Antibacterial activity of calcium hydroxide combined with chitosan solutions and the outcomes on the bond strength of RealSeal sealer to radicular dentin显示文摘The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] combined with chitosan solutions against Enterococcus faecalis-infected root canal dentin and the effect of this new intracanal medicament on the bond strength of RealSeal sealer to radicular dentin. An experimental intracanal medicament was prepared by mixing different concentrations of chitosan solution(25%,50%,and 100%,W/V) to Ca(OH)2 powder.Antibacterial activity was evaluated and the total numbers of colony forming units were determined.Bonding ability of RealSeal sealer to radicular dentin was evaluated using push-out bond strength test.Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison tests. We found that Ca(OH)2 combined with different concentrations of chitosan solutions showed better antibacterial activity than Ca(OH)2 mixed with saline, without significantly affecting the bond strength of RealSeal sealer to radicular dentin(P > 0.05).The findings suggest that Ca(OH)2 combined with chitosan is a promising intracanal medicament and may be effective in endodontic therapy.Shaymaa Elsayed Elsaka Amr Mohamed Elnaghy 2012The Journal of Biomedical Research2012,26,3:1
Hepatic and gastrointestinal disturbances in Egyptian patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019: A multicentre cohort study显示文摘BACKGROUND Various liver and gastrointestinal involvements occur in patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)at variable prevalence. Most studies report mild liver function disturbances correlated with COVID-19 severity, though liver failure is unusual.AIM To study liver and gastrointestinal dysfunctions in Egyptian patients with COVID-19 and their relation to disease outcomes METHODS This multicentre cohort study was conducted on 547 Egyptian patients from April 15,2020 to July 29,2020.Consecutive polymerase chain reaction-confirmed COVID-19 cases were included from four quarantine hospitals affiliated to the Egyptian ministry of health.Demographic information, laboratory characteristics,treatments,fibrosis-4(FIB-4)index,COVID-19 severity, and outcomes were recorded and compared according to the degree of liver enzyme elevation and the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms.Follow-ups were conducted until discharge or death.Regression analyses were performed to determine the independent factors affecting mortality.RESULTS This study included 547 patients,of whom 53(9.68%)died during hospitalization and 1 was discharged upon his request.Patients’mean age was 45.04±17.61 years, and 21.98%had severe or critical COVID-19.Alanine aminotransferase(ALT)and aspartate aminotransferase(AST)were available for 430 and 428 patients, respectively. In total,26%and 32%of patients had elevated ALT and AST,respectively.Significant liver injury with ALT or AST elevation exceeding 3-fold was recorded in 21(4.91%)and 16(3.73%)patients,respectively.Male gender, smoking, hypertension, chronic hepatitis C,and lung involvement were associated with elevated AST or ALT.AST was elevated in 50%of patients over 60-years-old.FIB-4 was significantly higher in patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU),those with more severe COVID-19,and non-survivors.The independent variables affecting outcome were supplementary vitamin C intake(1 g daily capsules)[odds ratio(OR):0.05,95%confidence interval(CI):0.008–0.337];lung consolidation(OR:4.540,95%CI:1.155–17.840);ICU admission(OR:25.032,95%CI:7.110–88.128);and FIB-4 score>3.25(OR:10.393,95%CI:2.459-43.925).Among 60(13.98%)patients with gastrointestinal symptoms,52(86.67%)had diarrhoea.Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms were predominantly females with higher body mass index, and 50(83.40%)patients had non-severe COVID-19.CONCLUSION Few Egyptian patients with COVID-19 developed a significant liver injury. The independent variables affecting mortality were supplementary vitamin C intake, lung consolidation,ICU admission, and FIB-4 score.Hend Ibrahim Shousha Shimaa Afify Rabab Maher Noha Asem Eman Fouad Ehab F Mostafa Mohammed A Medhat Amr Abdalazeem Hazem Elmorsy Miriam M Aziz Rateba S Mohammed Mohamed Ibrahem Hassan Elgarem Dalia Omran Mohamed Hassany Bassem Elsayed Ahmed Y Abdelaziz Mohamed El Kassas 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,40:1
Cytotoxic activity and phytochemical analysis of Arum palaestinum Boiss.显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the in vitro cytotoxic activity of the fractionated extract as well as isolated compounds of Arum palaestinum Boiss.(A. palaestinum)(black calla lily), and to identify the volatile components which may be responsible for the potential antitumor activity. Methods: A. palaestinum was collected from its natural habitats and subjected to phytochemical analysis for separation of pure compounds. In vitro cytotoxic activity was investigated against four human carcinoma cell lines Hep2, He La, Hep G2 and MCF7 for the fractionated extract and isolated compounds. While, the diethyl ether fraction was subjected to GC–MS analysis as it exhibited the most potent cytotoxic effect to evaluate the active constituents responsible for the cytotoxic activities. Results: Four flavonoid compounds were isolated(luteolin, chrysoeriol, isoorientin, isovitexin) from the diethyl ether and ethyl acetate. The extracts and the pure isolated compounds showed a significant high antiproliferative activity against all investigated cell lines. The GC–MS analysis revealed the separation and identification of 15 compounds representing 95.01% of the extract and belonging to different groups of chemical compounds. Conclusions: The present study is considered to be the first report on the cytotoxic activities carried out on different selected fractions and pure compounds of A. palaestinum to provide evidences for its strong antitumor activities. In addition, chrysoeriol and isovitexin compounds were isolated for the first time from the studied taxa.Mai Mohammed Farid Sameh Reda Hussein Lamiaa Fawzy Ibrahim Mohammed Ali El Desouky Amr Mohammed Elsayed Ahmad Ali El Oqlah Mahmoud Mohammed Saker 2015Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2015,5,11:1
Biliary fistula and late recurrence of liver hydatid cyst:Role of cystobiliary communication:A prospective multicenter study显示文摘BACKGROUND Hydatid cyst disease(HCD)is common in certain locations.Surgery is associated with postoperative biliary fistula(POBF)and recurrence. The primary aim of this study was to identify whether occult cysto-biliary communication(CBC)can predict recurrent HCD.The secondary aim was to assess the role of cystic fluid bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase(ALP)levels in predicting POBF and recurrent HCD.AIM To identify whether occult CBC can predict recurrent HCD.The secondary aim was to assess the role of cystic fluid bilirubin and ALP levels in predicting POBF and recurrent HCD.METHODS From September 2010 to September 2016,a prospective multicenter study was undertaken involving 244 patients with solitary primary superficial stage cystic echinococcosis 2 and cystic echinococcosis 3b HCD who underwent laparoscopic partial cystectomy with omentoplasty.Univariable logistic regression analysis assessed independent factors determining biliary complications and recurrence.RESULTS There was a highly statistically significant association(P≤0.001)between cystic fluid biochemical indices and the development of biliary complications(of 16 patients with POBF,15 patients had high cyst fluid bilirubin and ALP levels),where patients with high bilirubin-ALP levels were 3405 times more likely to have biliary complications. There was a highly statistically significant association(P≤0.001)between biliary complications, biochemical indices, and the occurrence of recurrent HCD(of 30 patients with recurrent HCD,15 patients had high cyst fluid bilirubin and ALP;all 16 patients who had POBF later developed recurrent HCD),where patients who developed biliary complications and high bilirubin-ALP were 244.6 and 214 times more likely to have recurrent hydatid cysts, respectively.CONCLUSION Occult CBC can predict recurrent HCD.Elevated cyst fluid bilirubin and ALP levels predicted POBF and recurrent HCD.Tamer A A M Habeeb Mauro Podda Boris Tadic Vishal G Shelat Yaman Tokat Mohamed Ibrahim Abo Alsaad Abd-Elfattah Kalmoush Mohammed Shaaban Nassar Fawzy Metwally Mustafa Mahmoud Hassib Morsi Badawy Mohamed Sobhy Shaaban Tarek Zaghloul Mohamed Mohammed Ibrahim El Sayed Henish Hamdi Elbelkasi Mahmoud Abdou Yassin Abdelshafy Mostafa Amr Ibrahim Waleed A-Abdelhady TamerMohamed Elshahidy Mohamed Ibrahim Mansour Adel Mahmoud Moursi Mohamed Abdallah Zaitoun EhabShehata Abd-Allah Ashraf Abdelmonem Elsayed Rasha S Elsayed Ahmed M Yehia Amr Abdelghani Mohamed Negm Heba Alhussein Abo-Alella Mostafa M Elaidy 2023World Journal of Methodology2023,13,4:0
Trabeculectomy with Ologen implant versus perfluoropropane gas bubble for open angle glaucoma in pseudophakic eyes显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of augmented trabeculotomy with Ologen versus perfluoropropane in management of pseudophakic glaucoma.METHODS:This is a comparative randomized study included 57 pseudophakic eyes of 57 patients with medically uncontrolled open angle glaucoma(OAG).Twentynine patients were allocated in group I(trabeculectomy with Ologen;trab-ologen group),while 28 patients were assigned in group II(trabeculectomy with perfluoropropane gas bubble;trab-C3 F8 gas bubble group).RESULTS:The intraocular pressure(IOP)was significantly reduced in both study groups at all postoperative follow up intervals(1 wk,3,6,12,18,24,30 and 36 mo,P<0.001).The differences between the mean IOP values of both groups remained statistically insignificance during the early 12 months of follow up.However, the trab-ologen group achieved a statistically significant reduction over the trab-C3 F8 gas bubble group during the last 24 months of follow up.CONCLUSION:Augmentation of trabeculectomy with either Ologen implant or perfluoropropane gas bubble are associated with strict long term IOP control and evident safety in medically-uncontrolled pseudophakic eyes with OAG.Ahmed S Elwehidy Tharwat Mokbel Hossam Youssef Abouelkheir Waleed Abou Samra Faried M Wagdy Amr Mohammed Elsayed Abdelkader 2021International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2021,14,4:0
