Alzheimer's disease: the silver tsunami of the 21^(st) century显示文摘Alzheimer's disease(AD), a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder, has no cure to date. One of the causes of AD is the accumulation of amyloid-beta 42(Aβ42) plaques, which result in the onset of neurodegeneration. It is not known how these plaques trigger the onset of neurodegeneration. There are several animal models developed to(i) study etiology of disease,(ii) look for genetic modifiers, and(iii) identify chemical inhibitors that can block neurodegeneration and help to find cure for this disease. An insect model of Drosophila melanogaster has also provided new insights into the disease. Here we will discuss the utility of the Drosophila eye model to study Alzheimer's disease.Ankita Sarkar Madison Irwin Aditi Singh Matthew Riccetti Amit Singh 2016Neural Regeneration Research2016,11,5:4
Multi-criteria land evaluation for suitability analysis of wheat:a case study of a watershed in eastern plateau region,India显示文摘Improper land use results in land degradation as well as decline in agricultural productivity. To obtain optimum benefit from the land, proper utilization of its resources is necessary.Land suitability analysis is the evaluation and grouping of specific areas of land in terms of their suitability for a defined use, which is a precondition for sustainable land use planning. This study investigated the applicability of Geographical Information System(GIS)techniques in combination with multi-criteria land evaluation for analysing land suitability. The study used the weighted overlay technique for multi-criteria evaluation with GIS for the assessment of suitability of wheat cultivation in Beko watershed(Purulia,India). The watershed area is moderately suitable for wheat crop production, with constraints like imperfect drainage and poor soil depth.Aditi SARKAR Amit GHOSH Pabitra BANIK 2014Geo-Spatial Information Science2014,17,2:3
Facies analysis and paleoenvironmental interpretation of Piacenzian carbonate deposits from the Guitar Formation of Car Nicobar Island,India显示文摘Facies characterization of Piacenzian(late Pliocene) carbonate sediments of the Guitar Formation in Car Nicobar Island, India and the subsequent integration of paleoecological data have been applied to interpret the paleoenvironment of the coralline algal-reef deposits. Thin-section analysis reveals that Amphiroa, Corallina and Jania are the dominant geniculate corallines, while Lithothamnion, Mesophyllum, Phymatolithon, Lithophyllum, Spongites and Lithoporella are the major non-geniculate corallines contributing to the sedimentary facies. Numerous small and larger benthic foraminifera also dominate the biogenic assemblages. Corals, barnacle shells, echinoid spines, fragments of bryozoans, mollusks and ostracodes are the subordinate constituents. Grainstones dominate the studied facies while packstones and boundstones(with wackestone elements) are the sub-lithofacies showing a fair representation. Six carbonate facies presenting a complete reef complex have been distinguished that were deposited in shallow intertidal, back-reef shelf/lagoon, reef and deeper fore-reef shelf settings. Evidences of coralline algal and benthic foraminiferal assemblages, taphonomic signatures of abrasion and fragmentation, grain size, angularity and encrustation indicate a shallow to relatively deeper bathymetric horizon of approximately 10-60 m that corresponds to a regime of high to moderate hydrodynamic conditions.Amit K.Ghosh Suman Sarkar 2013Geoscience Frontiers2013,4,6:2

Insights into simultaneous adsorption and oxidation of antimonite[Sb(III)]by crawfish shell-derived biochar:spectroscopic investigation and theoretical calculations显示文摘Removal of antimonite[Sb(Ⅲ)]from the aquatic environment and reducing its biotoxicity is urgently needed to safeguard environmental and human health.Herein, crawfish shell-derived biochars(CSB),pyrolyzed at 350,500,and 650℃,were used to remediate Sb(Ⅲ)in aqueous solutions. The adsorption data best fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models.Biochar produced at 350℃(CSB350)showed the highest adsorption capacity(27.7 mg g^(−1)),and the maximum 78%oxidative conversion of Sb(Ⅲ)to Sb(V).The adsorption results complemented with infrared(FTIR),X-ray photoelectron(XPS),and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure(NEXAFS)spectroscopy analyses indicated that the adsorption of Sb(Ⅲ)on CSB involved electrostatic interaction, surface complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups(C=O,O=C-O),π-πcoordination with aromatic C=C and C-H groups, and H-bonding with-OH group.Density functional theory calculations verified that surface complexation was the most dominant adsorption mechanism,whilstπ-πcoordination and H-bonding played a secondary role.Furthermore, electron spin resonance(ESR)and mediated electrochemical reduction/oxidation(MER/MEO)analyses confirmed that Sb(Ⅲ)oxidation at the biochar surface was governed by persistent free radicals(PFRs)(•O_(2)^(−)and•OH)and the electron donating/accepting capacity(EDC/EAC)of biochar. The abundance of preferable surface functional groups, high concentration of PFRs,and high EDC conferred CSB350 the property of an optimal adsorbent/oxidant for Sb(Ⅲ)removal from water. The encouraging results of this study call for future trials to apply suitable biochar for removing Sb(Ⅲ)from wastewater at pilot scale and optimize the process.Hanbo Chen Yurong Gao Jianhong Li Chenghua Sun Binoy Sarkar Amit Bhatnagar Nanthi Bolan Xing Yang Jun Meng Zhongzhen Liu Hong Hou Jonathan WCWong Deyi Hou Wenfu Chen Hailong Wang 2022Biochar2022,4,1:0

Clinical outcome of orbital apex syndrome in COVID associated mucormycosis patients in a tertiary care hospital显示文摘AIM: To share clinical pattern of presentation, the modalities of surgical intervention and the one month postsurgical outcome of rhino-orbito-mucormycosis(ROCM) cases.METHODS: All COVID associated mucormycosis(CAM) patients underwent comprehensive multidisciplinar y examination by ophthalmologist, otorhinolaryngologist and physician. Patients with clinical and radiological evidence of orbital apex involvement were included in the study. Appropriate medical and surgical intervention were done to each patient. Patients were followed up one-month post intervention. RESULTS: Out of 89 CAM patients, 31(34.8%) had orbital apex syndrome. Sixty-six(74.2%) of such patients had pre-existing diabetes mellitus, 18(58%) patients had prior documented use of steroid use, and 55(61.8%) had no light perception(LP) presenting vision. Blepharoptosis, proptosis, complete ophthalmoplegia were common clinical findings. Seventeen(19.1%) of such patients had variable amount of cavernous sinus involvement. Endoscopic debridement of paranasal sinuses and orbit with or without eyelid sparing limited orbital exenteration was done in most cases, 34(38.2%) patients could retain vision in the affected eye. CONCLUSION: Orbital apex involvement in CAM patients occur very fast. It not only leads to loss of vision but also sacrifice of the eyeball, orbital contents and eyelids. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention can preserve life, vision and spare mutilating surgeries.Smiti Rani Srivastava Purban Ganguly Debasis Barman Sudip Das Manimoy Bandyopadhyay Asim Kumar Ghosh Subhra Sarkar Amitabha Sengupta Sarbari Swaika Pritam Chatterjee Amit Kumar Gupta Alok Ranjan Mondal Soumyajit Guha Sinjita Dutta Souvik Adhikari Aditi Kaushik Partha Sundar Biswas Asif Ayub 2022International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2022,15,4:0
Diversity of Middle Eocene Coralline Red Algae from the Prang Limestone(Shella Formation) of Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, NE Himalaya, India with special emphasis on palaeoenvironment显示文摘Palaeocene-Eocene carbonates of shallow marine sequence belonging to Shella Formation of Jaintia Group are well developed in the south of the Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya and represent an excellent outcrop of shelf sediments in North Eastern Himalaya, India. These outcrops are exposed along the southern fringe of Shillong Plateau. The Prang Limestone is the uppermost lithostratigraphic unit of the Shella Formation within the Jaintia Group. It is overlain by sand-shale alternation of the Kopili Formation and underlain by the Narpuh Sandstone. A rich assemblage of larger foraminifera including Nummulites, Discocyclina etc. has been recorded earlier from the Prang Limestone and based on the foraminiferal assemblage, a Middle Eocene to Early Late Eocene age has been assigned to the Prang Limestone. Thin section analysis of the Prang Limestone revealed the abundance of well preserved coralline red algae along with other well preserved and significant biogenic elements. Morpho-taxonomical study reveals that the algal flora is represented by seven species belonging to the families Hapalidiaceae(Subfamily: Melobesioideae), Corallinaceae(Subfamily: Mastophoroideae) and Sporolithaceae. The dominance of melobesioid and mastophoroid forms is the characteristic feature of this algal assemblage. Coralline algae occur mostly in encrusting growth form with orbitoid foraminifera and occasionally the coralline algae form rhodoliths. On this basis of algal forms it can be inferred that they thrived in a shallow, warm, shelf environment of normal salinity.GHOSH Amit Kumar SARMA Ajanta SARKAR Suman 2013科学通报2013,58,S1:0
Vitamin C and E supplementation and high intensity interval training induced changes in lipid profile and haematological variables of young males显示文摘High intensity interval training(HIIT)causes oxidative stress and haematological alteration.Present study was aimed to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks’supplementation of vitamin C and E on HIIT induced changes in lipid profile parameters and haematological variables.Hundred six male adolescent players were randomly assigned into five age-matched groups,i.e.,Control(no exercise+placebo),HIIT(placebo),HIIT+vitamin-C(1000mg/day),HIIT+vitamin-E 400 IU/day)and combined HIIT+vitamin C and E.Morning and evening sessions(90min)of HIIT included 4 phases(15min each)with 3 sets(4min each). Each 4min HIIT set consisted of 2min intense sprint workout(90%–95%of heart rate maximum[HRmax])followed by 1min active recovery(60%–70%HRmax)followed by 1min of complete rest(1:1 work-rest ratio).Lipid profile parameters, haematological variables, endurance capacity and vertical jump were evaluated by standard protocols.Significant decrease in body weight, fat%,total cholesterol, triglyceride,Total Cholesterol/High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol and significant increase in High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol,maximal oxygen consumption, vertical jump were observed for all four intervention groups.White blood cell count, red blood cell count, haemoglobin percentage and haematocrit values were significantly decreased while platelet count and platelet-to-leukocyte ratio(PLR)ratio were increased significantly only for HIIT group.Blood level of tocopherol and ascorbic acid was significantly increased(values were within the normal range)in all the respective vitamin supplemented groups.Supplementation of vitamin C and E secures health protection with suppressed haemolysis and improved inflammatory blood variables with enhanced explosive leg strength and lipid profile parameters without any concomitant change in endurance capacity.Surojit Sarkar Swapan Kr Dey Gouriprosad Datta Amit Bandyopadhyay 2023Sports Medicine and Health Science2023,5,2:0
Cu-water nanofluid flow induced by a vertical stretching sheet in presence of a magnetic field with convective heat transfer显示文摘The convective heat transfer performance of nanofluid over a permeable stretching sheet with thermal convective boundary condition in presence of magnetic field and slip velocity is studied in the present paper.Cu-water nanofluid is used to investigate the effect of nanoparticles on the flow and heat transfer characteristic. The numerical results are compared with published results and are found in an excellent agreement. The influences of various relevant parameters on the velocity and temperature as well as the rate of shear stress and the rate of heat transfer are elucidated through graphs and tables. It is observed that nanoparticles volume fraction and surface convection parameter both increase the thickness of thermal boundary layer.Kalidas Das Amit Sarkar Prabir Kumar Kundu 2017Propulsion and Power Research2017,6,3:0
