| 1 | Acute liver injury induced by weight-loss herbal supplements显示文摘We report three cases of patients with acute liver injury induced by weight-loss herbal supplements. One patient took Hydroxycut while the other two took Herbalife supplements. Liver biopsies for all patients dem onstrated f indings consistent with drug-induced acute liver injury. To our knowledge, we are the fi rst instit ute to report acute liver injury from both of these two typ es of weight-loss herbal supplements together as a case series. | 2 | Seasonal variation and chemical composition of particulate matter: A study by XPS, ICP-AES and sequential microanalysis using Raman with SEM/EDS显示文摘During the winter period(January–March 2016), the total suspended particles(TSP) and particulate matter smaller than 2.5 μm(PM_(2.5)) were characterized by the application of various analytical techniques in four zones of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey in Mexico. To evaluate the seasonal variation of some elements in the particulate matter, the results of this study were compared with those obtained during the summer season(July–September 2015). The speciation of the C_(1s) signal by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the contribution of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons as the main components in both seasons. Conversely, carboxylic groups associated with biogenic emissions were detected only in winter. The percentages of SO_4^(2-) ions were lower in winter, possibly caused by the decrease in the solar radiation, and relative humidity recorded. The results of the ICP analysis revealed that Fe, Zn and Cu were the most abundant metals in both TSP and PM_(2.5) in the two seasons. There were significant seasonal variations for concentrations of As, Ni and Zn in the urban area and for Fe, As, Cd, Ni and Zn in the industrial zone. This was attributed to the greater burning of fuels as well as to an increase in vehicular traffic, the effect of thermal inversion and changes in some meteorological parameters. | 5 | Outcome in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding after capsule endoscopy显示文摘AIM: To investigate the clinical impact of capsule endoscopy(CE) after an obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGIB) episode, focusing on diagnostic work-up, followup and predictive factors of rebleeding. METHODS: Patients who were referred to Hospital del Mar(Barcelona, Spain) between 2007 and 2009 for OGIB who underwent a CE were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic data, current treatment with non-steroid antiinflammtory drugs or anticoagulant drugs, hemoglobin levels, transfusion requirements, previous diagnostic tests for the bleeding episode, as well as CE findings(significant or non-significant), work-up and patient out-comes were analyzed from electronic charts. Variables were compared by χ 2 analysis and Student t test. Risk factors of rebleeding were assessed by Log-rank test, Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression model. RESULTS: There were 105 patients [45.7% women, median age of 72 years old(interquartile range 56-79)] and a median follow-up of 326 d(interquartile range 123-641) included in this study. The overall diagnostic yield of CE was 58.1%(55.2% and 63.2%, for patients with occult OGIB and overt OGIB, respectively). In 73 patients(69.5%), OGIB was resolved. Multivariate analysis showed that hemoglobin levels lower than 8 g/dL at diagnosis [hazard ratios(HR) = 2.7, 95%CI: 1.9-6.3], patients aged 70 years and above(HR = 2.1, 95%CI: 1.2-6.1) and significant findings in CE(HR = 2.4, 95%CI: 1.1-5.8) were independent predictors of rebleeding.
