1Epigenetic regulation: methylation of histone and non-histone proteins显示文摘Histone methylation is believed to play important roles in epigenetic memory in various biological processes. However, questions like whether the methylation marks themselves are faithfully transmit- ted into daughter cells and through what mechanisms are currently under active investigation. Previ- ously, methylation was considered to be irreversible, but the recent discovery of histone lysine de- methylases revealed a dynamic nature of histone methylation regulation on four of the main sites of methylation on histone H3 and H4 tails (H3K4, H3K9, H3K27 and H3K36). Even so, it is still unclear whether demethylases specific for the remaining two sites, H3K79 and H4K20, exist. Furthermore, be- sides histone proteins, the lysine methylation and demethylation also occur on non-histone proteins, which are probably subjected to similar regulation as histones. 3EPIGENETIC NATURE OF RADIATION CARCINOGENESIS AT LOW DOSES显示文摘The present paradigm of radiation-induced carcinogenesis has been based on somatic mutation theory initiating a mutation in somatic cells derived from DNA damage by ionizing radiation. A non-threshold linear model has been assumed from high doses to low doses. As an alternative to this, we are proposing a new model that epigenetic changes induced by low dose irradiation may be a first step of carcinogenesis. 4Factors influencing the yield of mesenteric angiography in lower gastrointestinal bleed显示文摘AIM: To assess if certain triaging rules could be established to optimize the yield of mesenteric angiography. METHODS: Medical records of 101 patients were retrospectively reviewed and parameters relating to age, gender, pulse rate, blood pressure, serum hemoglobin, intensive care unit(ICU) admission, and the number of packed red blood cells(PRBC) transfused in the 12 and 24 h prior to the angiography were tabulated in two groups with positive and negative angiography results. RESULTS: We found no correlation between gender, pulse rate, blood pressure or serum hemoglobin and positivity of the mesenteric angiogram. But patients with positive angiogram were found to be on average 7 years older(73.2 years vs 65.9 years old)(P = 0.02). Angiogram was positive in 39.3 %(11/28) of patientsadmitted in ICU vs 23.2%(17/73) who were admitted elsewhere in the hospital(P = 0.03). In the 12 and 24 h prior to angiography, patients with a positive angiogram received a mean of 2.7 ± 2.3 and 3.3 ± 2.6 units of PRBC s respectively, while patients with a negative angiogram had a mean of 1.6 ± 1.9(P = 0.02) and 2.1 ± 2.6 units(P = 0.04) received respectively in the same period.
