| 1 | Waste production in aquaculture:Sources,components and managements in different culture systems显示文摘The intensification of aquaculture has emerged as a viable alternative for increasing aquaculture production due to competition that arose from the use of natural resources,such as land and water,by other production and developmental sectors.However,intensification demands increased inputs,such as fish and feed per unit culture area and,therefore,increased waste generation from the aquaculture production systems.The impact of waste products from aquaculture has increased public concern and threatens the sustainability of aquaculture practices.The need for increasing the production of aquaculture products cannot be overemphasized and,therefore,there is a need to develop culture systems that will increase fish production with efficient waste management in order to limit environmental degradation resulting from aquaculture wastes and ensure its sustainability.This paper reviewed various aspects of waste production from aquaculture,their sources,components,and methods of management,in different culture systems,primarily discussing waste production from feed,chemicals,and pathogens.We aimed to establish the sources of wastes,their contents,and potential harms to both the fish culture and the environment.Suggestions for managing wastes in different culture systems were made to ensure an improved and sustainable aquaculture production. | Akeem Babatunde Dauda Abdullateef Ajadi Adenike Susan Tola-Fabunmi Ayoola Olusegun Akinwole | 2019 | Aquaculture and Fisheries2019，4，3： | 19 |

| 3 | Antioxidants in aqueous extract of Myristica fragrans(Houtt.) suppress mitosis and cyclophosphamide-induced chromosomal aberrations in Allium cepa L.cells显示文摘In this study,freeze-dried water extract from the leaves of Myristica fragrans(Houtt.) was tested for mutagenic and antimutagenic potentials using the Allium cepa assay.Freeze-dried water extract alone and its combination with cyclophosphamide(CP)(50 mg/kg) were separately dissolved in tap water at 500,1000,2000,and 4000 mg/kg.Onions(A.cepa) were suspended in the solutions and controls for 48 h in the dark.Root tips were prepared for microscopic evaluation.2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radicals' scavenging power of the extract was tested using butylated hydroxyanisole(BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT) as standards.Water extract of Myristica fragrans scavenged free radicals better than BHA,but worse than BHT.The extract alone,as well as in combination with CP suppressed cell division,and induced chromosomal aberrations that were insignificantly different from the negative control(P≤0.05).However,cytotoxic and mutagenic actions of CP were considerably suppressed.The observed effects on cell division and chromosomes of A.cepa may be principally connected to the antioxidant properties of the extract.The obtained results suggest mitodepressive and antimutagenic potentials of water extract of the leaves of M.fragrans as desirable properties of a promising anticancer agent. | Akeem AKINBORO Kamaruzaman Bin MOHAMED Mohd Zaini ASMAWI Shaida Fariza SULAIMAN Othman Ahmad SOFIMAN | 2011 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2011，12，11： | 4 |
| 4 | Efficacy of praziquantel in the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium infection among school-age children in rural communities of Abeokuta, Nigeria显示文摘Background:Chemotherapy with praziquantel(PZQ)has been the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control over the last two decades.Being the only available drug for the treatment of over 200 million people worldwide,continuous monitoring of PZQ efficacy under the pressure of widespread use is therefore advocated.Methods:The efficacy of taking two doses of oral PZQ for the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium was examined among school children in Nigeria.Urine specimens were collected from 350 school children and examined using the filtration technique.Blood was collected for packed cell volume(PCV)estimation,and the weight and height of each child were estimated.S.haematobium egg positive pupils were treated with two oral doses of PZQ at 40 mg/kg with a four-week interval in between.Drug efficacy was determined based on the egg reduction rate(ERR).Results:Among 350 school children,245(70.0%)-of which 132 were males and 113 were females,with an age range of 4 to 15 years-were diagnosed with S.haematobium.All the 245 infected children received a single oral dose of 40 mg/kg PZQ twice with a four-week interval in between and were followed up for 12 weeks.At four,eight and twelve weeks post treatment,the ERR was 57.1%,77.6%and 100%,respectively.The ERR was significantly higher among the children with a light infection compared to those with a heavy infection.One hundred and twenty-one children were egg negative at four weeks post treatment,among which 1(6.3)and 120(52.4%)had heavy and light infections,respectively.Following the second round of treatment,the cure rate at eight weeks and twelve weeks was 85.3%and 100%,respectively.Conclusion:This study demonstrated the efficacy of taking two doses of oral PZQ for the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis among school children in Nigeria. | Olusola Ojurongbe Olawunwi Risqat Sina-Agbaje Abass Busari Patricia Nkem Okorie Taiwo Adetola Ojurongbe Akeem Abiodun Akindele | 2014 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014，3，1： | 3 |
| 5 | Assessment of Fish Farming Practices, Operations, Water Resource Management and Profitability in Katsina State, Nigeria显示文摘This study assessed the fish production, culture facilities, operations, water resource management and profitability of fish farming in Katsina State, Nigeria, with a view of understanding the status of aquaculture development in Katsina State. Data were collected using structured questionnaire administered to 35 out of the active 42 farms in Katsina State at the period and the data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear regression. Among the respondents, 37.1% used concrete tank alone and another 37.2% used concrete tank with other types of culture facilities, 57.1% practised mono-culture techniques and 77.1% used stagnant renewal system as culture system. Management of water quality was done by majority(82.9%) with mere visual evaluation, while 68.6% did not use any forms of water treatment. Most of the farms(80%) depended on imported feed for feeding their fish and gross profits of ■7.29±1.81 and ■157.83±118.08 were obtained on fingerlings and adult fish, respectively. The tested explanatory variables were responsible for 45.4% change in profitability and profitability was found to be dependent on feeding cost(t=–3.38 and p=0.002) and size of fish at harvest(t=2.70 and p=0.011). | 15 | Safety evaluation of an anti-haemorrhoid(pile)herbal recipe(locally called‘Agbo jedi-jedi’)of Southwestern Nigeria using animal genetic assays显示文摘Objective:In this study,an anti-haemorrhoid herbal recipe containing bark of Alstonia boonei and dried cloves–Syzygium aromaticum was investigated for cytogenotoxicity,mutagenicity and histopathological effects following the micronucleus and sperm morphology assays using Wistar albino rats.Methods:The rats were administered anti-haemorrhoid herbal recipe at 25.0%,50.0%and 100.0%,while distilled water and 0.05%sodium azide were the negative and positive controls,respectively.Phytochemicals in the herbal recipe were elucidated using the Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)and Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detection(GC-FID)techniques.Results:In the treated rats,there was increase in body weight,cells division inhibition,micronucleated polychromatic/normochromatic erythrocytes(MNPCEs&MNNCEs)and abnormal sperm cells were significantly induced at 100.0%(P<0.05),whereas 25.0%herbal recipe promoted cell division.The herbal recipe at 50.0%and 100.0%did not cause any histopathological damages on the liver,kidney and testis except at 25.0%.Polyphenolics,terpenoids and alkaloids were detected in this anti-haemorrhoid herbal recipe which could be cytotoxic,clastogenic and spermatotoxic at a high concentration(100.0%).Conclusion:These results necessitate regulation and control of consumption of the anti-haemorrhoid herbal recipe by people through the authorized government agencies in Nigeria. | Akeem Akinboro Asiata Ibrahim Jemilat Muhammed Hameedah Oloyede Rofiat Alimi | 2023 | Toxicology Advances2023，5，1： | 0 |

| 17 | Evaluating Feed Intake of Fishes in Aquaculture Nutrition Experiments with Due Consideration of Mortality and Fish Survival显示文摘Mortality is normal and natural in aquaculture experiments. However, it becomes a problem when measuring feed intake as a component of nutrient utilization parameters such as: feed conversion ratio, feed conversion efficiency, apparent net protein utilization, protein efficiency ratio and protein productive value. In order to accurately evaluate feed intake with due consideration of mortality encountered, a formulae was developed using empirical data obtained from an experiement that had mortality. The formulae Fwas: total feed consumed by numbers of survived fishes=DL∑_(i=1)~n(F_i/N_i)N. Where, D=Numbers of days fishes were fed within each period ibefore it was adjusted(e.g fortnight), it was constant throught period of experiment; F=Uantity of feed fed per day for a fortnight before the quantity was adjusted, it changed every fortnight; L=Numbers of living fishes at the end of experimental period; N=Numbers of fishes at each weighing period, it might change every fortnight or might be constant if no mortality occurred; while n=Numbers of times fishes were weighed and quantity of feed was adjusted but this did not include the final weighing at the termination of experiment.
