| 1 | Nitrogen(N) metabolism related enzyme activities,cell uitrastructure and nutrient contents as affected by N level and barley genotype显示文摘Development of the new crop cultivars with high yield under low nitrogen(N) input is a fundamental approach to enhance agricultural sustainability,which is dependent on the exploitation of the elite germplasm.In the present study,four barley genotypes(two Tibetan wild and two cultivated),differing in N use efficiency(NUE),were characterized for their physiological and biochemical responses to different N levels.Higher N levels significantly increased the contents of other essential nutrients(P,K,Ca,Fe,Cu and Mn),and the increase was more obvious for the N-efficient genotypes(ZD9 and XZ149).The observation of ultrastructure showed that chloroplast structure was severely damaged under low nitrogen,and the two high N efficient genotypes were relatively less affected.The activities of the five N metabolism related enzymes,i.e.,nitrate reductase(NR),glutamine synthetase(GS),nitrite reductase(NiR),glutamate synthase(GOGAT) and glutamate dehydrogenase(GDH) all showed the substantial increase with the increased N level in the culture medium.However the increased extent differed among the four genotypes,with the two N efficient genotypes showing more increase in comparison with the other two genotypes with relative N inefficiency(HXRL and XZ56).The current findings showed that a huge difference exists in low N tolerance among barley genotypes,and improvement of some physiological traits(such as enzymes) could be helpful for increasing N utilization efficiency. | Jawad Munawar Shah Syed Asad Hussain Bukhari ZENG Jian-bin QUAN Xiao-yan Essa Ali Noor Muhammad ZHANG Guo-ping | 2017 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2017,16,1: | 4 |

| 9 | In vitro antimicrobial and synergistic effect of essential oil from the red macroalgae Centroceras clavulatum (C. Agardh) Montagne with conventional antibiotics显示文摘Objective:To study the chemical profile,antimicrobial properties,and synergistic effect with known antibiotics of essential oil extracted from the marine red macroalgae Centroceras clavulatum(C.Agardh)Montagne,collected in Morocco.Methods:The chemical composition of the oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.The oil was evaluated for antibacterial(Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Escherichia coli,Bacillus subtilis,Micrococcus luteus,Staphylococcus aureus,and Klebsiella pneumoniae),and antifungal activity(Candida albicans,Candida glabrata,Candida krusei,and Candida parapsilosis),by the disc diffusion method.The minimum inhibitory and minimum microbicidal concentrations of the oil were determined,as well as the synergistic effects of its application combined with the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and fluconazole,by the checkerboard method.Results:Thirty molecules were identified in the essential oil,comprising 96.27%of the total oil composition.Monoterpenes such as carvacrol(36.06%)were the most abundant compounds,followed by caryophyllene(14.67%),endo-borneol(9.04%),pyroterebic acid(3.23%)and caryophyllene oxide(3.13%).The oil exhibited a moderate antimicrobial activity with inhibition zone diameters ranging from 9.0 to 15.0 mm.The minimum inhibitory concentration values varied between 0.9 and 14.7 mg/mL,and Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli were the more sensitive bacteria with 0.9 and 1.9 mg/mL,respectively.The minimum microbicidal concentration values ranged from 0.4 to 14.7 mg/mL.A significant synergic action was observed when the oil was applied in combination with ciprofloxacin and fluconazole,with fractional inhibitory concentration index values ranging from 0.31 to 0.50.Synergy was found in 80%of the combinations and a 2 to 16-fold reduction of antibiotics MIC was observed.Conclusions:Our findings suggest that the essential oil of Centroceras clavulatum should be further appraised for its potential use in the management of multi-drug resistant microorganisms,with the purpose to restore the activity of standard antimicrobial drugs. | Ahmed Nafis Fatima El Khalloufi Asmae Aknaf Brahim Oudra Najat Marraiki Sarah Al-Rashed Abdallah MElgorban Asad Syed Lahcen Hassani Luísa Custódio | 2021 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2021,11,9: | 0 |
| 10 | Mercury removal from aqueous solution using petal-like MoS_(2) nanosheets显示文摘Recently,different nanomaterial-based adsorbents have received greater attention for the removal of environmental pollutants,specifically heavy metals from aqueous media.In this work,we synthesized few-layered MoS2 nanosheets via a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method and utilized them as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of mercury from aqueous media.The synthesized MoS2 nanosheets showed petal-like morphology as confirmed by scanning electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic analysis.The average thickness of the nanosheets is found to be about 57 nm.Possessing high stability and negative zeta potential makes this material suitable for efficient adsorption of mercury from aqueous media.The adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent was investigated as a function of pH,contact time and adsorbent dose.The kinetics of adsorption and reusability potential of the adsorbent were also performed.A pseudo-second-order kinetics for mercury adsorption was observed.As prepared MoS_(2) nanosheets showed 93%mercury removal efficiency,whereas regenerated adsorbent showed 91%and 79%removal efficiency in the respective 2^(nd) and 3^(rd) cycles.The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was found to be 289 mg/g at room temperature. | Ragini Pirarath Palani Shivashanmugam Asad Syed Abdallah MElgorban Sambandam Anandan Muthupandian Ashokkumar | 2021 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2021,15,1: | 0 |
| 11 | Characterization of lauryl betaine foam in the Hele-Shaw cell at high foam qualities(80%-98%)显示文摘Lauryl betaine(LB)as an amphoteric surfactant carries both positive and negative charges and should be able to generate stable foam through electrostatic interaction with nanoparticles and co-surfactants.However,no previous attempts have been made to investigate the influence of nanoparticles and other co-surfactants on the stability and apparent viscosity of LBstabilized foam.In this study,a thorough investigation on the influence of silicon dioxide(SiO2)nanoparticles,alpha olefin sulfonate(AOS)and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS),on foam stability and apparent viscosity was carried out.The experiments were conducted with the 2D Hele-Shaw cell at high foam qualities(80%-98%).Influence of AOS on the interaction between the LB foam and oil was also investigated.Results showed that the SiO2-LB foam apparent viscosity decreased with increasing surfactant concentration from 0.1 wt%to 0.3 wt%.0.1 wt%SiO2 was the optimum concentration and increased the 0.1 wt%LB foam stability by 108.65%at 96%foam quality.In the presence of co-surfactants,the most stable foam,with the highest apparent viscosity,was generated by AOS/LB solution at a ratio of 9:1.The emulsified crude oil did not imbibe into AOS-LB foam lamellae.Instead,oil was redirected into the plateau borders where the accumulated oil drops delayed the rate of film thinning,bubble coalescence and coarsening. | Asad Hassan Syed Nurudeen Yekeen Eswaran Padmanabhan Ahmad Kamal Idris Dzeti Farhah Mohshim | 2020 | Petroleum Science2020,17,6: | 0 |

| 17 | Development of a Bias Compensating Q-Learning Controller for a Multi-Zone HVAC Facility显示文摘We present the development of a bias compensating reinforcement learning(RL)algorithm that optimizes thermal comfort(by minimizing tracking error)and control utilization(by penalizing setpoint deviations)in a multi-zone heating,ventilation,and air-conditioning(HVAC)lab facility subject to unmeasurable disturbances and unknown dynamics.It is shown that the presence of unmeasurable disturbance results in an inconsistent learning equation in traditional RL controllers leading to parameter estimation bias(even with integral action support),and in the extreme case,the divergence of the learning algorithm.We demonstrate this issue by applying the popular Q-learning algorithm to linear quadratic regulation(LQR)of a multi-zone HVAC environment and showing that,even with integral support,the algorithm exhibits bias issue during the learning phase when the HVAC disturbance is unmeasurable due to unknown heat gains,occupancy variations,light sources,and outside weather changes.To address this difficulty,we present a bias compensating learning equation that learns a lumped bias term as a result of disturbances(and possibly other sources)in conjunction with the optimal control parameters.Experimental results show that the proposed scheme not only recovers the bias-free optimal control parameters but it does so without explicitly learning the dynamic model or estimating the disturbances,demonstrating the effectiveness of the algorithm in addressing the above challenges. | Syed Ali Asad Rizvi Amanda J.Pertzborn Zongli Lin | 2023 | IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2023,10,8: | 0 |
| 18 | Parametic Model for Optimization of Battery Capacity and Power Transmitters of On-line Electric Vehicles in Closed/Open Environments显示文摘An on-line electric vehicle(OLEV)uses a wireless charging phenomenon,in which power transmitters are installed beneath the road and the OLEV’s battery is charged remotely.This paper deals with the optimization of two key economic and design parameters,i.e.,the size of the battery and the power transmitters allocation.A complete model configuration of the OLEV system,including the vehicle design and power transmitter,is implemented using MATLAB/Simulink.The battery’s state of charge(SOC)rises and drops according to the vehicle’s velocity and power collection and consumption.The mixed integer programming(MIP)model is used for cost calculation.Therefore,with the help of the SOC graph and MIP model,the battery size and the number of power transmitters,along with their placements,are optimized.The proposed model is applicable to both closed and open environments as it accepts both regulated and deregulated velocities.Two test cases are performed for this purpose.The first test case deals with regulated velocity for which we have applied the KAIST campus OLEV’s velocity along with its 13 kWh battery size and 4 power transmitters,and then applied the suggested solution with the same velocity and route i.e.,8 power transmitters with shorter lengths and reduced battery size(3.25 kWh;one-fourth of the first case).SOC is found within limits at the end of the route,saving$1600 and validating the proposed model in this paper.For the second test case,we use deregulated velocity and optimize both parameters,using the same approach. | Fatima Nisar Syed Haider Imtiaz Alam Asad Waqar Toqeer Ahmed Mudassar Usman | 2023 | CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems2023,9,1: | 0 |

| 20 | A modelling method for large-scale open spaces orientated toward coordinated control of multiple air-terminal units显示文摘The temperature distribution is always assumed to be homogeneous in a traditional singleinput-single-output(SISO)air conditioning control strategy.However,the airflow inside is more complicated and unpredictable.This study proposes a zonal temperature control strategy with a thermal coupling effect integrated for air-conditioned large-scale open spaces.The target space was split into several subzones based on the minimum controllable air terminal units in the proposed method,and each zone can be controlled to its own set-point while considering the thermal coupling effect from its adjacent zones.A numerical method resorting to computational fluid dynamics was presented to obtain the heat transfer coefficients(HTCs)under different air supply scenarios.The relationship between heat transfer coefficient and zonal temperature difference was linearized.Thus,currently available zonal models in popular software can be used to simulate the dynamic response of temperatures in large-scale indoor open spaces.Case studies showed that the introduction of HTCs across the adjacent zones was capable of enhancing the precision of temperature control of large-scale open spaces.It could satisfy the temperature requirements of different zones,improve thermal comfort and at least 11%of energy saving can be achieved by comparing with the conventional control strategy. | Pei Zhou Songjie Wang Jintao Zhou Syed Asad Hussain Xiaoping Liu Jiajia Gao Gongsheng Huang | 2023 | Building Simulation2023,16,2: | 0 |
