1Leukocyte adhesion defect:Where do we stand circa 2019?显示文摘Migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes from bloodstream to the site of inflammation is an important event required for surveillance of foreign antigens. This trafficking of leukocytes from bloodstream to the tissue occurs in several distinct steps and involves several adhesion molecules.Defect in adhesion of leukocytes to vascular endothelium affecting their subsequent migration to extravascular space gives rise to a group of rare primary immunodeficiency diseases(PIDs)known as Leukocyte Adhesion Defects(LAD).Till date, four classes of LAD are discovered with LAD I being the most common form.LAD I is caused by loss of function of common chain, cluster of differentiation(CD)18 of β2 integrin family. These patients suffer from life-threatening bacterial infections and in its severe form death usually occurs in childhood without bone marrow transplantation.LAD II results from a general defect in fucose metabolism. These patients suffer from less severe bacterial infections and have growth and mental retardation.Bombay blood group phenotype is also observed in these patients.LAD III is caused by abnormal integrin activation.LAD III patients suffer from severe bacterial and fungal infections.Patients frequently show delayed detachment of umbilical cord, impaired wound healing and increased tendency to bleed.LAD IV is the most recently described class. It is caused by defects in β2 and α4β1 integrins which impairs lymphocyte adhesion.LAD IV patients have monogenic defect in cystic-fibrosis-transmembraneconductance-regulator(CFTR)gene,resulting in cystic fibrosis.Pathophysiology and genetic etiology of all LAD syndromes are discussed in detail in this paper.Jhumki Das Avinash Sharma Ankur Jindal Vaishali Aggarwal Amit Rawat 2020Genes & Diseases2020,7,1:2

3Supertransport of excitons in atomically thin organic semiconductors at the 2D quantum limit显示文摘Long-range and fast transport of coherent excitons is important for the development of high-speed excitonic circuits and quantum computing applications. However, most of these coherent excitons have only been observed in some low-dimensional semiconductors when coupled with cavities,as there are large inhomogeneous broadening and dephasing effects on the transport of excitons in their native states in materials. Here,by confining coherent excitons at the 2D quantum limit,we first observed molecular aggregation-enabled‘supertransport’of excitons in atomically thin two-dimensional(2D)organic semiconductors between coherent states, with a measured high effective exciton diffusion coefficient of ~346.9 cm^(2)/s at room temperature. This value is one to several orders of magnitude higher than the values reported for other organic molecular aggregates and low-dimensional inorganic materials.Without coupling to any optical cavities, the monolayer pentacene sample,a very clean 2D quantum system(~1.2 nm thick)with high crystallinity(J-type aggregation)and minimal interfacial states, showed superradiant emission from Frenkel excitons, which was experimentally confirmed by the temperature-dependent photoluminescence(PL)emission, highly enhanced radiative decay rate, significantly narrowed PL peak width and strongly directional in-plane emission. The coherence in monolayer pentacene samples was observed to be delocalised over~135 molecules, which is significantly larger than the values(a few molecules)observed for other organic thin films. In addition, the supertransport of excitons in monolayer pentacene samples showed highly anisotropic behaviour. Our results pave the way for the development of future high-speed excitonic circuits, fast OLEDs,and other optoelectronic devices.Ankur Sharma Linglong Zhang Jonathan O.Tollerud Miheng Dong Yi Zhu Robert Halbich Tobias Vogl Kun Liang Hieu T.Nguyen Fan Wang Shilpa Sanwlani Stuart K.Earl Daniel Macdonald Ping Koy Lam Jeffrey A.Davis Yuerui Lu 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:1
4Tuberculous otitis media eseries of 10 cases显示文摘Background:Tuberculosis(TB)of the middle ear cleft(MEC)is a rare extra-pulmonary manifestation.Signs and symptoms of tuberculous otitis media are indistinguishable from that of non-tuberculous otitis media making early diagnosis difficult. Objectives:To study the clinical presentations, complications and effective diagnostic modalities in tuberculosis of middle ear cleft. Methods:We retrospectively studied 10 patients diagnosed with chronic otitis media, unresponsive to 2 months conventional treatment.Pure tone audiogram,High resolution computed tomography(HRCT)of temporal bone, and AFB staining of ear discharge were done. All patients underwent mastoid surgery.AFB staining and histopathological examination of granulation tissue removed from the middle ear and mastoid were also done. Results:Clinical findings were mastoid swelling, facial palsy and post-aural fistula 3,4&2 patients respectively. All patients had persistent ear discharge and three had vertigo.Hearing loss was of moderate conductive type in five, sensorineural type in three and mixed type in two.HRCT of temporal bone revealed soft tissue density in MEC in 9 and evidence of bone destruction in 6 cases.Diagnosis of TB was confirmed either by(a)demonstration of AFB in ear discharge(4 patients)/tissue removed during surgery(4 patients)or(b)by demonstration of tuberculous granulomas with necrosis on histopathological examination of tissue from MEC(8 patients). Conclusion:Tuberculosis should be suspected in all cases of chronic otitis media unresponsive to conventional treatment particularly in endemic areas.Histopathological examination and AFB staining of tissue removed during mastoid surgery are reliable diagnostic methods.Susan KSebastian Aditya Singhal Ankur Sharma Pankajkumar Doloi 2020Journal of Otology2020,15,3:1

8Exciton dynamics in 2D organic semiconductors显示文摘Two-dimensional(2D)semiconducting materials have been studied extensively for their interesting excitonic and optoelectronic properties arising from strong many-body interactions and quantum confinement at 2D limit. Most of these materials have been inorganic, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, phosphorene, etc.Organic semiconductor materials,on the other hand been investigated for their excellent electrical conductivity and low dielectric coefficients for similar applications in the thin film or bulk material phase. The lack of crystallinity in the thin film and bulk phases has led to ambiguity over the excitonic and electronic/optical band gap characteristics. The recent emergence of 2D organic materials has opened a new domain of high crystallinity and controlled morphology, allowing for the study of low-lying excitonic states and optoelectronic properties. They have been demonstrated to have different excitonic properties compared with the Wannier–Mott excitons in inorganic 2D materials. Here we present our recent experimental observations and analysis of 2D organic semiconductor materials. We discuss the role of high-crystalline and morphology-controlled growth of single-crystalline materials and their optoelectronic properties. The report explains the Frenkel(FR)and charge-transfer(CT)excitons and subsequent light emission and absorption properties in organic materials. The true nature of low-lying excitonic states, which arises from the interaction between CT and FR excitons,is experimentally studied and discussed to reveal the electronic band structure. We then discuss the pure FR behaviour we observed in J–type aggregated organic materials leading to coherent superradiant excitonic emissions. The supertransport of excitons within the organic materials, facilitated by their pure FR nature, and the delocalization of excitons over a large number of molecules are also demonstrated. Finally,we discuss the applications and our vision for these organic 2D materials in fast organic light-emitting diodes,high-speed excitonic circuits, quantum computing devices, and other optoelectronic devices.Ankur Sharma Md Mehedi Hasan Yuerui Lu 2022Materials Futures2022,1,4:0
