| 1 | Utilisation of transparent synthetic soil surrogates in geotechnical physical models: A review显示文摘Efforts to obtain non-intrusive measurement of deformations and spatial flow within soil mass prior to the advent of transparent soils have perceptible limitations. The transparent soil is a two-phase medium composed of both the synthetic aggregate and fluid components of identical refractive indices aiming at attaining transparency of the resulting soil. The transparency facilitates real life visualisation of soil continuum in physical models. When applied in conjunction with advanced photogrammetry and image processing techniques, transparent soils enable the quantification of the spatial deformation, displacement and multi-phase flow in physical model tests. Transparent synthetic soils have been successfully employed in geotechnical model tests as soil surrogates based on the testing results of their geotechnical properties which replicate those of natural soils. This paper presents a review on transparent synthetic soils and their numerous applications in geotechnical physical models. The properties of the aggregate materials are outlined and the features of the various transparent clays and sands available in the literature are described. The merits of transparent soil are highlighted and the need to amplify its application in geotechnical physical model researches is emphasised. | 3 | Long-Term Characterization of Sea Conditions in the East China Sea Using Significant Wave Height and Wind Speed显示文摘In this study, the statistical characterization of sea conditions in the East China Sea(ECS) is investigated by analyzing a significant wave height and wind speed data at a 6-hour interval for 30 years(1980–2009), which was simulated and computed using the WAVEWATCH Ⅲ(WW3) model. The monthly variations of these parameters showed that the significant wave height and wind speed have minimum values of 0.73 m and 5.15 ms^(-1) and 1.73 m and 8.24 ms^(-1) in the month of May and December, respectively. The annual, seasonal, and monthly mean sea state characterizations showed that the slight sea generally prevailed in the ECS and had nearly the highest occurrence in all seasons and months. Additionally, the moderate sea prevailed in the winter months of December and January, while the smooth(wavelets) sea prevailed in May. Furthermore, the spatial variation of sea states showed that the calm and smooth sea had the largest occurrences in the northern ECS. The slight sea occurred mostly(above 30%) in parts of the ECS and the surrounding locations, while higher occurrences of the rough and very rough seas were distributed in waters between the southwest ECS and the northeast South China Sea(SCS). | 4 | Membrane-type Ⅰ matrix metalloproteinase(MT1-MMP),lipid metabolism,and therapeutic implications显示文摘Lipids exert many essential physiological functions,such as serving as a structural component of biological membranes,storing energy,and regulating cell signal transduction.Dysregulation of lipid metabolism can lead to dyslipidemia related to various human diseases,such as obesity,diabetes,and cardiovascular disease.Therefore,lipid metabolism is strictly regulated through multiple mechanisms at different levels,including the extracellular matrix.Membrane-type I matrix metalloproteinase(MT1-MMP),a zinc-dependent endopeptidase,proteolytically cleaves extracellular matrix components,and non-matrix proteins,thereby regulating many physiological and pathophysiological processes.Emerging evidence supports the vital role of MT1-MMP in lipid metabolism.For example,MT1-MMP mediates ectodomain shedding of low-density lipoprotein receptor and increases plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and the development of atherosclerosis.It also increases the vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaque by promoting collagen cleavage.Furthermore,it can cleave the extracellular matrix of adipocytes,affecting adipogenesis and the development of obesity.Therefore,the activity of MT1-MMP is strictly regulated by multiple mechanisms,such as autocatalytic cleavage,endocytosis and exocytosis,and post-translational modifications.Here,we summarize the latest advances in MT1-MMP,mainly focusing on its role in lipid metabolism,the molecular mechanisms regulating the function and expression of MT1-MMP,and their pharmacotherapeutic implications. | Xiao-Dan Xia Adekunle Alabi Maggie Wang Hong-Mei Gu Rui Zhe Yang Gui-Qing Wang Da-Wei Zhang | 2021 | Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2021,13,7: | 3 |
| 5 | Prediction and assessment of demand response potential with coupon incentives in highly renewable power systems显示文摘Demand Response(DR)provides both operational and financial benefits to a variety of stakeholders in the power system.For example,in the deregulated market operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas(ERCOT),load serving entities(LSEs)usually purchase electricity from the wholesale market(either in day-ahead or real-time market)and sign fixed retail price contracts with their end-consumers.Therefore,incentivizing end-consumers’load shift from peak to off-peak hours could benefit the LSE in terms of reducing its purchase of electricity under high prices from the real-time market.As the first-of-its-kind implementation of Coupon Incentive-based Demand Response(CIDR),the EnergyCoupon project provides end-consumers with dynamic time-of-use DR event announcements,individualized load reduction targets with EnergyCoupons as the incentive for meeting these targets,as well as periodic lotteries using these coupons as lottery tickets for winning dollar-value gifts.A number of methodologies are developed for this special type of DR program including price/baseline prediction,individualized target setting and a lottery mechanism.This paper summarizes the methodologies,design,critical findings,as well as the potential generalization of such an experiment.Comparison of the EnergyCoupon with a conventional Time-of-Use(TOU)price-based DR program is also conducted.Experimental results in the year 2017 show that by combining dynamic coupon offers with periodic lotteries,the effective cost for demand response providers in EnergyCoupon can be substantially reduced,while achieving a similar level of demand reduction as conventional DR programs. | Hao Ming Bainan Xia Ki-Yeob Lee Adekunle Adepoju Srinivas Shakkottai Le Xie | 2020 | Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems2020,5,1: | 3 |
| 6 | Lead exposure increases oxidative stress in the gastric mucosa of HCl/ethanol-exposed rats显示文摘AIM: To investigate the role of reactive oxygen species in the ulcer-aggravating effect of lead in albino rats. METHODS: Albino Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups and treated orally with 100 mg/L (low dose) or 5000 mg/L (high dose) of lead acetate for 15 wk. A third group received saline and served as control. At the end of wk 15, colorimetric assays were applied to determine the concentrations of total protein and nitrite, the activities of the oxidative enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase, and lipid peroxidation in homogenized gastric mucosal samples. RESULTS: Exposure of rats to lead significantly increased the gastric mucosal damage caused by acidified ethanol. Although the basal gastric acid secretory rate was not significantly altered, the maximal response of the stomach to histamine was significantly higher in the lead-exposed animals than in the unexposed control group. Exposure to low and high levels of lead significantly increased gastric lipid peroxidation to 183.2% ± 12.7% and 226.1% ± 6.8% of control values respectively (P < 0.0). On the other hand, lead exposure significantly decreased catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and the amount of nitrite in gastric mucosal samples. | 8 | Pre-treatment considerations in childhood hypertension due to chronic kidney disease显示文摘Hypertension(HTN) develops very early in childhood chronic kidney disease(CKD). It is linked with rapid progression of kidney disease, increased morbidity and mortality hence the imperative to start antihypertensive medication when blood pressure(BP)is persistently > 90 th percentile for age, gender, and height in non-dialyzing hypertensive children with CKD. HTN pathomechanism in CKD is multifactorial and complexly interwoven. The patient with CKD-associated HTN needs to be carefully evaluated for co-morbidities that frequently alter the course of the disease as successful treatment of HTN in CKD goes beyond life style modification and anti-hypertensive therapy alone. Chronic anaemia, volume overload, endothelial dysfunction, arterial media calcification, and metabolic derangements like secondary hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphataemia, and calcitriol deficiency are a few co-morbidities that may cause or worsen HTN in CKD. It is important to know if the HTN is caused or made worse by the toxic effects of medications like erythropoietin, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Poor treatment response may be due to any of these co-morbidities and medications. A satisfactory hypertensive CKD outcome, therefore, depends very much on identifying and managing these co-morbid conditions and HTN promoting medications promptly and appropriately.
