1Blockade of cholecystokinin-2 receptor and cyclooxygenase-2 synergistically induces cell apoptosis, and inhibits the proliferation of human gastric cancer cells in vitro显示文摘Gastrin and cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) playimportant roles in the carcinogenesis and progression ofgastric cancer.However,it remains unknown whether the combination of cholecystokinin-2(CCK-2) receptor antagonist plus COX-2 inhibitor exerts synergistic anti-tumor effects on human gastric cancer.Here,we demonstrated that the combination of AG-041R(a CCK-2 receptor antagonist) plus NS-398(a selective COX-2 inhibitor) treatment had synergistic effects on proliferation inhibition,apoptosis induction,down-regulation of Bcl-2 and up-regulation of Bax expression in MKN-45 cells.These results indicate that simultaneous targeting of CCK-2 receptor and COX-2 may inhibit gastric cancer development more effectively than targeting either molecule alone.(C)2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.All rights reserved.Sun, W. 3THE INFLUENCE OF CAVITY DAMAGE ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SUPERPLASTICALLY-DEFORMED MATERIALS AND ITS PREDICTION显示文摘Aluminium alloy LY12CZ sheet without any pre-treatment has been used to study the influence of cavity damage on the mechanical properties of the superplastically-deformed materials room temper- ature. The experimental results show that: (1) the lower the rate of cavitation as the superplastic strain increases, the higher the superplasticity is; (2) the mechanical properties of superplastically- deformed materials at room temperature decrease as the superplastically-deformed strain increases, especially, a noteworthy decrease in elasticity modulus, yield strenth and ultimate strength at room temperature begins to appear as the level of cavitation by area comes up to about 4%, while at the same level the reduction in area drops down a very large quantity. Then, a three-layer back- propagation neural network has been developed to predict the machanichl properties of the superplasti- cally-deformed material.The results acquired from the neural network are veryM. 5Scale Effect of Climate and Soil Texture on Soil Organic Carbon in the Uplands of Northeast China显示文摘Understanding how spatial scale inffuences commonly-observed effiects of climate and soil texture on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage is important for accurately estimating the SOC pool at different scales. The relationships among climate factors, soil texture and SOC density at the regional, provincial, city, and county scales were evaluated at both the soil surface (0-20 cm) and throughout the soil profile (0-100 cm) in the Northeast China uplands. We examined 1022 profiles obtained from the Second National Soil Survey of China. The results indicated that the relationships between climate factors and SOC density generally weakened with decreasing spatial scale. The provincial scale was optimal to assess the relationship between climate factors and SOC density because regional differences among provinces were covered up at the regional scale. However, the relationship between soil texture and SOC density had no obvious trend with increasing scale and changed with temperature. There were great differences in the impacts of climate factors and soil texture on SOC density at different scales. Climate factors had a larger effect on SOC density than soil texture at the regional scale. Similar trends were seen in Heilongjiang and eastern Inner Mongolia at the provincial scale. But, soil texture had a greater effect on SOC density compared with climate factors in Jilin and Liaoning. 8Regional Simulation of Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics for Dry Farmland in East China by Coupling a 1:500000 Soil Database with the Century Model显示文摘Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) in agricultural soils influence soil quality and greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Dry farmland covers more than 70% of the whole cropland area in China and plays an important role in mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In this study, 4109 dry farmland soil polygons were extracted using spatial overlay analysis of the soil layer (1:500000) and the land use layer (1:500000) to support Century model simulations of SOC dynamics for dry farmland in Anhui Province, East China from 1980 to 2008. Considering two field-validation sites, the Century model performed relatively well in modeling SOC dynamics for dry farmland in the province. The simulated results showed that the area-weighted mean soil organic carbon density (SOCD) of dry farmland increased from 18.77 Mg C ha1 in 1980 to 23.99 Mg C ha1 in 2008 with an average sequestration rate of 0.18 Mg C ha1 year?1. Approximately 94.9% of the total dry farmland area sequestered carbon while 5.1% had carbon lost. Over the past 29 years, the net SOC gain in dry farmland soils of the province was 19.37 Tg, with an average sequestration rate of 0.67 Tg C year1. Augmentation of SOC was primarily due to increased consumption of nitrogen fertilizer and farmyard manure. Moreover, SOC dynamics were highly differentiated among dry farmland soil groups. 9Modeling Carbon Dynamics in Paddy Soils in Jiangsu Province of China with Soil Databases Differing in Spatial Resolution显示文摘A number of process-based models have been developed for quantifying carbon(C)sequestration in agro-ecosystems.The DeNitrification-DeComposition(DNDC)model was used to simulate and quantify long-term(1980-2008)soil organic carbon(SOC)dynamics in the important rice-producing province,Jiangsu,China.Changes in SOC storages were estimated from two soil databases differing in spatial resolution:a county database consisting of 68 polygons and a soil patch-based database of 701 polygons for all 3.7 Mha of rice fields in Jiangsu.The simulated SOC storage with the coarse resolution county database ranged between 131.0-320.6 Tg C in 1980 and 170.3-305.1 Tg C in 2008,respectively,while that estimated with the fine resolution database was 201.6 and 216.2 Tg C in 1980 and 2008,respectively.The results modeled with the soil databases differing in spatial resolution indicated that using the soil input data with higher resolution substantially increased the accuracy of the modeled results;and when lacking detailed soil datasets,the DNDC model,parameterized with the most sensitive factor(MSF) method to cope with attribute uncertainty,could still produce acceptable results although with deviations of up to 60% for the case study reported in this paper.XU Sheng-Xiang SHI Xue-Zheng ZHAO Yong-Cun YU Dong-Sheng WANG Shi-Hang ZHANG Li-Ming C. 12Primary Hyperparathyroidism:A Tale of Two Cities Revisited-New York and Shanghai显示文摘In the 1970s,with the advent of biochemical multichannel screening in the United States and other western countries,the clinical presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism(PHPT) changed from a symptomatic to an asymptomatic disorder.However,in Asian countries,like China,PHPT did not show this evolution,but rather continued to be a symptomatic disease with target organ involvement.In this paper,we revisit the clinical features of PHPT in New York and Shanghai,representative United States and Chinese cites,over the past decade.The questions we address are whether the disease evolved in China to a more asymptomatic one and,whether in the United States further changes are evident.The results indicate that while PHPT con-tinues to present primarily as an asymptomatic disease in the United States,a new phenotype characterized by normal serum calcium and high parathyroid hormone levels,normocalcemic PHPT,has emerged.Data from Shanghai demonstrates a trend for PHPT to present more commonly as an asymptomatic disorder in China.However,most patients with PHPT in China still manifest classical symptoms,i.e.nephrolithiasis and fractures.A comparison of the two cohorts shows that Chinese patients with PHPT are younger,with higher serum calcium and PTH levels,and lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels than patients in New York.Normocalcemic PHPT has not yet been recognized in Shanghai.In summary,although the phenotypes of PHPT in both cities are evolving towards less evident disease,sharp clinical and biochemical differences are still apparent in PHPT as expressed in China and the United States.Jian-min Liu Natalie E. 13The role and clinical implications of microRNAs in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is common and one of the most aggressive of all human cancers. Recent studies have indicated that miRNAs, a class of small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally, directly contribute to HCC by targeting many critical regulatory genes. Several miRNAs are involved in hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus replication and virus-induced changes, whereas others participate in multiple intracellular signaling pathways that modulate apoptosis, cell cycle checkpoints, and growth-factor-stimulated responses. When disturbed, these pathways appear to result in malignant transformation and ultimately HCC development. Recently, miRNAs circulating in the blood have acted as possible early diagnostic markers for HCC. These miRNA also could serve as indicators with respect to drug efficacy and be prognostic in HCC patients. Such biomarkers would assist stratification of HCC patients and help direct personalized therapy. Here, we summarize recent advances regarding the role of miRNAs in HCC development and progression. 15Roles of HIV-1 auxiliary proteins in viral pathogenesis and host-pathogen interactions显示文摘Active host-pathogen interactions take place during infection of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Outcomes of these interactions determine the efficiency of viral infection and subsequent disease progression. HIV- infected cells respond to viral invasion with various defensive strategies such as innate, cellular and humoral immune antiviral mechanisms. On the other hand, the virus has also developed various offensive tactics to suppress these host cellular responses. Among many of the viral offensive strategies, HIV-1 viral auxiliary proteins (Tat, Rev, Nef, Vif, Vpr and Vpu) play important roles in the host-pathogen interaction and thus have significant impacts on the outcome of HIV infection. One of the best examples is the interaction of Vif with a host cytidine deaminase APOBEC3G. Although specific roles of other auxiliary proteins are not as well described as Vif-APOBEC3G interaction, it is the goal of this brief review to summarize some of the preliminary findings with the hope to stimulate further discussion and investiga- tion in this exhilarating area of research.Lin LI Hai Shan LI C. 19Green-Naghdi Theory,Part A:Green-Naghdi(GN) Equations for Shallow Water Waves显示文摘In this work,Green-Naghdi (GN) equations with general weight functions were derived in a simple way. A wave-absorbing beach was also considered in the general GN equations. A numerical solution for a level higher than 4 was not feasible in the past with the original GN equations. The GN equations for shallow water waves were simplified here, which make the application of high level (higher than 4) equations feasible. The linear dispersion relationships of the first seven levels were presented. The accuracy of dispersion relationships increased as the level increased. Level 7 GN equations are capable of simulating waves out to wave number times depth . Numerical simulation of nonlinear water waves was performed by use of Level 5 and 7 GN equations, which will be presented in the next paper.William C.
