1Use of ginger versus stretching exercises for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea: a randomized controlled trial显示文摘BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhea is a common gynecologic problem. In some cases, non-medical treatments are considered to be more effective, with fewer side effects. Ginger and exercise are alternative treatments for dysmenorrhea, but in the present study they were not combined. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the effects of ginger and exercise on primary dysmenorrhea were compared.DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: This randomized controlled trial was performed in Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Two groups of female students were recruited by simple random allocation. In each group, 61 students with moderate to severe primary dysmenorrhea with regular menstrual cycles and without a history of regular exercise were assessed. The ginger group received 250 mg ginger capsules from the onset of menstruation. In the exercise group, belly and pelvic stretching exercises were performed for 10 min, 3 times per week. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Intensity of pain was assessed according to a visual analogue scale after the first and the second month. RESULTS: Exercise was significantly more effective than ginger for pain relief(31.57 ± 16.03 vs 38.19 ± 20.47, P = 0.02), severity of dysmenorrhea(63.9% vs 44.3% mild dysmenorrhea, P = 0.02) and decrease in menstrual duration(6.08 ± 1.22 vs 6.67 ± 1.24, P = 0.006), in the second cycle. CONCLUSION: Stretching exercises, as a safe and low-cost treatment, are more effective than ginger for pain relief in primary dysmenorrhea.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial was registered in www.IRCT.ir with No. 201203118822N2.Marjan Ahmad Shirvani Narges Motahari-Tabari Abbas Alipour 2017Journal of Integrative Medicine2017,15,4:3
2Protoscolicidal and immunomodulatory activity of Ziziphora tenuior extract and its fractions显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the scolicidal and immunomodulatory effect of the Ziziphora tenuior(Z.tenuior) extract and its fractions. Methods:Protoscolices were treated with six concentrations(3,5,10,25,50,and 100 mg/mL) of Z.tenuior extract and its fractions(ethanol, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and chloroform) in periods of 10,20,30,40,50 and 60 minutes, and viability of protoscolices was evaluated using the 1.0%eosin.To examine the immunomodulatory effects of Ziziphora and its fractions on macrophage cells, the non-toxic concentration of extract and different fractions determined by MTT assay, and the Griess reaction was used to measure the level of nitrite as an indicator of nitric oxide by the macrophage cells in 10,100 and 200 μg/mL in 24 hours at 37 ℃.Results:In this study, the Z.tenuior extract at 10 mg/mL concentration was able to kill all protoscolices during 20 minutes.By increasing the concentration to 25 mg/mL,the scolicidal time reduced to 10 minutes.Regarding the effect of different fractions of Z.tenuior, the ethanolic fraction showed the highest scolicidal activity. The extract demonstrated an inhibitory effect on the activity of macrophages and reduced nitric oxide production.Although the petroleum ether and ethanolic fractions of the extract reduced nitric oxide production, nevertheless, this effect was only significant at 10 and 100 ug/mL concentrations(P<0.05).Conclusion:The Z.tenuior extract and its fractions were effective against protoscolices yet the effect of total extract was considerable. Our findings indicates that the extract and its ethanolic and petroleum ether fractions could have anti-inflammatory properties.Mojtaba Shahnazi Abbas Azadmehr Ammar Andalibian Reza Hajiaghaee Mehrzad Saraei Mahmood Alipour 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,11:1
3Evaluating the effect of Myrtus communis on programmed cell death in hydatid cyst protoscolices显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the possible involvement of programmed cell death strategy in hydatid cyst protoscolices following treatment with Myrtus communis(M. communis) as an herbal medicine. Methods: Protoscolices were aseptically collected from sheep liver hydatid cysts. Evaluating the effect of M. communis extract on programmed cell death and increased activity of caspases 3, 8, and 9 in hydatid cyst protoscolices was conducted by treating the protoscolices with different concentration(5, 50, and 100 mg/mL) of M. communis extract at37C and 5% CO2 for 4 h by using the Bradford test and ELISA commercial kits. Results: The extract of M. communis at all concentrations led to initiation of programmed cell death in protoscolices and this effect, was only significant at 50 and 100 mg/mL concentrations, compared to the negative control(P < 0.05). Also, the activity of caspases3, 8, and 9 in hydatid cyst protoscolices, was shown that the extract at all 3 concentrations could only increase the activity of caspases 3 and 9. Moreover, a significant increase in the activity of caspase 3 was only observed at concentrations 50 and 100 mg/m L by 37.00%and 66.19% while a significant increase in the activity of caspase 9 at the same concentrations was observed by 20.89% and 63.67%, respectively(P < 0.05).Conclusions: The extract of M. communis at different concentrations could increase the activity of caspases 3 and 9 and caused programmed cell death in hydatid cyst protoscolices however, this effect was significant at high concentrations of the extract.Mojtaba Shahnazi Abbas Azadmehr Moazzam Dosti Jondabeh Reza Hajiaghaee Reza Norian Hamidreza Aghaei Mehrzad Saraei Mahmood Alipour 2017Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2017,10,11:0
4Treatment of moderate to severe keratoconus with 6-mm Intacs SK显示文摘·AIM:To evaluate the effect of Intacs SK corneal ring segment implant for treatment of patients with moderate to severe keratoconus, who have clear central cornea and cannot tolerate contact lens. ·METHODS:In this prospective, non-comparative, intervent- ional case series study performed in Dena Hospital, Shiraz, Iran, thirty-seven eyes of thirty-six patients with moderate to severe keratoconus, clear central cornea, and contact lens intolerance were enrolled and underwent Intacs SK corneal ring segment implantation. Preoperatively, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), central corneal thickness(CCT) and average keratometry (Av-K) were measured and compared with post-operative results at one week, one month, three months, and six months. ·RESULTS:Mean preoperative UCDVA and BCDVA were (1.32±0.31) logMAR and (1.07±0.27) logMAR, respectively. Av-K was (52.13±0.39)D, and the CCT was (432±39.5)μm. Post-operative examinations showed a clinically significant improvement in both UCDVA and BCDVA (P <0.001). There was also a significant effect based on the time of assessment on both UCDVA and BCDVA and both parameters had a continuous improvement during the follow-up period. Three months after operation there was a statistical significant reduction of Av-K (P =0.0001), but there were no significant changes in CCT (P =0.149). ·CONCLUSION:Intacs SK corneal ring segment implants seem to be a safe and effective treatment option for patients who have keratoconus, clear central cornea, and contact lens intolerance.Sasan Niknam Mehrdad Shamshiri Seyed Sahabaldin Shahrzad Abbas Alipour Mohammad Bagher Rajabi Mohammad Taher Rajabi 2012International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2012,5,4:0
