1Subordinacy theory for extended CMV matrices显示文摘We develop subordinacy theory for extended Cantero-Moral-Velázquez(CMV) matrices,i.e.,we provide explicit supports for the singular and absolutely continuous parts of the canonical spectral measure associated with a given extended CMV matrix in terms of the presence or absence of subordinate solutions to the generalized eigenvalue equation. Some corollaries and applications of this result are described as well.Shuzheng Guo David Damanik Darren C.Ong 2022Science China Mathematics2022,65,3:1
2Removal of sodium diclofenac from aqueous solutions by rice hull biochar显示文摘Diclofenac is an ecotoxic pharmaceutical compound affecting both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems even at low concentrations. In this study, batch adsorption experiments were conducted to remove sodium diclofenac(SD)from aqueous solutions using rice hull biochar(RHB)adsorbents.Higher SD removals were obtained with increasing initial SD concentration,RHB dosage, contact time, and decreasing initial pH.Isotherm studies revealed that Langmuir isotherm best fitted the experimental data with the highest coefficient of determination for both pH 2(R2=0.9827)and pH 7(R2=0.9460).For kinetic studies, the pseudo second-order model gave R2=0.9999 for both pH 2 and pH 7.SD removals reached up to 97%at pH 2 and up to 80%at pH 7.Higher SD removals were achieved at solution pH lower than the adsorbent pHpzc since electrostatic repulsion was eliminated.Fourier-transform infrared analysis showed the major involvement of C=O in the adsorption process. This study demonstrated the potential of using agricultural residues such as rice hulls for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with pharmaceutical compounds.Judilyn QFilipinas Kim Katrina PRivera Dennis C.Ong Sheila Mae BPingul‑Ong Ralf Ruffel MAbarca Mark Daniel G.de Luna 2021Biochar2021,3,2:1

4Extract of Codiaeum luzonicum Merr. overcomes multidrug resistance in human colon cancer cells by modulating P-glycoprotein显示文摘Objective:To investigate anti-multidrug resistance(MDR)activity and safety of the bioactive fraction(CL11)from Codiaeum luzonicum crude leaf extract. Methods:Cytotoxic activity of CL11 against MDR and nonresistant colon cancer cells was assessed using MTT assay.Mode of cell death was investigated by annexin V-propidium iodide staining,TUNEL,and JC-1 assays. To examine mechanism of action, the effect on the expression and function of the MDR-implicated protein P-glycoprotein was tested using Western blotting and calcein assay,respectively.Results:CL11 had an EC50 of 0.18,1.03 and 38.52µg/mL against HCT-15,HCT-15/Dox and HCT116,respectively.Cytotoxicity was mediated by inhibition of P-glycoprotein function and expression. The mode of cell death involved mitochondrial membrane depolarization and was mostly non-apoptotic at EC50 concentrations against HCT-15 and HCT-15/Dox.Conclusions:Fraction CL11 of Codiaeum luzonicum induces nonapoptotic cell death in MDR cancer cells by overcoming MDR through inhibition of P-glycoprotein expression and function.Regina Joyce E.Ferrer Marc Justin C.Ong Sonia D.Jacinto 2022Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2022,12,9:0
5Otologic and vestibular symptoms in COVID-19:A scoping review显示文摘Background:Otologic and vestibular symptoms have been seen in patients confirmed to have COVID-19 disease.Further discussion of these symptoms may provide insight into short-and long-term management for these patients. Objective:The aim of this review was to describe the otologic and vestibular symptoms that present in patients with COVID-19.The primary outcomes of this review were onset, duration and clinical outcomes of these symptoms.Sources of Evidence:Pub Med,APAMed Central,Herdin,CINAHL,Scopus,Springer Link,ProQuest Coronavirus Research Database, and Google Scholar were searched for the articles to be included.Eligibility Criteria:Studies included were those involving adult patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who experienced hearing loss, ear pain, ear discharge, otitis media, vertigo,or tinnitus.Studies were eligible for inclusion if there was a description of the otologic dysfunction, specifically onset, duration,or clinical outcomes. Results:The majority of patients who experienced hearing loss(68%),tinnitus(88%),vertigo/dizziness(30%),ear pain(8%),and discharge(100%)did so within a month of experiencing the typical symptoms of COVID-19.A majority also experienced complete resolution of their symptoms within 2 weeks.Standard treatment for COVID-19 was usually provided but when specific diagnoses are made for these symptoms(e.g.,sudden sensorineural hearing loss, otitis media, vestibular neuritis),they are treated in the same manner as one would for non-COVID-19 cases,in addition to the management for COVID-19.In certain cases, there may be a need for additional work-up to rule out other causes. Conclusions:Otologic and vestibular symptoms were present in COVID-19 patients, majority as part of the systemic nature of the disease. The onset, duration, and course were consistent with the natural history of a systemic viral infection.COVID-19 should be considered in any patient with a new-onset hearing loss, tinnitus,or vertigo/dizziness,even in the absence of infectious or respiratory symptoms.Kimberly Mae C.Ong Teresa Luisa G.Cruz 2022World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2022,8,4:0
