The Role of Philosophy in Insecurity and Good Governance in Nigeria显示文摘This paper re-emphasizes the relevance of philosophy in combating insecurity and bringing about good governance in Nigeria. It laments on the Nigerian negligence to the worth of philosophy in addressing the Nigerian social challenges which have called for concerns.Hence, the attitude of Nigerians to have soon forgotten the indispensability of philosophy in addressing social challenges, criticizing the political elites to bring about justice and good governance among other things,is really amazing.Consequently,Nigeria counts backwards whereas her counterparts count forward in terms of development, social tranquillity, good governance, practical and sincere consciousness of morality, strong economy and security, health and education wise, etc.Hence this paper attempts, with every possible effort,to define philosophy and elucidate its worth in tactically engaging insecurity and bringing about good governance. The end of this research will show that philosophy and its critical and systematic tenets are the basic answers to Nigerian challenges especially as they concern insecurity and bad governance. We will critically employ historical and ex post facto methods. | Anayochukwu K.JP.Ugwu George Ohabuenyi Abah | 2020 | Journal of Sociology Study2020,10,6: | 0
Heavy metals and health risk analysis of arable farmlands in selected local government areas of Taraba State,Nigeria显示文摘The soil environment is a reservoir of nutrients as well as pollutants, and because of this, most of our food items are ladened with lots of pollutants ranging from fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides to heavy metals(HM).The consumption of these contaminated food items has serious implication on the health and economic status of the populace. These pollutants have also been implicated in causing several problems to plants. This study investigated heavy metals and health risk analysis of arable farmlands in selected Local Government Areas(Donga,Ussa and Takum)of Taraba state Nigeria.Samples obtained were processed and the concentration of following heavy metals(Pb,Cd,Cr,Hg,and As)were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry(AAS).The results showed that Chromium had a very high concentration across all the study areas with values ranging from 1.40mg/kg to 2.30 mg/kg.The concentration of Cadmium and Arsenic were moderate, with values ranging from 0.03mg/kg to 0.08mg/kg while Lead and Mercury had the lowest concentration of less than 0.03mg/kg across the three LGAs respectively. The following ecological and health risk assessments parameters;Target Cancer Risk or Target Hazard Quotient(THQ),Hazard Index(HI)and Estimated Daily Intake(EDI)were determined to assess the carcinogenic health risks by consuming produce from such farmlands.Ussa LGA recorded the highest concentration of heavy metals, with the highest health risk index followed by Takum whereas Donga had the lowest risk factors from the analysis. The study showed bioaccumulation of toxicants from the soil to crops and grazing plants across the study areas which was as a result of chemical farming that polluted and contaminated the soil, thus posing risk to the populace. | Bilyaminu Habibu Otitoju Olawale Francis Yakubu Ojochenemi Ejeh Moses Adondua Abah | 2023 | Toxicology Advances2023,5,4: | 0
Growth indices of seeds(maize and cowpea)grown in heavy metal contaminated soil treated with ginger extract显示文摘The consumption of maize and cowpea in Africa and developing countries is high, owing to the fact that they are readily available, coupled the with nutritional benefits they provide.Growth loss has been seen in crops cultivated on heavy metal polluted soils as a consequence of alterations in physiological and biochemical processes. This study was aimed at assessing the growth indices of seeds(maize and cowpea)grown on heavy metal contaminated soil treated with ginger extracts. The study adopted a Complete Randomized Design(CRD)in which growth indices of either maize or cowpea were examined from each crop type grown on soil without any pollutant or treatment and soils with metal pollutants;with or without treatment with ginger extracts in the individual experiments.Data were analyzed using ANOVA.The results showed that ginger extract induced oxidative stress on cowpea after 10 days of cultivation with root length significantly(P≤0.05)higher on the normal control-G-M and+L-G which recorded 7.60 and 7.3 cm respectively.Patterns of growth indices noticed after 30 and 40 days of cowpea cultivation were variable showing least growth in leaf development.Highest maize root(27.00 cm),shoot(8.85 cm)and leaf(25.25 cm)development were recorded in maize grown on soil without metal contamination but treated with ginger(+G-M-positive control)after days 10,40 and 40 after cultivation. It was observed that the soil contaminated with heavy metals affected the growth pattern of the crops thereby causing stunted growth, chlorosis, discoloration and wilting. It could be concluded that cowpea performed better in shoot of both treated and untreated soils even though the values were not significantly different from that of root and leaf while maize showed a decrease in shoot even though the values for root and leaf were not significantly different. | Tatah Verwiyeh Silas Ezeonu Chukwuma Stephen Moses Adondua Abah Abu Sunday Michael Umaru John Isaac Roy Yohanna Emochone | 2023 | Toxicology Advances2023,5,4: | 0
Pregnancy Rate of Bunaji Cows in a Fixed Time AI Synchronization Protocol Using Ovatide显示文摘This study accessed the reproductive performance of Bunaji cows in an Ovsynch protocol involving ovatide.Bunaji cows(n=16)aged 4-6 years and weighing between 250-350 kg with body condition scores(BCS)of 2.5-3.5 were used. There were two treatment groups for synchronization of ovulation.Treatment group 1 comprising Bunaji(n=8)received 50μg of gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH)(Cystorelin)and 25 mg of PGF2α.While,treatment group 2 comprising Bunaji(n=8)received 50μg of ovatide and 25 mg of PGF2α.All cows from both treatment groups were inseminated at 16 h after each second GnRH or ovatide injections.Cows that showed mucus discharge from the vagina on the day of artificial insemination(AI)were recorded as well as those that had patent cervix.Cervical dilation was measured by taking note of the cows that had mid cervix insemination due to non-passage of the AI gun through the cervix.Transrectal palpation was conducted twice at a month interval to select cycling cows within 5-12 d of the estrous cycle before initiating Ovsynch protocol. It was repeated on day 45 post AI to confirm pregnancies in animals. Results showed that the rate of mucus discharge from the vagina was 37.5%and 87.5%for ovatide and Cystorelin, respectively;while the rate of cervical dilation were 75%and 87.5%for ovatide and Cystorelin,respectively(p>0.05),and pregnancy rates were 0%and 12.5%for ovatide and Cystorelin, respectively. There were no significant differences between the two groups. It was concluded that treatment of Bunaji cows with 50μg ovatide in Ovsynh protocol has heat and ovulation synchronization potentials and zero pregnancy rate.It was recommended that further studies be carried out using graded doses of 50,100 and 150μg of ovatide in a fixed time AI synchronization protocol in Bunaji cows,to tap the potentials of the hormone in manipulation of bovine reproduction. | Ubah Simon Azubuike Rekwot Peter Ibrahim Adewuyi Abdulmujeeb Bode Omontese Bobwealth Oakina Adeyeye Adewale Ayodeji Columbus Philemon Kwinjoh Abah Owoicho Kenneth Agbonu Oluwa Adikpe Ejiofor Charles Ejike | 2019 | Journal of Agricultural Science and Technology(A)2019,9,1: | 0
Observed versus estimated actual trend of COVID-19 case numbers in Cameroon:A data-driven modelling显示文摘Controlling the COVID-19 outbreak remains a challenge for Cameroon,as it is for many other countries worldwide. The number of confirmed cases reported by health authorities in Cameroon is based on observational data, which is not nationally representative. The actual extent of the outbreak from the time when the first case was reported in the country to now remains unclear. This study aimed to estimate and model the actual trend in the number of COVID-19 new infections in Cameroon from March 05,2020 to May 31,2021 based on an observed disaggregated dataset. We used a large disaggregated dataset, and multilevel regression and poststratification model was applied prospectively for COVID-19 cases trend estimation in Cameroon from March 05,2020 to May 31,2021.Subsequently,seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average(SARIMA)modeling was used for forecasting purposes.Based on the prospective MRP modeling findings,a total of about 7450935(30%)of COVID-19 cases was estimated from March 05,2020 to May 31,2021 in Cameroon.Generally, the reported number of COVID-19 infection cases in Cameroon during this period underestimated the estimated actual number by about 94 times. The forecasting indicated a succession of two waves of the outbreak in the next two years following May 31,2021.If no action is taken, there could be many waves of the outbreak in the future. To avoid such situations which could be a threat to global health, public health Abbreviations:ACF,Autocorrelation Function;AIC,Akaike information criterion;COVID-19,Coronavirus Disease 2019;MAE,Mean Absolute Error;MAPE,Mean Absolute Percentage Error;MASE,Mean Absolute Scaled Error;ME,Mean Error;MPE,Mean Percentage Error;MRP,Multilevel Regression and Post-stratification;PACF,Partial Autocorrelation Function;PLACARD,Platform for Collecting,Analyzing and Reporting Data;SARIMA,Seasonal Autoregressive integrated moving average;SARS-CoV-2,Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2. | Arsène Brunelle Sandie Mathurin Cyrille Tejiokem Cheikh Mbacké Faye Achta Hamadou Aristide Abah Abah Serge Sadeuh Mbah Paul Alain Tagnouokam-Ngoupo Richard Njouom Sara Eyangoh Ngu Karl Abanda Maryam Diarra Slimane Ben Miled Maurice Tchuente Jules Brice Tchatchueng-Mbougua | 2023 | Infectious Disease Modelling2023,8,1: | 0
