| 1 | Functional-trait ecology of the plateau pika Ochotona curzoniae in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau ecosystem显示文摘Understanding a species’functional traits allows for a directed and productive perspective on the role a species plays in nature,and thus its relative importance to conservation planning.The functionaltrait ecology of the plateau pika Ochotona curzoniae is examined to better understand the resilience and sustainability of the high alpine grasslands of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP).The key functional traits of plateau pikas are their abundance and behavior of digging extensive burrow systems.Plateau pikas have been poisoned over a significant part of their original geographic distribution across the QTP,allowing comparison of ecological communities with and without pikas.Nearly all mammalian and avian carnivores,most of which are obligate predators on pikas,have been lost in regions where pikas have been poisoned.Most endemic birds on the QTP nest in pika burrows;when pikas are poisoned,burrows collapse,and these birds are greatly reduced in number.Due to the biopedturbation resulting from their burrows,regional plant species richness is higher in areas with pikas than without.The presence of pika burrows allows higher rates of infiltration during heavy monsoon rains compared to poisoned areas,possibly mitigating runoff and the potential for serious downslope erosion and flooding.Thus,the functional traits of plateau pikas enhance native biodiversity and other important ecosystem functions;these traits are irreplaceable.As plateau pikas are not natural colonizers,active reintroduction programs are needed to restore pikas to areas from which they have been poisoned to restore the important functional ecological traits of pikas. | Andrew T.SMITH BADINGQIUYING Maxwell C.WILSON Brigitte W.HOGAN | 2019 | Integrative Zoology2019,14,1: | 3 |

| 4 | Emergency department patient experience:Same location,same provider,different scores by different survey methods显示文摘BACKGROUND: Recent findings on emergency department (ED) patient experience surveys and concerns for the low response rates challenge the quality and reliability of the survey reports. We assessed the consistency of an ED patient experience survey report and identifi ed the effects of patient demographics on ED patient experiences. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional study at a university-based ED from July to December 2017. We obtained ED patient experience scores from an institutional version (IS) survey and the Press Ganey Associates-distributed survey (PGA). We compared top box scores from the two reports using frequency analysis and performed multivariable logistic regressions to identify associations between IS patient demographics and scores. RESULTS: We obtained 289 PGA and 234 IS responses. The IS reported signifi cant, higher top box scores in doctor-specifi c patient questions compared to PGA (all four P-values < 0.01). Female, Christian and White patients were more likely to give top box scores (OR 3.07, OR 2.22 and OR 2.41, P-value < 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSION: We found significant differences in ED patient experience scores between the IS and PGA surveys. We recommend that healthcare providers consider patient demographic variables when interpreting ED experience score reports. | 14 | Fusion of thermal and RGB images for automated deep learning based crack detection in civil infrastructure显示文摘Research has been continually growing toward the development of image-based structural health monitoring tools that can leverage deep learning models to automate damage detection in civil infrastructure.However,these tools are typically based on RGB images,which work well under ideal lighting conditions,but often have degrading performance in poor and low-light scenes.On the other hand,thermal images,while lacking in crispness of details,do not show the same degradation of performance in changing lighting conditions.The potential to enhance automated damage detection by fusing RGB and thermal images together within a deep learning network has yet to be explored.In this paper,RGB and thermal images are fused in a ResNET-based semantic segmentation model for vision-based inspections.A convolutional neural network is then employed to automatically identify damage defects in concrete.The model uses a thermal and RGB encoder to combine the features detected from both spectrums to improve its performance of the model,and a single decoder to predict the classes.The results suggest that this RGB-thermal fusion network outperforms the RGB-only network in the detection of cracks using the Intersection Over Union(IOU)performance metric.The RGB-thermal fusion model not only detected damage at a higher performance rate,but it also performed much better in differentiating the types of damage. | Quincy G.Alexander Vedhus Hoskere Yasutaka Narazaki Andrew Maxwell Billie F.Spencer Jr | 2022 | AI in Civil Engineering2022,1,1: | 0 |

| 17 | On the horizon:Hedgehog signaling to heal broken bones显示文摘Uncovering the molecular pathways that drive skeletal repair has been an ongoing challenge. Initial efforts have relied on in vitro assays to identify the key signaling pathways that drive cartilage and bone differentiation. While these assays can provide some clues, assessing specific pathways in animal models is critical. Furthermore, definitive proof that a pathway is required for skeletal repair is best provided using genetic tests. Stimulating the Hh(Hedgehog) pathway can promote cartilage and bone differentiation in cell culture assays. In addition, the application of HH protein or various pathway agonists in vivo has a positive influence on bone healing. Until recently, however, genetic proof that the Hh pathway is involved in bone repair has been lacking. Here, we consider both in vitro and in vivo studies that examine the role of Hh in repair and discuss some of the challenges inherent in their interpretation. We also identify needed areas of study considering a new appreciation for the role of cartilage during repair, the variety of cell types that may have differing roles in repair, and the recent availability of powerful lineage tracing techniques.
