2Improved performance of naringenin herbosomes over naringenin in streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats: In vitro and in vivo evaluation显示文摘Objective:To prepare naringenin herbosome and evaluate its antidiabetic activity. Methods:Herbosomes were prepared by the solvent evaporation method. In vitro parameters like particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and entrapment efficiency were estimated and in vitro diffusion study was performed. The in vivo studies were also performed in streptozotocin-induced diabetic male Sprague Dawley rats to evaluate blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, blood urea nitrogen, total protein, albumin level, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase levels. Results:The optimized herbosome batch showed a particle size of 564.4 nm,a polydispersity index of 0.412,and zeta potential of−39.3 mV.The percentage entrapment of this formulation was 84.04%,with complete drug release within 8 h.Treatment of diabetic rats with naringenin herbosomes for 28 d significantly reduced the elevated level of plasma glucose as compared to plain naringenin. In biochemical parameters, the treatment showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood urea nitrogen;while elevated levels of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were returned to normal.Pure naringenin and herbosome formulation at high dose increased the total protein whereas albumin level significantly increased in naringenin herbosomes at the highest dose but not in the pure naringenin treatment group. Conclusions:Naringenin herbosomes could improve the metabolic profile of diabetic rats, indicating enhanced antidiabetic activity of herbosome formulation.Ruthvika Joshi Ankit P.Laddha Yogesh A.Kulkarni Sarika Wairkar 2021Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2021,11,9:0
3Mortality from COVID-19 in patients with lung cancer显示文摘The World Health Organization declared coronavirus infectious disease-2019(COVID-19)linked to the severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS-CoV-2),a global pandemic in March 2020.The pandemic outbreak has led to the most unprecedented and catastrophic loss of human life in the recent history. As of January 2021,there were more than 100 million cases of COVID-19 and more than two million deaths worldwide.Compared to the general population, patients with cancer are at a higher risk of poor outcomes from COVID-19.In large cohort studies, mortality from COVID-19 in patients with cancer can be as high as 40%.In addition to clinical variables(older age, male sex,and co-morbidities)that are associated with mortality in general population, cancer patients are uniquely vulnerable to severe COVID-19 due to immunosuppression from cancer and its therapy, and disruption of routine clinical care.Among patients with cancer, the lung cancer population is at a higher risk of poor outcomes and mortality from COVID-19 for several reasons. For instance, lung is the main target organ in COVID-19 that can lead to respiratory failure, patients with lung cancer have baseline poor lung function from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and smoking. In addition, some of the lung cancer treatment side-effects like pneumonitis, may obscure the diagnosis of COVID-19.In this article,we systematically review the most impactful cohort studies published to date in patients with cancer and COVID-19.We describe the rates of mortality in patients with cancer and COVID-19 with a special focus on the lung cancer population. We also summarize the factors associated with poor outcomes and mortality in patients with lung cancer and COVID-19.Amit A.Kulkarni Grace Wilson Naomi Fujioka Manish R.Patel 2021Journal of Cancer Metastasis and Treatment2021,7,1:0
4Understanding risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome after Ad26.COV2.S vaccination显示文摘On April 13,2021,the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)and the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA)recommended a pause in administration of the Ad26.COV2.S(Johnson&Johnson[Janssen])coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)vaccine for all persons[1].At that time, approximately 6.8 million doses of vaccine had been administered around the United States. The pause was prompted by 6 cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis(CVST)in combination with thrombocytopenia,a condition whose nomenclature is in flux but which we will refer to as thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome(TTS),as used by CDC in describing the condition[2].All patients were women younger than 50 years.Of note,2 of 6 patients also had splanchnic and portal vein thrombosis.Prathit A.Kulkarni Vinay Prasad 2021Frontiers of Medicine2021,15,6:0
5Settling and spreading behaviour of particle clusters in quiescent liquids in confined vessels显示文摘Here we report experiments on particle cluster settling at high Reynolds number in quiescent liquid contained in a vessel. The particles were observed to spread at the vessel bottom surface in a near-circular annular shape after settling irrespective of the shape of the vessel cross-section and particle shape, size, and types.Effect of different parameters such as mass, type and aspect ratio of the particles, height, and viscosity of liquid was investigated on spreading behaviour.Formation of the hemispherical bottom cap of the cluster that bounces upon hitting the vessel bottom surface was found to be responsible for the final circular annular shape of the settled structure.Particle leakage from the cluster was seen in the form of a tail.In the liquid having viscosity beyond 100 cP,cluster breakage was observed that resulted in hindered settling and asymmetric shapes of finally settled particles. The observations are useful to understand the overall area over which settling and spreading of such clusters can be observed.Sayan Pal Amol A.Kulkarni 2023Particuology2023,,12:0
