1Small-world networks of neuroblastoma cells cultured in three-dimensional polymeric scaffolds featuring multi-scale roughness显示文摘Understanding the mechanisms underlying cell-surface interaction is of fundamental importance for the rational design of scaffolds aiming at tissue engineering,tissue repair and neural regeneration applications.Here,we examined patterns of neuroblastoma cells cultured in three-dimensional polymeric scaffolds obtained by two-photon lithography.Because of the intrinsic resolution of the technique,the micrometric cylinders composing the scaffold have a lateral step size of^200 nm,a surface roughness of around 20 nm,and large values of fractal dimension approaching 2.7.We found that cells in the scaffold assemble into separate groups with many elements per group.After cell wiring,we found that resulting networks exhibit high clustering,small path lengths,and small-world characteristics.These values of the topological characteristics of the network can potentially enhance the quality,quantity and density of information transported in the network compared to equivalent random graphs of the same size.This is one of the first direct observations of cells developing into 3D small-world networks in an artificial matrix.Valentina Onesto Angelo Accardo Christophe Vieu Francesco Gentile 2020Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,4:1
2In vitro microglia models:the era of engineered cell microenvironments显示文摘Background:The most widely employed approach by cell biologists to performing in vitro cell culture assays is the one using 2D plastic culture ware systems,which allows reproducibility and ease of use.Moreover,this method is cost-effective.However,in most cases,these flat surfaces lead to the formation of unrealistic 2D cell monolayers,which do not reproduce the complex configuration characteristics of native tissues in terms of dimensionality,rigidity,and topography.For this reason,a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists,working across microengineering and cell biology has started to develop engineered cell microenvironments(Huang et al.,2017)by employing advanced materials and fabrication approaches(Fan et al.,2019)over the last two decades.Depending on the level of resolution of the adopted manufacturing technique,the geometrical features of these structures can reach micrometric or even sub-micrometric dimensions comparable to the ones of cellular somas or cellular filopodia,therefore fostering cell-biomaterial interactions.The developed structures are pivotal for a better investigation of fundamental mechanobiology(Lemma et al.,2019),the optimization of in vitro disease modeling,drug/treatment screening(Gao et al.,2021),and tissue engineering(Mani et al.,2022).Ahmed Sharaf Raissa Timmerman Jeffrey Bajramovic Angelo Accardo 2023Neural Regeneration Research2023,18,8:0
3Right sided diverticulitis in western countries:A review显示文摘BACKGROUND Although the treatment guidelines for left sided diverticulitis are clear,the management of right colonic diverticulitis is not well established.This disease can no longer be ignored due to significant spread throughout Asia.AIM To analyse epidemiology,diagnosis and treatment of right-sided diverticulitis in western countries.METHODS MEDLINE and PubMed searches were performed using the key words 'rightsided diverticulitis','right colon diverticulitis','caecal diverticulitis','ascending colon diverticulitis' and 'caecum diverticula' in order to find relevant articles published until 2021.RESULTS A total of 18 studies with 422 patients were found.Correct diagnosis was made only in 32.2%,mostly intraoperatively or via CT scan.The main reason for misdiagnosis was a suspected acute appendicitis(56.8%).The treatment was a nonoperative management(NOM)in 184 patients(43.6%)and surgical in 238 patients(56.4%),seven of which after NOM failure.Recurrence rate was low(5.45%),similar to eastern studies and inferior to left-sided diverticulitis.Recurrent patients were successfully conservatively retreated in most cases.CONCLUSION The management of right-sided diverticulitis is not well clarified in the western world and no selective guidelines have been considered even if principles are similar to those with left-sided diverticulitis.Wrong diagnosis is one of the most important problems and CT scan seems to be the best imaging modality.NOM offers a safe and effective treatment;surgery should be considered only in cases of complicated diverticulitis or if malignancy cannot be excluded.Further studies are needed to clarify the correct treatment.Angelo Gabriele Epifani Diletta Cassini Roberto Cirocchi Caterina Accardo Francesca Di Candido Massimiliano Ardu Gianandrea Baldazzi 2021World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2021,13,12:0
