| 1 | Advances in the early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the most prevalent cancers globally.In contrast to the declining death rates observed for all other common cancers such as breast,lung,and prostate cancers,the death rates for HCC continue to increase by^2e3%per year because HCC is frequently diagnosed late and there is no curative therapy for an advanced HCC.The early diagnosis of HCC is truly a big challenge.Over the past years,the early diagnosis of HCC has relied on surveillance with ultrasonography(US)and serological assessments of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP).However,the specificity and sensitivity of US/AFP is not satisfactory enough to detect early onset HCC.Recent technological advancements offer hope for early HCC diagnosis.Herein,we review the progress made in HCC diagnostics,with a focus on emerging imaging techniques and biomarkers for early disease diagnosis. | Weiyi Wang Chao Wei | 2020 | Genes & Diseases2020,7,3: | 42 |

| 6 | Preparation and characterization of capric-palmitic-stearic acid ternary eutectic mixture/expanded vermiculite composites as form-stabilized thermal energy storage materials显示文摘In this study, a composite of form-stable phase change materials(FSPCMs) were prepared by the incorporation of a eutectic mixture of capric–palmitic–stearic acid(CA–PA–SA) into expanded vermiculite(EV)via vacuum impregnation. In the composites, CA–PA–SA was utilized as a thermal energy storage material,and EV served as the supporting material. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated that CA–PA–SA and EV in the composites only undergo physical combination, not a chemical reaction. Scanning electron microscopy images indicated that CA–PA–SA is sufficiently absorbed in the expanded vermiculite porous network. According to differential scanning calorimetry results, the70 wt% CA–PA–SA/EV sample melts at 19.3℃ with a latent heat of 117.6 J/g and solidifies at 17.1℃ with a latent heat of 118.3 J/g. Thermal cycling measurements indicated that FSPCMs exhibit adequate stability even after being subjected to 200 melting–freezing cycles. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of the composites increased by approximately 49.58% with the addition of 5 wt% of Cu powder. | 11 | Synergistic antibacterial activity of physical-chemical multi-mechanism by TiO2 nanorod arrays for safe biofilm eradication on implant显示文摘Treatment of implant-associated infection is becoming more challenging,especially when bacterial biofilms form on the surface of the implants.Developing multi-mechanism antibacterial methods to combat bacterial biofilm infections by the synergistic effects are superior to those based on single modality due to avoiding the adverse effects arising from the latter.In this work,TiO2 nanorod arrays in combination with irradiation with 808 nearinfrared(NIR)light are proven to eradicate single specie biofilms by combining photothermal therapy,photodynamic therapy,and physical killing of bacteria.The TiO2 nanorod arrays possess efficient photothermal conversion ability and produce a small amount of reactive oxygen species(ROS).Physiologically,the combined actions of hyperthermia,ROS,and puncturing by nanorods give rise to excellent antibacterial properties on titanium requiring irradiation for only 15 min as demonstrated by our experiments conducted in vitro and in vivo.More importantly,bone biofilm infection is successfully treated efficiently by the synergistic antibacterial effects and at the same time,the TiO2 nanorod arrays improve the new bone formation around implants.In this protocol,besides the biocompatible TiO2 nanorod arrays,an extra photosensitizer is not needed and no other ions would be released.Our findings reveal a rapid bacteria-killing method based on the multiple synergetic antibacterial modalities with high biosafety that can be implemented in vivo and obviate the need for a second operation.The concept and antibacterial system described here have large clinical potential in orthopedic and dental applications. | Xiangyu Zhang Guannan Zhang Maozhou Chai Xiaohong Yao Weiyi Chen Paul KChu | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,1: | 7 |

| 13 | Reduction and characterization of bioaerosols in a wastewater treatment station via ventilation显示文摘Bioaerosols from wastewater treatment processes are a significant subgroup of atmospheric aerosols. In the present study,airborne microorganisms generated from a wastewater treatment station(WWTS) that uses an oxidation ditch process were diminished by ventilation.Conventional sampling and detection methods combined with cloning/sequencing techniques were applied to determine the groups,concentrations,size distributions,and species diversity of airborne microorganisms before and after ventilation. There were 3021 ± 537 CFU/m3 of airborne bacteria and 926 ± 132 CFU/m3 of airborne fungi present in the WWTS bioaerosol.Results showed that the ventilation reduced airborne microorganisms significantly compared to the air in the WWTS. Over 60% of airborne bacteria and airborne fungi could be reduced after4 hr of air exchange. The highest removal(92.1% for airborne bacteria and 89.1% for fungi) was achieved for 0.65–1.1 μm sized particles. The bioaerosol particles over 4.7 μm were also reduced effectively. Large particles tended to be lost by gravitational settling and small particles were generally carried away,which led to the relatively easy reduction of bioaerosol particles0.65–1.1 μm and over 4.7 μm in size. A lab-scale anaerobic baffled reactor with three compartments was employed to simulate this process. The reactor was operated in a TC-absence wastewater and 250 μg/L TC-presence wastewater for three months after a start-up period,respectively. The responses of p H, oxidation–reduction potential(ORP), chemical oxygen demand(COD), total phosphorus(TP), enzymes activity(dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase),and microbial community were investigated to reveal the effect of TC on PH_3 production.Results suggested that the dehydrogenase(DH) activity, acid phosphatase(ACP) activity and COD have positive relationship with PH_3 production, while p H, ORP level and the TP in liquid phase have negative relationship with PH_3 production. Identification of novel, important oncogenic factors in osteosarcoma and development of better, effective therapeutic approaches are in urgent need for better treatment of osteosarcoma patients. In this study, we uncovered that the oncogene MYC is significantly upregulated in metastastic osteosarcoma samples. In addition, high MYC expression is associated with poor survival of osteosarcoma patients. Analysis of MYC targets in osteosarcoma revealed that most of the osteosarcoma super enhancer genes are bound by MYC. Treatment of osteosarcoma cells with super enhancer inhibitors THZ1 and JQ1 effectively suppresses the proliferation, migration, and invasion of osteosarcoma cells. Mechanistically,THZ1 treatment suppresses a large group of super enhancer containing MYC target genes including CDK6 and TGFB2.
