The thermo-cycle experiments were conducted by using Gleeble 2000 thermo-dynamic test machine for finding the appropriate composition. The experimental results showed that chemical composition had a significant effect on retained austenite, and the appropriate compositions were determined for commercial production of TRIP steels. | Y. | 5 | Effect of a High Magnetic Field on the Shape of the γ' Precipitates in Cast Nickel-based Superalloy K52显示文摘The shape change of the γ' precipitates of cast Ni-based superalloy K52 after aging treatment under a high magnetic field was investigated. The results show that duplex γ' precipitates are present in the γ' matrix after aging treatment with or without the magnetic field. One is the coarse particles with average size of 500 nm; the other is fine spherical γ' precipitates with average of 100 nm in diameter. The application of a 10T magnetic field only results in the shape of the coarse γ' particles changing from spherical to cuboidal when the alloys subjected to the same heat treatments. This shape change was mainly discussed based on the strain energy increase caused by the difference in magnetostriction between the γ' matrix and γ' precipitates. The fine γ' particles still keep spherical. Further TEM observations shows that a number of γ' particles in nano-scale precipitate in the coarse γ' particles in the specimens treated without the magnetic field. | 7 | Census of Kuiper Comets-the TAOS Project显示文摘Cometary nuclei, the remnant icy bodies of planet formation, located at the outer edge of the solar system, are relatively poorly studied because of their small sizes and thus faintness. Thus far more than a hundred large members (size about 100 km) of this cometary population in the Kuiper belt have been identified. Smaller bodies (10 km) are much too faint to image directly and their number so far can only be extrapolated on theoretical grounds. The Taiwan-America Occultation Survey (TAOS) will conduct a census of the number of Kuiper belt objects down to a few km size by monitoring chance stellar occultations by these cometary nuclei. We will set up an array of small (50cm), wide-field (f/1 9) telescopes, each equipped with a 2K squared CCD camera, along a 7 km baseline in central Taiwan at an elevation above ~ 3000 m. The robot telescopes will operate in a coincidence mode, so the sequence and timing of any candidate occultation event can be recorded and distinguished against a false detection. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the National Central University, and the Academia Sinica, will each contribute one telescope system. Researchers from an international variety of institutes are also participating in the project. Our experiment provides the only means to study the cometary population in the small-sized end of the distrbution. A great number of scientific byproducts, notably variable stars, will also derive from the huge TAOS database, some 10, 000 giga-bytes worth of photometrical measuremements per year. | Wen Ping ChenOther TAOS team members: C. | 13 | Multimolecular complex of Par-4 and E2F1 binding to Smac promoter contributes to glutamate-induced apoptosis in human-bone mesenchymal stem cells显示文摘Neural cells undergo glutamate-induced apoptosis in ischaemic brain tissue,in which prostate apoptosis response-4 gene (Par-4)is involved.Human-bone mesenehymal stem cells can be utilized as an effective therapy for ischemic brain injury.In this study,we found that glutamate could induce apoptosis in human-bone mesenehymal stem cells,accompanied by increased expression of Par-4 gene and Smac release from mitochondria.Repressing Par-4 expression attenuated the glutamate-induced apoptosis.Both Par-4 protein and E2F1 protein could bind to E2F1-binding BS3 site on Smac promoter and participated in the formation of a pro- teins-DNA complex.Moreover,in the eomplex,E2F1,not Par-4,was found to be directly bound to the Smac promoter,suggesting that Par-4 exerted indireetly its transcriptional control on the Smac gene though interacting with E2F1.Expression of full-length Par-4 in human-bone mesenchymal cells resulted in increased activity of the Smac promoter.In addition,the indirect transcripional regula- tion of Par-4 on Smac depended on its COOH terminus-mediated interaction between Par-4 and E2F1.We conclude that the forma- tion of proteins-DNA complex,containing Par-4 protein,E2F1 protein and the Smac promoter,contributes to the pro-apoptotic effect on glutamate-treated human-bone mesenchymal stem cells. | Lu, C. | 17 | Molecular genetics of ependymoma显示文摘Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer death in children,with ependymoma being the third most common and posing a significant clinical burden.Its mechanism of pathogenesis,reliable prognostic indicators,and effective treatments other than surgical resection have all remained elusive.Until recently,ependymoma research was hindered by the small number of tumors available for study,low resolution of cytogenetic techniques,and lack of cell lines and animal models.Ependymoma heterogeneity,which manifests as variations in tumor location,patient age,histological grade,and clinical behavior,together with the observation of a balanced genomic profile in up to 50% of cases,presents additional challenges in understanding the development and progression of this disease.Despite these difficulties,we have made significant headway in the past decade in identifying the genetic alterations and pathways involved in ependymoma tumorigenesis through collaborative efforts and the application of microarray-based genetic(copy number) and transcriptome profiling platforms.Genetic characterization of ependymoma unraveled distinct mRNA-defined subclasses and led to the identification of radial glial cells as its cell type of origin.This review summarizes our current knowledge in the molecular genetics of ependymoma and proposes future research directions necessary to further advance this field. | Yuan Yao Stephen C.
