| 1 | Epidemiology of electrical burns and its impact on quality of life-the developing world scenario显示文摘BACKGROUND Electrical burns are devastating injuries and can cause deep burns with significant morbidity and delayed sequelae.Epidemiological data regarding the etiology, socioeconomic differences and geographic variation are necessary to assess the disease burden and plan an effective preventive strategy. These severe injuries often lead to amputations and thus hamper quality of life in the long term AIM To identify the population at maximum risk of sustaining electrical burns. We also studied the impact of electrical burns on these patients in terms of quality of life as well as return to work.METHODS The study was conducted at a tertiary referral teaching hospital over a period of eighteen months. All patients with a history of sustaining electrical burns and satisfying the inclusion criteria were included in the study. All relevant epidemiological parameters and treatment details were recorded. The patients were subsequently followed up at 3 mo,6 mo and 9 mo.The standardized Brief Version of the Burn Specic Health Scale(BSHS-B)was adopted to assess quality of life.Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS statistics(version 22.0).A P value of<0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS A total of 103 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 31.83 years(range 18-75 years).A significant majority(91.3%)of patients were male. The mean total body surface area(TBSA)in these patients was 21.1%.In most of the patients(67%),the injury was occupation-related.High voltage injuries were implicated in 72.8%of patients.Among the 75 high voltage burn patients,31(41%)required amputation. The mean number of surgeries the patients underwent in hospital was 2.03(range 1 to 4).The quality of life parameters amongst the patients sustaining high voltage electrical burns were poorer when compared to low voltage injuries at all follow-up intervals across nine domains. In eight of these domains, the difference was statistically significant.Similarly, the scores among the amputees were poorer when compared to non-amputees.The difference was statistically significant in six domains.CONCLUSION Electrical burns remain a problem in the developing world. Most injuries are occupation-related.The quality of life in patients with high voltage burns and amputees remains poor.Work resumption was almost impossible for amputees. These patients could not regain pre-injury status.Steps should be taken to create awareness and to implement an effective preventive strategy to safeguard against electrical injuries. | Giriraj Gandhi Atul Parashar Ramesh K Sharma | 2022 | World Journal of Critical Care Medicine2022,11,1: | 3 |
| 2 | Review on the phosphate-based conversion coatings of magnesium and its alloys显示文摘Magnesium(Mg)and its alloys are lightweight as well as biocompatible and possess a high strength-to-weight ratio, making them suitable for many industries, including aerospace, automobile, and medical. The major challenge is their high susceptibility to corrosion, thereby limiting their usability. The considerably lower reduction potential of Mg compared to other metals makes it vulnerable to galvanic coupling. The oxide layer on Mg offers little corrosion resistance because of its high porosity, inhomogeneity, and fragility.Chemical conversion coatings(CCs)belong to a distinct class because of underlying chemical reactions, which are fundamentally different from other types of coating.Typically,a CC acts as an intermediate sandwich layer between the base metal and an aesthetic paint.Although chromate CCs offer superior performance compared to phosphate CCs,yet still they release carcinogenic hexavalent chromium ions(Cr^(6+));therefore,their use is prohibited in most European nations under the Registration,Evaluation,Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals legislation framework.Phosphate-based CCs are a cost-effective and environment-friendly alternative.Accordingly, this review primarily focuses on different types of phosphate-based CCs,such as zinc, calcium,Mg,vanadium, manganese, and permanganate. It discusses their mechanisms, current status, pretreatment practices, and the influence of various parameters-such as pH,temperature, immersion time, and bath composition-on the coating performance. Some challenges associated with phosphate CCs and future research directions are also elaborated. | Debasis Saran Atul Kumar Sivaiah Bathula David Klaumünzer Kisor K Sahu | 2022 | International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2022,29,7: | 2 |

| 16 | Size-specific dose estimates: Localizer or transverse abdominal computed tomography images?显示文摘AIM: To investigate effect of body dimensions obtained from localizer radiograph and transverse abdominal computed tomography(CT) images on Size Specific Dose Estimate. METHODS: This study was approved by Institutional Review Board and was compliant with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Fifty patients with abdominal CT examinations(58 ± 13 years, Male: Female 28:22) were included in this study. Anteriorposterior(AP) and lateral(Lat) diameters were measured at 5 cm intervals from the CT exam localizer radiograph(simple X-ray image acquired for planning the CT exam before starting the scan) and transverse CT images. Average of measured AP and Lat diameters, as well as maximum, minimum and mid location AP and Lat were measured on both image sets. In addition, off centering of patients from the gantry iso-center was calculated from the localizers. Conversion factors from American Association of Physicists in Medicine(AAPM) report 204 were obtained for AP, Lat, AP + Lat, and effective diameter(√ AP * Lat) to determine size specificdose estimate(SSDE) from the CT dose index volume(CTDIvol) recorded from the dose reports. Data were analyzed using SPSS v19. RESULTS: Total number of 5376 measurements was done. In some patients entire body circumference was not covered on either projection radiograph or transverse CT images; hence accurate measurement of AP and Lat diameters was not possible in 11%(278/2488) of locations. Forty one patients were off-centered with mean of 1.9 ± 1.8 cm(range: 0.4-7 cm). Conversion factors for attained diameters were not listed on AAPM look-up tables in 3%(80/2488) of measurements. SSDE values were significantly different compared to CTDIvol, ranging from 32% lower to 74% greater than CTDIvol. CONCLUSION: There is underestimation and overestimation of dose comparing SSDE values to CTDIvol. Localizer radiographs are associated with overestimation of patient size and therefore underestimation of SSDE. | Sarvenaz Pourjabbar Sarabjeet Singh Atul Padole Akshay Saini Michael A Blake Mannudeep K Kalra | 2014 | World Journal of Radiology2014,6,5: | 1 |
