion and preventing sedimentation of downstream rivers and reservoirs.Check dams are more vulnerable to failure due to their less stringent flood control standards compared to other dams.Determining the critical precipitation that will result in overtopping of a dam is a useful approach to assessing the risk of failure on a probabilistic basis and for providing early warning in case of an emergency. However, many check dams are built in groups, spreading in several tributaries in cascade forms, comprising a complex network.Determining the critical precipitation for dam overtopping requires a knowledge of its upstream dams on whether they survived or were overtopped during the same storm, while these upstream dams in turn need the information for their upstream dams. The current paper presents an approach of decomposing the dam cluster into(1)the heading dam,(2)border dams,and(3)intermediate dams. The algorithm begins with the border dams that have no upstream dams and proceeds with upgraded maps without the previous border dams until all the dams have been checked. It is believed that this approach is applicable for small-scale check dam systems where the time lag of flood routing can be neglected. As a pilot study, the current paper presents the analytical results for the Wangmaogou Check Dam System that has 22 dams connected in series and parallel. The algorithm clearly identified 7 surviving dams, with the remaining ones being overtopped for a storm of 179.6 mm in 12 h,which is associated with a return period of one in 200 years.Zuyu Chen Xieping Huang Shu Yu Wei Cao Weiqin Dang Yangqiang Wang 2021International Journal of Sediment Research2021,36,2:9
9Underwater explosion in centrifuge Part Ⅱ:Dynamic responses of defensive steel plate显示文摘Part II of this paper is focused on the dynamic response of a steel plate of the centrifuge model which is fixed on the container. This plate is 5 cm thick, allowing for non-destructive elastic response to all the 19 blasts. Three accelerators and 10 sets of strain gauges are installed on the plate to monitor the acceleration and deformation histories induced by shock waves and bubble oscillations. This article presents the characteristic values measured for shock waves and bubble oscillations response. The detailed information can be found in a database available on the web. In order to obtain the correct acceleration time history, the cut-off frequency of low-pass filtering by Fourier transformation was applied. The results indicated that the acceleration and strain induced by shock wave was nearly unaffected by the increasing gravity, while the effect of gravity has remarkable influence on those induced by bubble oscillation. A preliminary study of comparing the measured dynamic response with numerical simulations has been carried out using ANSYS LS-DYNA. The results captured the dynamic response in terms of characteristics and trends, but deviated in magnitude due the theoretical and technological limitations involved in both the physical and numerical models. It certainly deserves further studies.LONG Yuan ZHOU HongYuan LIANG XiangQian SONG Ge CHEN ZuYu HU Jing WANG QiuSheng ZHANG XueDong LIANG JianHui HUANG ZhiJie 2017Science China(Technological Sciences)2017,60,12:8
103-dimensional slope stability analyses using non-associative stress-strain relationships显示文摘The research work presented in this paper refers to a new slope stability analysis method used for landslide risk evaluations. It is an extension of the 3-dimensional upper-bound slope stability analysis method proposed by Chen et al. in 2001,which employs the Mohr-Coulomb's associative flow rule. It has been found that in a 3-dimensional area,a prism may not be able to move at friction angles to all its surrounding interfaces,as required by this associative rule, and convergence problems may occasionally arise. The new method establishes two velocity fields:(i) The plastic one that represents a non-associative and the best representative dilation behavior, and (ii) the virtual one that permits the solution for factor of safety in the work and energy balance equation. The new method can then allow any input value of dilation angle and thus solve the convergence problem. A practical application to a concrete dam foundation is illustrated.CHEN ZuYu SUN Ping WANG YuJie ZHANG HongTao 2009Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,9:4
11Erosion-control mechanism of sediment check dams on the Loess Plateau显示文摘Severe soil erosion occurs on the Loess Plateau in China, which makes the Yellow River the most sediment-laden river in the world. Construction of about 60,000 sediment check dams has remarkably controlled soil erosion on the Loess Plateau and reduced the sediment load of the middle and lower Yellow River. Nonetheless, little is known about the mechanism of erosion control and vegetation development of sediment check dams. The function of a single check dam mainly is trapping sediment, while the function of a train of check dams comprising dozens of or over hundreds of check dams in a gully encompasses controlling bed incision and reducing erosion energy. A formula was proposed to calculate the potential energy of bank failure and slope failure in a gully, which essentially constitutes the erosion energy. The erosion energy increases when gully incision occurs, which is induced by the incision of the Yellow River and its tributaries on the Loess Plateau. Sediment deposition in many gullies due to construction of check dams reduces the erosion energy to almost zero, which in turn greatly reduces soil erosion and sediment yield. Construction of check dams promotes vegetation development. The vegetation-erosion dynamics model was used to study the effect of check dams on vegetation development. Simulation results show that reforestation without check dam construction might result in an increase of vegetation cover in the first ten years and then a drop of vegetation cover to less than 10% in the later years. The check dams provide a foundation for vegetation development.Zhaoyin Wang Zuyu Chen Shu Yu Qiang Zhang Yu Wang Jianwei Hao 2021International Journal of Sediment Research2021,36,5:3
12Study of risk acceptance criteria for dams显示文摘This paper discusses the methods of establishing risk criteria for dams and reviews the application of dam risk criteria for individuals and societies in different countries or districts.Given the conditions in China and considering the public safety and acceptance of dam risk, historical dam break data and current design standards, individual and societal risk criteria for dams are proposed. The tolerable dam risk criteria for individuals should be set to 10-5–10-7 per annum based on project scale, for example, approximately 1.0×10-7 per annum, which corresponds to a reliability index of 4.2 based on a 100-year lifespan for a first-class or large project. The societal limit for risk tolerance for dams should be set to approximately 10-3–10-5 per annum, corresponding to the fatality range from 1 to 100 and be horizontally extended to 1000,and F-N curves are proposed. It was also found that the reliability indices of Chinese Standard(GB 50199-2013)and Eurocode1(2002)are different, but they have the same level of safety measured by the annual probability of failure. The research results have significance for establishing dam risk criteria.LI ShouYi ZHOU XingBo WANG YuJie ZHOU JianPing DU XiaoHu CHEN ZuYu 2015Science China(Technological Sciences)2015,58,7:3

15Sn_(4)P_(3)nanoparticles confined in multilayer graphene sheets as a high-performance anode material for potassium-ion batteries显示文摘Phosphorus-based anodes are highly promising for potassium-ion batteries(PIBs)because of their large theoretical capacities.Nevertheless, the inferior potassium storage properties caused by the poor electronic conductivity, easy self-aggregation,and huge volumetric changes upon cycling process restrain their practical applications. Now we impregnate Sn_(4)P_(3)nanoparticles within multilayer graphene sheets(Sn_(4)P_(3)/MGS)as the anode material for PIBs,greatly improving its potassium storage performance.Specifically, the graphene sheets can efficiently suppress the aggregation of Sn_(4)P_(3)nanoparticles,enhance the electronic conductivity, and sustain the structural integrity. In addition, plenty of Sn_(4)P_(3)nanoparticles impregnated in MGS offer a large accessible area for the electrolyte, which decreases the diffusion distance for K^(+)and electrons upon K^(+)insertion/extraction,resulting in an improved rate capability.Consequently, the optimized Sn_(4)P_(3)/MGS containing 80 wt%Sn_(4)P_(3)(Sn_(4)P_(3)/MGS-80)exhibits a high reversible capacity of 378.2 and 260.2 m Ah g;at 0.1 and 1 A g^(-1),respectively,and still delivers a large capacity retention of 76.6%after the 1000th cycle at 0.5 A g^(-1).Yichen Du Zuyue Yi Bingbing Chen Jingyi Xu Zhuangzhuang Zhang Jianchun Bao Xiaosi Zhou 2022Journal of Energy Chemistry2022,31,3:2
16Numerical study on structure of meso-β scale rainstorm system during IOP523 of HUAMEX显示文摘One of the scientific goals of HUAMEX (Torrential Rainfall Experiment over Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait and Adjacent Area), a special project in the National '863' Scientific Project, is to reveal meso-β scale structure of heavy rainfall. However, limited by the observational instruments, the resolution of the data attained from the outfield scientific observation network cannot reveal the meso-β scale structure. A 36-h numerical simulation of heavy rainfall case from May 23 to May 24, 1998 during IOP523 of HUAMEX was performed by the mesoscale numerical model of PSU/NCAR MM5, and the meso-p scale structure of con-vective system was examined based on the model output in this note. The results point out that the meso-β scale features of the heavy rainfall are clear considerably at low, middle and upper levels, respectively. There is a strong ageostrophic feature between the geopotential height field and the wind field on the upper level. 19Inhibitory effect of parvovirus H-1 on the formation of colonies of human hepatoma cell line in vitro and its tumors in nude mice显示文摘The inhibitory effect of parvovirus H-1 on the colonyforming ability in vitro of QGY-7703, a cultured human hepatoma cell line, and on the formation and growth of its tumors in nude mice was studied. With higher multiplicity of infection (MOI) of H-1 given, survival of the QGY-7703 cells was found to be decreased. H-1 DNA amplification level at 30 h postinfection(p.i.) was detected to be 7.4 times higher than that at 2 h by dispersed cells assay, while the cells were delayed to enter into S phase.Plaques were formed in the indicator cells (new-born human kidney cell line, NBK) by progeny H-1 virus particles released from the infected QGY-7703 cells by infectious cell center assay. The formation of tumors in nude mice by QGY-7703 cells which were injected s c at 2 h postinfection was observed to be prevented in 2 groups with given MOI 25 and 50. The tumor growth of MOI 10 group occurred at a lower exponential rate than that of control, after a 20 d latent period. It was evident that parvovirus H-1 exhibited a direct inhibitory effect on the formation and growth of human hepatoma cells in vivo as well as in vitro.YAN SHANGJUN CHENGWU MA XIANHUA CHEN SHANHONG WAN ZUYU LUO(Physiology and Biophysics Department, Fudan University,Shanghai 200433, China) 1994Cell Research1994,4,1:1
